Cash or Card?

I use cash for pretty much everything I'm paying for in person -
- small local purchases
- workmen (as I sometimes get charged less for paying that way and, as I'm/I always have been single = I look at it as a way to get a bit of money back so to say for the thousands of £s p.a. extra it costs to be single)
- some of the local taxi drivers here only take cash and so I pay them all in cash

I'm doing it partly because I find it quite convenient that way and partly to make sure they can't stop us using cash.

There isn't a branch of my bank in this town - so I get my cash from the local post office.

If you get charged less by workmen if you pay in cash it’s because they’re not going to declare it to HMRC - as you know about the two-tier pricing you’re guilty of conspiracy. Stop thinking of it as getting something back and start thinking what being drawn into an investigation by HMRC would do to you. Believe me, it happens.

Also - I've never taken cash from a cashpoint machine - just in case of thieves amending them. Where I am right now = I know there is a thief living only a few doors away from the nearest cashpoint to me anyway.

Local small independent shops and cafes will only take cash. A local book charity will only take cash. I mix and match card/cash. When our town had power cuts bank cards were of no use.

Because using a credit card gives you various protections. I always use a credit card, except very small purchases for which I pay cash, and make sure it’s paid off each month.

I never understood why people use credit cards like this. If you can pay it off in full why borrow on it in the first place?

Credit card every time.......paid off in full when the statement arrives. There's no fee and I get loyalty points too.

I do carry cash but use that for random purchases such as on a market stall, tips at a restaurant etc.

Always use both.

We always have cash in the house (in a secret place upstairs. It seems to sit there for months and then get used all of a rush.

We have a pot for coins in a drawer in the kitchen and sometimes have consciously break into a note to replenish that. We also keep coins in both cars.

Card for me. Think I've had the same tenner in my wallet for a month now.

Always cash for supermarket and shops. Only use card for occasional online purchase.

I almost always use my card. I might use cash for something under £5, eg a birthday card. My window cleaner will only take cash, which is really annoying.

I always draw out a certain amount of cash every week to use at Tesco, the rest of the time I use my card.

I don’t take my purse or cards out shopping and always pay with my phone. Yesterday I wanted to return an item to Aldi and popped in as I was psssing after a wet dog walk. The cashier said she couldn’t process the refund to my phone (other stores do) so she gave me the refund in cash. I went straight to the M&S Foodhall next door to buy a jar of coffee, and paid cash at a self-scan till. I requested a receipt, collected my change, then faffed about as I had wet gloves and phone in my hand, dog treats in one pocket, poo bags and keys in another, and as I left the store I shook out my gloves, got my car key out, dropped the coins into the driest pocket… and drove 9 miles home… leaving the jar of coffee on the till! Had I paid with my phone that wouldn’t have happened.

I rang M&S and spoke to a lady who had literally just put my forgotten coffee back on the shelf. Luckily I do always get a printed receipt, she assured me they’ll give me a jar when I next go to town.

Mostly !!

Card misty
Bank transfer for gardener , window cleaner, occasional tradesmen.
DD for monthly bills.
Cash very occasionally for taxis although they accept cards now but the drivers moan as they don’t get their money straightaway.
I even give tips in restaurants now on my card as they state the staff get 100%. I always used to give tips in cash but rarely carry much now.

Phone usually

We use cash as much as we can, usually have about £60 on me
I agree with Barleyfields maybe your husband could do the shopping, you’re doing your best.

I use my card for almost everything, but I do have a £10 note tucked into my phone for any unforeseen emergency. I’m quite organised and not careless/reckless with money.
While I was never keen on the DDs using cash on night outs, it did mean they didn’t overspend. When it was gone, it was gone.

I like to use cash if I can

I use my phone but usually have £20 and a couple of £1 coins just in case.

I use my card all the time rarely need cash ever I don’t spend more using card.

I use both. Cash for everyday items, card for bigger shops. Works for me.

My monthly bills are paid from my account. I try to use cash as much as possible. After all, as I say to anyone who will listen, what would the Tooth Fairy do without cash?

I'm the complete opposite. If I have cash I'll wantonly spend it.

I'm much more thrifty with my card.
