Artificial flowers in gardens

There are so many artificial flowers, palm trees, rose bushes etc in shops nowadays ie the range, b&m, dunhelm mill etc that I wonder how many people are putting them in their garden. With the rise in outdoor furniture being sold im sure having some colourful blooms around adds to the pleasure of ding al fresco. I must admit I do have a few artifical green plants in tubs at my patio. Do others think it is a good idea or not?

It would save on the water bill if we have another hot summer!

years ago artificial flowers were awful. I think though now they have lovely ones. if chosen carefully they could pass for real ones. A lot of people do not have time or other reasons for gardening

I've remembered a lady who didn't like to waste the free plastic flowers that were given out with detergent in the sixties .
I think that they were daffodils and not very subtle.. She planted them out in her garden.
They were there all year round and were bleached white by the sun.

😊 thank you for your graciousness.

Nannynoodles Wed 06-May-26 07:13:23

Oh Whitewavemark2 no offence taken!
I agree they look blooming awful when they go turquoise but where I’ve got mine it won’t see any sun so hoping it stays looking good, if not I’m afraid it will be on a trip to the dump - sorry environmentalists but I’m usually very good 😁.

So depressing to see the use of plastic when the real things are so beautiful
(MissAdventure no disrespect you ve been really ill and can’t keep a garden going so this isn’t a pop at you or anyone else who can’t)
But the use of more and more plastic is horrid and so bad for the environment These plastic door wreaths that are popping up everywhere are awful too, bad enough at Christmas now all the year round

I love my small garden and love flowers but saying that, I still think it’s okay to pop in a few artificial flower stems in between my other plants. It brightens things up - especially when the real flowers have died off. I try to make sure though that they are realistic and not cheap tatty plastic blooms.

They might look alright initially but strong light and weather does fade them making them look tacky.
There’s a house near me with a couple of hanging ‘box hedge’ plastic balls……..faded, grubby and dreadful!

vegansrock Wed 06-May-26 05:57:16

Terrible for the environment, tacky and cheap. Plastic grass should be banned too.

JamesandJon33 Wed 06-May-26 03:14:25

That’s the thing with plastic, it fades and then looks tacky. And hard to dispose of too.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 06-May-26 01:13:08

Oh nannynoodles I didn’t mean to be rude, I posted before I saw your post.

I must say when the bays were first put in place they looked very good. But too much sun has faded them.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 06-May-26 01:09:25

There is a house not far away with two bay standards, each side of the front door.

They have now faded to a rather fetching turquoise😄😄😄.

Nannynoodles Tue 05-May-26 22:35:56

I paid quite a lot for an artificial bay tree to go in a very shady corner by my front door where everything I’ve planted has died, and I must say I’m delighted with it.
It looks very realistic at the moment and as it won’t see the sun I hope it stays that way!

Casdon Tue 05-May-26 21:43:48

Not for me, I prefer to watch plants change with the seasons.

SueDonim Tue 05-May-26 20:49:28

Perhaps your neighbours could have artificial cats, Esmay! grin

crazyH Tue 05-May-26 19:38:02

That reminds me , I must get my artificial hanging basket !

JamesandJon33 Tue 05-May-26 19:34:27

Next door has an artificial flower door wreath. Two artificial laurel bushes each side of the front door, plus four hanging baskets filled with plastic flowers. They are colourful, definitely artificial and very bad taste. Heaps of plastic,.

Esmay Tue 05-May-26 19:04:55

Not a fan of fake flowers in the garden
But -
my neighbour's four cats have made holes in the trellis and I bought some very cheap squares of fake foliage to cover up the gaps.

M0nica Tue 05-May-26 19:02:02

No,no,no. Never!

Tenko Tue 05-May-26 18:59:57

I’m not a fan of fake flowers or grass . I like watching things grow and attracting bees and butterflies and I love the smell of cut grass .

PamelaJ1 Tue 05-May-26 18:44:27

What I really really hate is the artificial flowers left on the compost heap in the churchyard.
If God had managed to find a way of composting the non biodegradable he’d have done a wonderful thing!

SueDonim Tue 05-May-26 16:52:50

Do the slugs leave artificial flowers alone? If so, I could be tempted…

I liked the idea of outdoor rugs (sorry) but was put off them when a friend got one. She moved it later on in the summer and it was heaving with earwigs! 😱😱😱

I cant tell the difference[I am not a gardener!].

I once "resuced" some plants, as I thought a lady's young child was "drowning" them.

Was later told they were fake flowers!

Witzend Tue 05-May-26 16:43:49

Whitewavemark2

The Japanese say that the gaps are more important than the plants.

Well, they’re welcome to their opinion. I would beg to differ!

Gran22boys Tue 05-May-26 16:40:19

Hideous.
