If you could choose a country to live in, other than the one where you live now, which country would it be ?
I was thinking New Zealand or maybe Canada but I think Canada is a bit cold in Winter for me so New Zealand would be the one. Bay of Islands, perhaps, because they get the good weather.

Me for Italy too.

South of France, or Italy.

Somewhere where it’s warmer. I’ve lived in Australia and it’s too hot. As for NZ yes it has lovely scenery but so many social problems and the people can be very insular and there is no culture. Definitely Europe for me - probably France, Portugal, Spain or Italy.

New Zealand - Warkworth, north of Auckland to be precise. Nearly emigrated there 20 years ago and still regret not going.

Switzerland. Absolutely stunning, air so clean, food is incredible, skiing on your doorstep ( not for me now, but for visiting family) Education is brilliant. Plus , they don’t get involved with war! And proud of their culture.

Beautiful country but all the Swiss we have met have had a sense of humour bypass.

Italy.

I wouldn’t move anywhere either but that wasn’t the question.

Wyllow3 Thu 16-Apr-26 00:43:02

Nowhere unless the people I love and know moved there too.

Then it would be the Mediterranean. South of France.

On our travels we came across a man and his wife who had set up a coffee plantation from wild growing coffee in Lautoka, Fiji. They lived at the edge of a gorgeous lagoon surrounded by palm trees , very peaceful. If they got sick I suppose they would fly back to Australia for medical care though I didn’t ask - maybe the hospitals are ok there.

I feel like Fallingstar. I too like Scotland and find the people there very nice. But I just couldn't cope with the weather.

I also admire the Scandinavian countries for making quite a good stab at looking after all their people - not just the wealthiest.

Having said that, although many things in the UK frustrate me, I believe I could do a lot worse than live here. I think that if you live in a country you should appreciate what is good about it, as well as what is bad.

Portugal, my most favourite place 😀

Greece and the Peloponnese in particular. But I would have to keep a home here in the South East of England as I love it equally as much.

Ireland or Wales.

Both feel like spiritual homes to me. My mother's family emigrated from Cork to Cardiff and I was born there. I love Wales and really feel at home when I visit, even though I left when I was 12. The Welsh national anthem finishes me off every time.

The Republic of Ireland is beautiful. I have visited Donegal, Dublin and Sligo and would love to see all of the country.

France, and in particular, Paris.
I’m peeved that I wasn’t born in Paris!

Italy for its wonderful culture, music and lifestyle. And such lovely people.

midgey Wed 15-Apr-26 17:30:08

No question…it would be Wales!

I want to live somewhere where the people are friendly, where I know I will be looked after as I age, where I have access to wonderful scenery, beautiful seaside places and cities where I can go to the theatre and cinemas and where I can meet friends for meals.
That's where I am already! Aren't I lucky?

DamaskRose Wed 15-Apr-26 17:06:40

Orkney. Some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met, beautiful scenery and archeology, empty roads. And, not being a lover of hot weather, the perfect climate!

Mojack26 Wed 15-Apr-26 16:51:55

Australia or Canada. Lived in US 40 years ago and I love the US but with the current administration.....not a chance!

Greyduster Wed 15-Apr-26 16:01:35

It would have to be the West of Ireland for me, even though I know how much it rains there. The people are wonderful and the pace of life just right. We’ve spent time in Cork and Kerry, which are wonderful, but I have a cousin who lives in Donegal and it looks idyllic.

Oreo

New Zealand without a doubt and I wish our whole family had gone there many years ago when we had the chance.

Me too Oreo, New Zealand is so beautiful and the people are lovely. Second choice, Ireland, though it's very different these days with many problems similar to the UK.

Back to my roots in Guernsey. I didn't know when I was well off!!!

Yes, so many nice places to live, but a lot to consider for those at the more mature end of the spectrum?! Oz and NZ have many attractions, but the distance as folk have said is huge, and NZ needs extra thought for anyone with medical issues.

Anywhere in Scandinavia is lovely, great standard of living . . .BUT . . .you need LOTS of money, AND if you think winter here is depressing, bear in mind they get so little daylight for several months?!

Holland & Belgium are both well organised, sensible places, easy to get back from if needed --- and they usually quite like us, due to WW2.

Spain is good, but for those who haven't been, the south gets murderously hot in summer! And I mean, in the oven hot! But anywhere like Malaga, Seville, Cordoba etc, in our winter, yes please!

Italy is great, as many have said, and I'd also nominate Portugal, (especially if you like Port !!), another country that quite likes Brits. Austria would be another consideration, some gorgeous towns and cities, if you like art, Vienna has galleries galore, and for scenery, Salzburg is one of the loveliest we've ever seen.

Oh, is anyone planning to wind down their days in say, Botswana, Tanzania (etc), as a volunteer teacher?? Warm weather pretty much guaranteed, probably lower rents, etc?!
