It’s 15 years ago today that Gransnet went ‘live’.

Does anyone remember the first GN party? It was held at Glastonbury.

Happy birthday 🎂 Gransnet!

I think I joined around 5 years ago. Lots of friendly people and it’s good to support one another in difficult times.

Happy birthday, Gransnet. I joined in about 2018, I think. I had been googling “magazines for the older woman” and it came up with a link to a thread in GN about it. I was so taken with the conversations that I investigated further threads and then joined. I very rarely posted for the first few years and was invariably slapped down for anything I said, which made me even more reticent! Eventually though I just thought “Why not? If it’s something I can usefully contribute to, then I should just go for it”, so now I do. I love the kindness and support and all the varied threads, some funny, some serious. Lots of useful info as well. Long may it continue in its present form.

Happy Birthday Gransnet. I have been a reader/contributor for at least ten years.

Happy birthday GN. I became addicted a few years ago and now GNetters are my only friends - got me through some very difficult times.

Happy birthday Smileless !

I've had some real laughs on gransnet, and a huge amount of support at times, from people i may not have expected it from.

Shot down in flames, yes, for quite a while when I first joined, 2017ush, but its ok - i forgive them. wink

I still think of Ana from time to time 😥

It’s interesting how many of us got squashed in our first few posts!! I got a lovely greeting and then it was down hill till I regained my courage

Isn't it, I wonder if it was the same poster, but anyway I best not go down that route!

After my 'slapping down' I stayed quiet for a while until Anniebach asked a question that I knew I could answer...she sent me the sweetest pm to thank me which was so kind and thoughtful and I thought oh okay I will post again then

I joined 2013 so not too long after it started I didn’t realise it was so young when I started
Petra I too was ‘attacked’ by Jingles in my first weeks, nearly left, but I didn’t sign off completely but went into a shell and stayed quiet for a while, I found her extremely scary and didn’t see the fun side of her, that others did.

I always thought I was a ‘baby boomer: but I m assured thats if you are born in 1946 and I was born 1945 so what am I ? My dad had leave then was sent out to Burma so wasn’t back till I was a ‘big baby’ I think over one year old and apparently I screamed when I met him

Graphite Thank you for posting the links to early GN threads. They are very interesting

Looking at the 6 March 2011 thread about the pregnant daughter with the cheating husband, I was rather taken with the suggestion made by DrSeuss. I can't help wondering how it all turned out.

Happy Birthday Gransnet.
I can’t remember when I joined, I lurked for some time but the arguments before Brexit were too much, so had my say.
I have changed my username once.

Men were often away, returned from WW2 and hey presto!

The same thing happened after WW1. Couples were encouraged to increase their families to compensate for the fact that so many husbands were killed in action.

My grandmother, who had three children, used to say, ‘One for mother, one for father and one for the British Empire!’

I'm curious. There's a post from GeraldineS date 7 May 2011 where she writes:

I am 63 in September, and was a bulge baby - just missed the war!

Was what is now called the post war "baby boom" called the "baby bulge" or was that just her own term for it?

The post-war baby bulge or baby boom.

Men were often away, returned from WW2 and hey presto!

Happy birthday to Smileless2012 snd to Gransnet.
I think I joined in 2014 or 2015 and my first comment was almost my last because it drew flak from some who seemed unable to cope with an opinion that wasn't mainstream except by name-calling. It was a while before I put fingers to keyboard again.

But so many times the site demonstrates the kindness of strangers in action and I am glad to be a tiny link in a worldwide chain of friendship. May GN go from strength to strength.

Geraldine has posted in one of the threads linked by Graphite.

Those were the days.

Thanks graphite - thanks interesting

Happy Birthday, Gransnet. I joined a year after the beginning and was quickly made aware of the bunfights, mostly between jingl and the mercurial GreatNan. I also remember Ana who had a wonderful sense of humour.
HQ was a lot more approachable and would often join in some of the discussions. I thought it was a sad day when some of them left and were replaced by hard liners who just didn’t ‘get’ some of the humour - hence jingl’s banishments and often hilarious reincarnations.
The search for GreatNan showed how close knit and valuable an online community can become.
Together we mourn our sad losses and support those enduring the hardest of times..

Long Live Gransnet and all who sail in her. 😂

Is anyone any good at searching stuff?

I wonder if it is possible to find the first post/thread?

I dont know about the first as you need to search on keyword as well as date.

Companies House shows the company was incorporated on 19 April 2011.

I found a thread called How old are you? Where the first post is dated 15 April 2011 so it isn’t GN’s birthday today unless there was a official launch day.

People were moaning about the old fashioned logo.

Just found another from 7 April 2011
