Tesco, shocking price hike

I find at the Co-op the special offers are nearly always sold out but Tesco doesn’t have many now does it? It used to have some good BOGOF deals but the last time I was in there didn’t seem to have any deals at all.We have to vote with our feet where supermarkets are concerned.

Yes, I've noticed that...there's a wee stray cat comes every morning for his breakfast, I always bought him a packet of chicken roll every week, It used to be £1.40...now it's £ 1.56...
also, in every supermarket I'noticed that a 9 pk kitkat.has gone from £2 to £ 2.20 for 8 pk...not just puting the price up, but you now get less ..

A quick google search shows that is the rrp in many supermarkets. I think sometimes the supermarkets sell things at the rrp for a while so they can then reduce them as an “amazing offer”, wait a few weeks and they will probably come down again as in Waitrose and Asda.
I only ever treat my husband to a Ginster pasty when they are on a deal and he never waits too long!

Many things felt too costly.

If you are lucky enough to live in a town with independent shops I'd urge you to support them. They are starting to disappear where I live. The bakery's goods tasted far better than anything from supermarkets. We really miss it. We had a wonderful fresh fish shop which has gone out of business due to lack of support but, honestly, their fish was far superior to what supermarkets sell. We have one remaining grocers shop selling wonderful freshly-baked goods and ham off the bone but I fear it may go soon. I know supermarket shopping is more convenient and often cheaper but the cheapness often comes from inferior products.

Inflation means prices are going up. Raw materials cost more, energy costs more. National insurance has gone up, minimum wages have gone up.

The price in the shop is not just the cost of providing the item but all the shops overheads. So Tesco is paying more in NI and wages, that affects the price of your pasty - and Gnsters have had to factor the same thing into their prices, and so on down the line until you reach the crops in the fields and animals they do not pay NI nor get the minimum wage.

I have noticed for weeks now Tesco prices have really increased far more than Sainsburys. I used to buy a piece of beef for 1 meal at £8.25 from Tesco . It has gone from £8.25 gradually in the past 3 months to £10.50.I no longer buy it.

I have gone today and they have gone up to £2.25p in my opinion a massive increase, needless to say I did not buy it
I seem now just to accept that prices are going to keep going up and up and up but I’m very disgusted at the way they’re going up by so much and so quickly. Seems like the supermarkets have cart Blanche to do what they like And we as consumers are more or less powerless as although we don’t need to buy a new winter coat most of us to find the need to eat. 😠😡

If I had to worry about 30 p, I would not be wasting my money on crap readymade convenience food .

In fairness butterandjam I would not regard a Ginsters’ Cornish Pasty as crap readymade convenience food.
There are no doubt more authentic recipes and I do prefer a shortcrust version instead of puff pastry -hard to find in supermarkets.

Last year, Scottish mussels in a vacuum pack were £1.59. Then up to 1.79, then 1.99. Now current price is 2.39 and that's in Lidl! That's a massive hike in price. Needless to say, as others have said. we have stopped buying them until they bring down the price to a more reasonable level. Dream on customers!

DH was grumbling about the exact same thing yesterday!!

Sorting through paperwork and working out my pensions, I find my Civil Service pension has gone up by 99p per month.
Not enough to buy even a small Ginsters pasty ☹

It might not be the same as a Ivor Dewdney pasty, but pasties is what kept the tin miners going for years!!

Waitrose used to have some special offers on steaks etc but that offer seems to have disappeared now.

When my Mum was a Guide captain they went on a behind the scenes tour of their local McDonald's.
She came back a complete convert, hugely impressed with the standards of hygiene, temperature controls, timings and general systems!

There's certainly nothing wrong with the ingredients nowadays, for example their chicken dippers are sliced breast meat not minced up dregs.

I “discovered” a white baton loaf in Tesco that stays fresh ‘til the next day and doesn’t rip my gums to bits. Crusty outside, stays intact when sliced but soft and yummy inside- could eat the lot standing up at the breadboard. It was about 60p but has shot up to about 80p suddenly.
Our local bakery shops prices for loaves have risen to eye watering heights.

It's not always the fault of the supermarkets, although I know they don't always give farmers the best deal.

Fuel prices, huge rises in the costs of fertilisers, feed etc, and now other burdens placed on farmers by the Government, all mean that production costs from field to fork have increased and these costs have to be passed on to the consumer.

Skydancer we no longer have an independent grocery, fish, bakery or butchers in my town There is one greengrocers about 2 miles from me with very high prices so it is no choice but supermarkets
MacDonalds do an excellent vegi wrap I only have it if we re on a journey but it s certainly not the crap that some people think Grandmaderby

I have no idea how the Government can say inflation is 3.6%. I would say its at least 10% probably near 20!

I’m sure their standards are excellent but they are still quite tasteless and unsatisfying. I sometimes can’t tell I’ve eaten anything and am still hungry afterwards. Which should ring alarm bells. It is certainly unusual for me, ……but perhaps this is why they are so successful and why so many are addicted to their burgers and why they are criticised heavily as the root of all that is evil in foodland.

I totally agree.
We are not here to sit in judgement but to discuss the rise in prices of everyday groceries.

They are all so expensive!

I use the Trolley app (also website Trolley.co.uk) which shows the prices of various items across a number of stores. Apparently Ginsters pasties are on offer at Waitrose at the moment for £1.75 instead of the now more usual £2.25, so you can have your treat after all if there is a Waitrose near you!

I think the world’s gone mad and the rise in prices is huge - it must be dreadful for families who have very little. I looked at the beef and lamb in tescos last week and just put it straight down again as the prices were so high. Always buy stuff that’s on offer where possible. Also life’s got so confusing with what we should and shouldn’t eat/fast and convenience foods all being given a bad name etc. No wonder we have so many overweight people in the UK - we’ve been fed incorrect information for so long and also had so many additives added to so many foods. It makes life confusing for so many. I like to support small independents when possible but couldn’t do all my shopping on them .
