'Old Lady shops'

I made myself laugh today as I saw something I liked in a leaflet for what I used to term 'An old lady shop' ! It kind of put me off, although I have sent for the clothing to try.
It got me thinking, even though we are older now, are there still shops you feel you might be too young to buy from? I aim this at all ages too, as we are all only a certain age in our own heads.
I can remember as a young girl wearing Marks and Spencer stuff that My Mum had bought and vowing 'When I'm grown up I shall NEVER shop at Marks and Spencer.' (I did !!)
So, anyone else??

Theres one nearish to here, with beautiful tropical fish tanks, and a marvellous tearoom with lace tablecloths, hand written menus, and china pots of tea.

Id love to go there again.

I am available 👍

Actually, I've been buying some very pretty lacy underwear sets from Damart for some time now, probably since before I was 60! Apart from that, I don't know what they sell, the name puts me off. At the risk of being controversial, Seasalt has become a favourite for the older person...I saw a dress I really.liked last year but didn't buy it. I was highly thankful as I saw it on many ladies through the summer, all of whom would most certainly have been collecting their pension for some time! Like everyone, I also see Chums, EWM , Cotton Traders etc as being for " old people".
I know the gents outfitters in High Street , Shrewsbury you mention Aldom. It actually has some extremely smart menswear in it, DS buys his "best clothes" in there, & they're great for pyjamas, hankies, wallets etc.

I bought a lovely denim skirt from Damart last year!!

I buy from numerous different shops and certainly don’t stick my nose up at the cheaper shops. When it comes to Seasalt, I’ve only purchased one full price item which was a dress for my son’s wedding. The rest of the time I buy during the sales. As a lot of other posters have said, buy what you like and makes you feel confident wearing.
Often I’ll find my DD will have been out clothes shopping and will have bought the same as me unbeknown to each other, especially when it comes to M&S. I find most of my friends are similar, half the fun is shopping around.

I meet 3 other GNers in one regularly.

Gosh Danma that is quite extreme. My local garden centre has a play area, and is full of mums, families and social groups as well as gardeners of all ages. My son in his twenties loves it there, they do the best breakfast for miles around.

MissAdventure Tue 05-May-26 13:54:51

Oh, garden centre cafes can be delightful! smile

Danma Tue 05-May-26 13:53:30

Not shopping, but I won’t go to a garden centre cafe. That’s for when I’m a great grandma 🤣

I always find the following bit old ladyish

Chums the large section on incontinence pads and knickers, bibs for you to eat your food etc put me right off. i am not saying I will never need them but please I do not want to see it yet
Hotter but the price puts me off them too
Jaeger I know its a premium brand but so tied in the past

I remember my mum made me a pair of tartan trews in the early sixties for our annual week at the seaside.

I remember my Mum making a white PVC coat. I can still smell it.

I was sctually rummaging atound looking for my half slip the other day.
It was warm out and i had a white skirt on, so didn't want my huge knickers on show.

Rocketstop2 Mon 04-May-26 18:36:57

Going back to the very start of my original thread and being afraid to shop at certain names, maybe we should all take heart in that the trendiest boutique in London in the sixties was called...Granny Takes A Trip grin

Silvershadow Mon 04-May-26 18:33:27

Slax….theres a word from the past. My aunts were always talking about “a nice pair of slax” with sweaters! My mum wasn’t into trousers much but all her sisters were.

MissAdventure Mon 04-May-26 18:32:31

Hopefully. grin

Casdon Mon 04-May-26 18:31:05

I do, but not without socks…except with sandals, obviously!

MissAdventure Mon 04-May-26 18:20:08

They all looked very nice and clean cut (if you like that sort of thing)

I went to a wedding where all the young men wore suits with skin tight trousers, brown pointy shoes with no socks, and different pastel shaded tight shirts.

Gosh, was it a Mods throwback wedding, with parkas and trilby hats too, that would be fun!

No, just young men being on trend😉

Leprechauns perhaps, with the tight trousers, pointy shoes and no socks. I bet they will look back at the wedding photos in forty years time and wonder what on earth they were thinking, like I do when I look back at myself in my loons and tank top.

MissAdventure Mon 04-May-26 18:11:57

I think so.
They're a bit before my time, and clam diggers are a bit after my time.

Oreo Mon 04-May-26 17:45:35

Clam diggers? Trews? Both sound familiar…were trews checked or tartan?

Rocketstop2 Mon 04-May-26 17:42:47

Oops sorry, I see others have said ski pants and OP says they were they !!!

No, not slax!!!!

My Mum wore Slax.

She felt very daring.

My very slim Mum used to wear Capri Pants I think they were called, with some elastic that went under the foot? My Dad said she looked like a banana, as they were yellow.

Ski Pants ?
