How do you hang your washing out?

Undies and socks stay on an airer in the conservatory. Clothing on hangers on the line, the lightest on the inside. If (when - we live by the coast) it’s windy most of the creases are blown away. Mr C has a totally different, chaotic, system devoid of hangers. I try not to look.

Trousers from the waist and tops pegged at the bottom. Each item MUST have two pegs the same colour, but the next item on the line must have two pegs in a different colour from its neighbours. Pegs never left on the line. On the rare occasions DH puts the washing out he never follows the rules and I have to wait until he isnt looking to go and change all the pegs around so they are in the 'right' place.

Personally?? PEGS always on the line

I'm a slut too, personally always on.the line and I hang trousers from the legs as how else does the waistband dry? I don't match pegs or clothes - things go on as they come out of the basket. I do pair socks though.

Bottoms from the top, but tops depend on fabric - if it stretches it's hung very carefully from the shoulders with the pegs on the seams. T'Other Half's shirts are hung from the bottom of the side seams.
I don't understand those that peg at the armpits - surely that means you've got four layers of fabric together to try to dry, and also don't you get a line across from being hung over the line?
My washing is grouped, and of course socks are all hung in pairs facing the same way.

I always check which way the wind is blowing and hang so things like shirts billow out. Very technical this washing malarkey!

Oh don't get me started on this one. Tops from the bottom and bottoms from the top but... everything MUST be facing the same way AND... must have matching coloured pegs.

I have a four branch rotary drier and always balance the heavier items on opposite lines to prevent the lines breaking,
I’m obsessed with hanging washing, not only in groups, but in coordinating colours. ie. underwear, socks, etc.
Since I’ve been ill my DH sometimes pegs out, but so haphazardly I have to go out and rearrange to my specifications!! Neither does he peg towels, pillow cases, sheets straight. And I always thought he was the one with OCD (or as he says CDO, as it has to be in alphabetical order!!)

Tops same as you but trousers by the legs as my mum said the wind blows down through the legs and through to the and it waisband is thickest and takes longer to dry...Made sense so I've always done it thaf way.

We can’t hang our washing out for a few weeks yet as we have ongoing building work in the house and garden . We have two hanging wall racks in the back bedroom we put all our washing on coat hangers and hang them up.Dehumidifier on .
When this work is finished we have a new twirly washing line and will hang washing out like many others , shirts from the bottom and trousers from the top .

MollyNew I'm wuth your method. Supposed to allow the wind to blow through the clothing to dry. Sheets I peg top and bottom edges using two lines on the rotary dryer, just like a sail.

Always put pegs in peg bag and bring them in afterwards.

Casdon, I always hang them like you, tops over the line and pegs under the arm to avoid stretching. My pegs go into my peg bag which is attached to a coat hanger so I can slide it along the line as I go.

Everything shaken thoroughly before being pegged out upside down and inside out, ready for ironing later.
Am I a sad sack to find this thread interesting? 🫢

Me too! I heard recently that in some parts of the US clothes lines are forbidden! 😳 That’s why they always seem to tumble dry everything!

I always dry undies in the tumbler or else on a small clothes horse in the house, don't like to hang them outside .

There's a rather wonderful group on Facebook called 'Washing Line Appreciation Society'; hanging from top/bottom, style/colour of pegs, type of washing line ..... all is discussed, with quite a few chuckles along the way!

I hang tops with the pegs under the armpits so they don’t stretch and the peg marks are not visible. Does that make me a washing line freak?

I do exactly the same as you with T-shirts or stretchy things but other shirts I hang from the bottom.

Jumpers either pegged under armpits or on a clothes hanger, trousers from the bottom of the legs so the weight of the body part pulls the creases out of the legs so no ironing required, shirts are pegged out by the collar

Shirts, dresses and tees all go on hangers. Trousers and skirts pegged at the waist. Inside out if it’s very hot and sunny. Each item has to have pegs of the same colour. Fitted sheets have to be shaken vigorously to remove seeds and leaves before taking indoors.

I’ve been married for nearly 50 years and I’ve always, always hung trousers from the legs. It’s never occurred to me to do it any other way, and this is honestly the first time I’ve ever heard of hanging trousers from the waistband! If it’s something like jeans, how does the waistband ever get completely dry?
