It’s 15 years ago today that Gransnet went ‘live’.

Well, it’s lovely that so many GN posters are celebrating the 15th birthday of GN, with special reminiscences, but where are the voices of those that started Gransnet? ( ie GNHQ).
A word from them would have been nice, wouldn’t it?

Bit late posting this. So missed the birthday celebrations. Apologies

Been on Gransnet less than a year but now read it and usually post something every day. Look forward to receiving my lunch time email

People may have noticed my posts are erratic at all hours of the day and night. Due to painkiller medication timing and sleep needed for chronic joint pain.

Also difficult to type from my mobile . So l leave space between paragraphs. Also l am recovering from a broken wrist at the moment which is very painful.

I really am becoming fond of Gransnet and the people who post on it.

Always lots of different important ,current topical subjects and other matters are discussed.

Some stuff isn't my cup of tea. And opinions vary widely
But there is a wealth of stuff l can really relate to

People are knowledgeable, don't talk rubbish and are usually very kind and helpful. And well mannered.

Their opinions may sometimes be very diverse.

But their advice and experience is send to none. Invaluable.

As explained, my mobility and medical problems are quite restricting . So, it is often difficult to get out.

Have lived by myself for many years and have no close family. My friends are now dying off or have health problems So it is good to be in touch with good people and the outside world.

Feels like touching base on a daily basis

Thank You.

Happy Birthday Gransnet

I joined at the beginning of Covid 19 pandemic and am so glad I did.

henetha Thu 07-May-26 12:28:35

I wish I could remember when I joined. But I seem to have been on here for ever. And every visit to GN has been a pleasure. So thank you, and very happy birthday wishes to everyone involved.

Happy birthday Gransnetters. Can’t remember for the life of me how many years ago I found you all. I’m not one for poking my head above the waterline and generally only occasionally post a comment but you’ve kept me laughing, weeping, informed me and kept me envious through everything life is throwing at me and you. Thank you all x. flowers

Happy Birthday Gransnet 🎂 🎂.

I joined and became active last summer- by recommedation- I had no idea it has been going for so many years.

I joined in the first week as NanaChrissy, I think kittylester is probably the only poster who remembers me. I’m now only a lurker and I had to change my name, as a new member called NanaChrissie refused to change, despite causing much confusion. She then disappeared!
I am fb friends with a few Netters and I am lucky enough to have met up with Bellasnana a couple of times.
We definitely used to have a lot more fun in the first few years though.

I meant to say hello Marmight, nice to ‘see’ you. 👋

harrigran Thu 07-May-26 00:32:36

I have been here from the beginning.
I have had wonderful support during some difficult times.

I joined about a year before I took early retirement in 2014. I knew I would miss the daily office chat, and GN bridged that gap; here were people I could interact with and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the different characters. I don't post very often, but enjoy reading the posts on a daily basis.

Happy Birthday Gransnet. 🥂 My eldest DGD who is now 15 was born at the end of March and I joined within a very short time of GN starting. It had one or two members who decided not to join in in the friendliness using unnecessary language and taking the fun out of it. And on occasion being abusive towards other posters. Thankfully they were brought into line quickly and left or were barred. GN has made me realise what a kind and caring bunch Grans and Grandads generally are. Here’s to the next 15 years.

I can't remember when I joined, probably about three years ago. It has been so helpful. So many problems shared. It also makes me count my blessings when I see the health difficulties that afflict some people.

HiMay Wed 06-May-26 14:52:58

I’ve only been on for a few years. I love it, and recommend it to many others. There’s always something interesting, and often helpful, to read. I have had many laughs, too. Thank you all!

grandMattie Wed 06-May-26 14:07:13

Golly! Have I been on it that long?

Magenta8

A few years ago I had a peep and posted a few comments which drew a lot of put downs, wrong footing and deliberate misinterpretation of what I posted. There was one particularly vituperative poster who everyone seem to love. I decided GN was not for me and left it for a year or so.

When I tried again it seemed that generally the posters were kinder to each other. There are still spats and arguments but the routine put downs etc from established GNs seem to have gone.

Anyway Happy Birthday Gransnet.

You have improved so many people's lives in so many ways. Whether it is just a tasty recipe, useful information, a shared interest or problem, a debating platform or people to talk things over with and vent your feelings to and more.

Love to all.thanks

Exactly the same happened to me Magenta8.

I remember contributing to a thread about falling out with a best friend which I had recently had happen to me.
Wow! The nasty vindictive replies I received. I voiced my concern and one of the perpetrators sent me a private message, apologising.
I left GN for a while after that but obv have returned, a lot tougher.

Anyway
Happy Birthday Gransnet 🎂

Wow!

All our best wishes and Happy Anniversary.

Happy birthday Gransnet! I joined in 2014 but ‘lurked’ for quite a while. It’s been a great source of information and support, has often made me laugh and sometimes made me cross.

Mamie Wed 06-May-26 11:50:32

I joined at the beginning. I had a reasonably amicable relationship with Greatnan because we were both in France and I had encountered her on other forums. I think the joining together to support the search for her was one of Gransnet's best moments. The pantomome was fun and some of my dancing girls are still here. 😂
It may be nostalgia, but I think the discussions generally used to have more depth. Not so many brief, provocatively negative posts back then, in my opinion.

argymargy Wed 06-May-26 07:43:48

I’ve only been here 5 years (since becoming a Gran) but it seems like less. As we know, time speeds up as you go. Definitely like it better here than where I came from (Mumsnet) but I still go back to remind myself how much nicer it is here. 😁

Remembering some of the names that have popped up who are no longer with us, Ana, who originally posted under the name of Anagram, I was very sorry to hear she'd died. Phoenix of course, Jing a bit Marmite, but she could be dead funny, I think she recognised she went too far at times. Greatnan's sad death hit the headlines, she was on the cusp of going to live in NZ and had a whole new future planned before that accident which hit the newspapers. There was a nice lady, one of the older posters, PRINTMISS I remember and not so long ago we collectively had a thread where we celebrated the 100th birthday of Bijou, I think a first on GN. I don't think she's around anymore.

Happy Birthday Gransnet! Time certainly passes. I found the site very useful in lockdown as well. It is like an old friend whom you can turn to for brightening your day and good advice. Long may it continue.

kittylester Wed 06-May-26 06:39:17

The parties were huge fun! There were sometimes broomsticks involved as I recall.
