I was told yesterday that the thumbs up emoji and sign, is now classed as aggressive. I asked my DGD, she confirmed. This symbol has been used as ; OK, Great, Iβm Fine for years by the armed services, divers and every day people. Woke has gone mad. Please stop the world, I want to get off. ππ» ππ» ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»
I don't think anyone anywhere has said it is forbidden to use the thumbs up emoji. Why do independent older women need to be 'allowed' to do anything, and who is 'controlling' us?
I think the truth is that this is another way in which younger people differentiate themselves from older ones. They roll their eyes at expressions that they find dated, just as we did, and just as their children will do in their turn.
People can choose whether to be offended or not, just as they can choose whether to use the symbol or not. It is often useful to know whether things we do might be perceived in ways other than we intend them, though, so that our choices are informed ones.
Do people still use the term woke? It's American isn't it?
It did originate in America. It was first used in a song by a black American blues singer in 1938. In the song it is used as stay awake to racial intentions. If I remember correctly.
What a load of woke rubbish! No wonder young people have mental health problems. Get a life - get off your phone and actually talk to someone !! ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»π

Who are you addressing with this comment? Did you send it from your phone? Were you talking to someone at the time, and was the post sent from beyond the grave?
like to explain how on earth this particular debate on π has anything whatsoever to do with "woke?"
That's what I was thinking. Isn't this to do with the changing perception of symbols, in the same way as words (which are only symbols after all) change in meaning. "Gay" comes to mind, but there are others.

They walk into it every time, donβt they π€¦πΌββοΈ
Think I'm going to start say "spiffing". "Yes, thank you, that's spiffing!" "Would you mind setting the table for me Darling? That would be quite spiffing!"
I use the thumbs up to let someone know I have read their email which doesn't need a reply.. I haven't come to terms with "woke" Who decided to use the past tense of wake in a different context. What does it mean?

The die was cast in 1895 when The Post Office trunk telephone system was opened to the public.
We've been 'on the phone' ever since, and no-one is going to "get off" it in order to secure a "life" that you appear to think they don't have.
The definition of woke: Aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).
Language evolves and in the same way "Sick" means something completely different these days, I suspect "Woke" means something different to an awful lot of people. The definition will probably change officially at some point.
Surprisingly, it is also considered rude in Australia.
That came as a big surprise to my Australian family and friends (Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide) Perhaps it the same as with the UK. Some find it rude in OZ and others donβt.
