O just say "oh, ok"
Am I being taken for granted, or is this just what being a grandparent is today?
What medical conditions seem more common now than when you were growing up?
Yesterday I was discussing weight loss injections with a relative who has just lost 22lbs on the carnivore diet. He was totally against this diet when DH started it just after Christmas, now is loving results. However after watching something on TV about WLI (think it was Tonight), he's now an 'expert' on the dangers of the injections.
Having read lots about it over the last few months and spoken to nurse at our health centre I was about to mention what I've researched. Then I thought, I just can't be bothered so replied "Indeed"
Is it my age ?(almost 64), is it now I'm retired and spend most of my time at home with my dog?
I just can't be bothered with people š
O just say "oh, ok"
Mmm think of First they came for the Jews⦠from the pulpit of pastor niemoller.. āand I did not speak out and then they came for me.ā
Itās hard to speak out against the fashion but we need to. Against the the gender ideologues, against the anti semitic pro Palestinians. Though I have to admit donāt ever bring it up. THe first injunction of the ideologue is āno debateā.
If itās a serious subject you should always listen. Iāve also noticed though that some people are too competitive to listen. They have to shut you down even if you are stating some really non contentious interesting researched fact.
If I disagree I do say so and why. I enjoy a debate and will happily be free to disagree or often have my mind changed. (Donāt have many friends any more, love dogs š¤)
Love it perfect response!
Indeed Rocks. Smart,Sophisticated snd really puts people on the spot.
As in you are talking rubbish. To put it mildly.
It is now rarely used and l think it will
sadly die out completely with the of all of us oldies.
Best to let him have his say. Older men like to do this.
However, do watch out for the follow up that "we agreed", if you do not debate when it affects your life. I like to treat my DGS in the holidays when he comes to me - hubby said " play spaces are getting ridiculously expensive", so next time we went out, his rant was "we AGREED that you would not spend money on play spaces"
As to spending time at home, you have spent years having to go out, interact, share, so now is your time not to if you do not want to, but keep contact with close friends and pick your outings to suit your mood, so that if you do want to, you still have the options.
Mmmm and indeed serve me very well!
It's not just you.
pea007 There We Are Then Iāll have to remember that one šš
Well if it's not a conversation you're going to enjoy, that's a pretty good and inoffensive way to refuse to have it. Nice move.
For menindeed signals agreement so I prefer Is that so ?or really?
'Interesting' is also a good one.
On the subject of diets I actually do think the whole subject is fascinating. Things have moved so far on from the calorie-counting doctrine and people are finding diets that work for them, listening to their bodies, having good nutrition etc. But a weight loss DRUG?? No thanks. And I would not trust the opinion/advice of professionals who are largely funded by drug companies. I have one word for all of that - thalidomide.
I belonged to a discussion group. It ended up with one member hogging the limelight and when someone else wanted to put their thoughts across they would be cut of with " well then...." and the hogger would carry on, not giving anyone else a chance. Needless to say, I am no longer a member of the group.
There are some people which you just know itās not worth giving an opinion either because they know theyāre right and they wonāt change their mind come hell or high water or they just want an argument.
With these people I donāt bother giving my point of view and just say to them There We Are Then (twat). Makes me feel better
Don't bother to debate, howver it is sad that at your age 64 you can't be bothered with people, I feel sad for you. I am 84 and can very much be bothered with people. For goodness' sake go out walking with your dog and say "hello, good morning or good afternoon to people" It will enrich your life and maybe help you to have a happier outlook on life. I do that and have made good friends by being pleasant.
I also know a GSC Chicklette, unfortunately heās my ex son in law. He will now for ever be known as Gobshite Gary.
I know a man who knows EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING. I call him Gobshite Gary (not to his face obviously!) My DH has shortened it to GSG. I am one for just saying Mmm when he starts. I like indeed, but worry itāll make him think I agree with him. He probably knows more about periods and giving birth than I do š
Not just you..I can't be bothered with people, except family and close friends. You are a mere youngster I'm 69....lol
Yes, the less people know the more certain they feel about knowing something, Trump is a great example. It's called the Dunning Kruger curve - another example of this is Theranos, a company founded by Elizabeth Holmes, a college dropout with no business or medical experience, who sold investors on ideas that were based on flawed medical research. She was probably confident that she knew what she was talking about.
Hi Ziggy I think age has something to do with it, I enjoy a peaceful lifestyle now and often donāt engage in debate if I know I have no chance in changing someoneās opinion. Iām happy to discuss topics with open minded people though
I'm about to turn 60 and I feel quite like you. I absolutely adore a good debate (as some may or may not have seen, LOL!).
However, when it comes to what I like to call "flat-liners", those who absolutely are not telling you their opinion because they want to share in the information and learn more.
There are also people who are open to looking at as much factually based information sources as possible, when it comes to a very important decision or opinion.
In this type of situation, it's an absolute no-no for me, personally. Why waste your energy? Why waste your breath? If you know this person is not going to participate in an open dialogue, then what is the point, really?
This quote comes to mind, though I know it sounds a bit edgy; "Don't cast your pearls before swine." But you get what I mean.
Wishing you the best and good for you, in considering taking care of yourself and your time. It's all important. YOU are important.
Take care!

Love your response Grannygravy. Must try to remember that!
I just say ā well, we are all entitled to our opinion, Xā, and change the subject before they ask what mine is.
I love a debate with certain of the people I know who challenge me and help me to develop my understanding and attitude. But increasingly deciding not to waste my energy with others, who donāt want to debate but just state their opinions. I canāt find it in me to agree with things - mostly just say nothing and change the subject if I can. I am definitely getting fussier about who I spend time with and quietly avoiding the āmood hooversā (which includes some close relatives). Life is too short - Iād rather be gardening, reading a book or out doing something I am going to actually enjoy!
Just be careful not to confuse āresearchā with ācollecting opinionsā. Very often itās the misguided cranks who shout the loudest.
Iām a bit of a pleaser, itās an ā absolutelyā from me.
