Butter dishes

Now that butter is so expensive, why are there no small lidded butter dishes available. I’ve searched high and low but can’t find any, other than the dishes that hold a whole pat. I’m sure I’m not the only one who only puts out enough butter for one day? Anyone got any ideas please?

Great idea

A man on the radio said that his father, an industrial chemist, asked one thing of him - never to eat margarine. He said it is apparently a few molecules away from plastic, never goes off, and flies won't touch it. How true this is I don't know, but we have always had butter - kept in a ceramic dish in the larder, it is perfect at all times and has never gone off.

Hello GransruleOk. I’m like you. I need to use a smaller butterdish in summer. I have two with lids and they hold about 1/3 of a pack of butter.

I know you can purchase on Amazon - £9.99 or you can get 2 mini glass ones with lids. I tried to get a link but it didn’t work! Good luck. 🤗

I have several butter dishes and I love them. I can’t imagine a toasted bagel with spread rather than butter

I use a small Lock and Lock plastic box which is just the right size for the average block of butter. I turn it upside down so the lid becomes the base so it's very easy to use and secure.

I have had loads of butter dishes over the years. I now have a stainless steel one so it shouldn’t break! My elder son asked me to buy him one for his birthday.

I’m the only one who uses it, so a little goes in a ramekin dish, the rest stays in the fridge.

Butter is fine in a butter dish even in hot weather. I meant to put mine in the fridge when I went away recently during the heatwave but forgot. When I came home after a week it was slightly melted but still fine to use. I keep unopened blocks in the fridge and try to remember to get one out before the last bit is used up as I can't abide hard butter - one of the worst things about winter.

Butter is coming back into fashion if anything. People are beginning to realise it is healthier than margarine, despite what the diet industry have told us over the years. I studied food and nutrition as part of my degree and we were given lots of free booklets about fats, all proclaiming the benefits of margarines, published by margarine manufacturers. Our lecturer said to us "Feel free to read them but remember who they are published by and exercise caution." I only use butter for spreading and a mix of butter and olive oil for frying.

Sadly the diet industry and food manufacturers give a lot of bad advice about nutrition and even some nutritionists get drawn in. Having studied biochemistry, and now having become type 2 diabetic, I know the real evils are ultraprocessed foods and sugar!

We have 2 butter dishes so we can get a new pack of butter out before the old one is gone. The empty one goes in the dishwasher.

I make DIY butter dishes, top of a Pringle box or instant gravy and a glass bottom from a chilled pudding, like a chocolate mousse. Take a tape measure to the supermarket! Just the right size for a small butter pat and as it's covered it's ok to get it out of the fridge early to soften up.

A ramekin with a clean lid from a plastic no drain tuna pot balanced on the top. I agree with everyone saying butter is best. But I can't eat a lot of it. The word "slathered" on crumpets makes me feel quite ill.

A Ramekin (as a lid) over a saucer would also work.

My daughter worked in a packaging factory.

The margarine/butter type spread would come back from the manufacturer with the out of date stamp on the tub. It had been stockpiled and not sold.

The factory would repackage it with a new date on the tub and send it back for sale.

The shorter sell by date was because people wouldn’t buy it if they could see it would keep for years.

She was pretty sure some came back more than once😱

Last time we were talking about butter I wondered why people were talking about "pats" of butter. To me, a pat of butter is about the size of a walnut.

I'm really enjoying this thread.

Who knew so much could be said about butter dishes?
This is my newest butter dish.

shysal Tue 19-Aug-25 09:42:55

I have one of these, several patterns to chose from. They are smaller than a standard pat of butter.

I keep my butter in a ceramic dish with wooden lid next to toaster . It doesn’t go off at all , and because it’s left out it’s softer & easier to spread on toast ect ect . If kept in fridge or in winter left out on worktop have to put it in microwave for 10 seconds or so to be able to spread properly . And butter “ out of fashion “ ……never heard of such nonsense !
Oh, and you can buy a butter dish almost anywhere .

Aldom Tue 19-Aug-25 09:48:29

Those are attractive dishes Shysal
The design is quite Turkish don't you think?

I've just looked at your link Allira I
see the butter dishes are Moroccan.
They're lovely. They would be nice gifts too.
