Holey T shirts!

This may sound ridiculous but it's beyond a joke! I keep my t shirts hanging in a wardrobe, shared with my husband. Some time back I noticed the t shirt I was wearing had a small pattern of holes just below my navel. Old t shirt, moths, I thought. Threw it away. Then there was another. And another. And another. All with holes in the same place. I stopped wearing a belt but I've worn a belt for years without this happening. Nearly all my t shirts are the same now, regardless of thickness or age.... My husband's, same wardrobe, absolutely fine. Yesterday, I was in a small clothes shop for the more mature lady, and overheard a lady at the till chatting to the sales assistant, saying she was replacing a t shirt with holes in that she couldn't account for.... Is it me????

Curlywhirly, he does all the cooking, I can't use that as a reason!grin

I'm sorry, but you are all spending far too much time in your kitchens, it's where you lean against the worktop or sink. Less cooking and washing up means less holes. {smile}

This problem has been talked about for years. It’s not only from your counter tops (being rubbed against edging) but caused by what gets sprayed on them and on any surface edge your tummy touches - restaurant table, check out , shop counter, etc etc. all use sprays to disinfect and clean and it ends up on the front of your teeth shirt.

I've heard it's worktops, and given it doesn't happen to the husbands t shirts is suspicious, unless he is a rare specimen that cooks and washes up as much as you do. It doesn't happen to me but I am tall so worktop is lower down.

Oh no I refuse to go down the “t-shirt tucked in” road.
I’d sooner chop them down to a cropped top.

Only 3 weeks ago I was in a large store that I now have to visit instead of shopping on line. Rummaging on the racks of clothing what did I find, moths fluttering about between items. They are everywhere at the moment and will be scrutinising any clothing I buy.

I think it might be just marble or similar counter tops- which have become popular in kitchens in recent years. But it is not moths because obviously they wouldn’t all congregate in one area of your garments.
…..unless ….moth conspiracy,😱

Does your husband tuck his t shirts into his trousers?

Jaxjacky Sat 02-Aug-25 14:58:40

I don’t get this problem and wear jeans, or zipped shorts all the time, obvious not enough time spent in the kitchen!
I just checked, being tall the worktop comes lower down than the OP.

See my post earlier and FreedomAwaits’ and one other up thread or just Google it. It is a thing🤗

I don’t wear jeans for work, more often half elasticated trousers or drawstring for a good fit nowdays (female privilege)… but where the little “moth holes” occur depends on your height really. Mine are belly button area.

I don’t have this problem but am wondering if it could be cross body handbags rubbing in a particular place and causing the material to deteriorate, especially if part of the buckle is sharp.

pably15 Sat 02-Aug-25 14:08:40

it's never happened with my T shirts, but I only wear pull on elasticated waists, and don't wear jeans...so could be zips and fasteners..

FreedomAwaits Sat 02-Aug-25 14:06:46

We started getting these on our t shirts - mostly mine but hubby and sons too. We took ages to work it out but for us, it was the granite worktop we had with our new kitchen. The edges are really sharp. I now have a tea towel draped over the sink so when I’m leaning, whatever I’m wearing doesn’t rub. So far so good.

I ruined a lot of cotton tops exactly the same way since I had my new kitchen. I have a stone worktop with a slight bevel on the corner. It is definitely the friction as I move around the worktop cooking or washing up. I now either wear an apron or bend over slightly so my top is not rubbing along the worktop. Has cured the problem of ruining all my favourite cotton tops

Sealady ..and others, you all laugh at the thought of DH sneakily wearing your clothes while you're out.
Don't laugh, it happens ( more common than you think and for many reasons)
Yes , it happened to me and made life a bit rocky for a while.
However, he is hurting no one and is the same lovely chap I married 44 years ago so we have dealt with it .
Yes , it's amusing but not really!

Women tend to wear clothes too tight imo.
Try the next size up T shirt to see if it reduces the problem.
Men don't usually wear things skin tight so less pressure

I have seen this discussion on other sites - it seems it is the t shirt rubbing against jeans' zips/buttons when you lean against kitchen worktops. Sealady I presume it doesn't happen to your husband as he obviously doesn't do as much cooking/dishwashing as you do!

I have the same problem. It didn’t used to happen but in the last decade or so, it’s very common, which makes me discount the idea of zips and buttons on jeans and trousers being the culprit, as I’ve worn jeans and trousers for years. I wonder if it’s more to do with the quality of the cotton used and the manufacturing process?

This is exactly my thought. But why doesn't it happen to my husband's clothes? And it doesn't matter whether it's an M+S tshirt, Hush or Primark.... in fact Primark - my very oldest tshirt - has only lately succumbed!

I have the same problem and it is I think the metal button on my jeans so I have looked at some button covers (Yes there are such thing) on line and will be purchasing these as I have got holes in 3 fine knit jumpers and numerous T shirts.

That's a good plan - worth a try

It is clearly because when you are out your DH is wearing your tees and the belt of his trousers is causing the holes.😆

Now there's a vision.....

It isn’t something I have noticed but will now go off and check.

Also this!

Methinks some of ladies have bellybutton rings that you aren't admitting!
