In their defence, celebrities are often contracted to promote films/TV on chat show appearances. I remember Hugh Grant in particular really moaning in some interview or other about having to tout the latest film around.

Sick of celebrities
(162 Posts)I know some will say 'read a better class of newspaper' but the papers this morning may as well be renamed the Taylor Swift Diaries. I don't enjoy politics and like to read light hearted news but I'm sick of reading about the Beckhams flaunting their wealth, the Kardashians latest child, who's nepo baby is succeeding at what, etc ðŸ˜
Yes I agree*Abcdfg*. And those celebs have often had ‘help’ in writing , whatever.
I loathe the chat shows with celebs pushing their new film/book/play, especially on the BBC where there is supposed to be no advertising.
I like Simon Reeve too, he really has a heart. He was on tv this w eek in Greece ( repeat) as the asylum seekers came in on boats, onto Kos I think, and after talking to them he had to wipe his eyes.
He didn’t have an easy start in life which is probably why he can empathise with others who have little.
JKR is pretty awesome.

Simon Reeve is adorable (in my opinion).
Yes, he’s the one I can watch!
I know Michael Palin is a lovely bloke and all that, but I’m sick of seeing him on TV - unfortunately dh will still watch anything with him in - if he’s aware that it’s on. I’m hoping he won’t twig about the Nigeria series. If he does, that’ll be me, escaping the sitting room PDQ.
People here have to go overseas to become successful. Thinking Kylie Minogue. We cut down the tall poppies, it seems to be a nasty habit of ours.
I hate the cult of celebrity and if you have a famous parent success is guaranteed .
I know three people , who went to stage school and go to endless auditions and fail to get a small part because they aren't known .
Each of them resort to badly paid work in between auditions .

Saying you would never have the DM in your house is surely very snobbish and superior. Why not just say you don’t read it?
Not snobbish and superior at all! I glimpse the odd headline on line and in newsagents, and realise it’s a right wing racist rag with an over-reliance on ‘slebs’. The ‘I’ is pretty well neutral and has some excellent articles. I read CNN on line as well as Fox News, so that’s a pretty good range of views. I also read the Sydney Morning Herald on line as I have several family members living in Australia. The DM, though is in entirely a class of its own. Just to rub up GSM a bit more - I was accidentally delivered a DM and put it straight in the outside bin.
It's like saying you once saw a headline in The Guardian and as a consequence wouldn't even use it to line the cat's litter tray.
It's like the No-platforming at universities, only allowing those you agree with to speak. Only reading articles you agree with leads to a closed mind.

I detest the DM would not read it at any price! It embodies every political opinion I abhor so this is yet another reason to avoid like the plague!
You don't mind litter and paying for hospital Carparks, then? Both DM campaigns.
Amongst the celeb tat and some views you disagree with there are campaigns to right wrongs.
If you never read it, how do you know?
I read Private Eye too. I’ve been a subscriber for decades.

Brooklyn Beckham is definitely a Nepo child now man. No talent as a chef or photographer imo.
Romeo has made it on his own merits though, as both a footballer and a model- the name may have helped, but more importantly he has inherited his dad’s looks, the lucky boy!

Does anyone on GN get a huge bright red 1/2 page where an ad should be? Im getting this all the time. It must be GN as it happens nowhere else
Yes!!! flipping annoying.
I read bits of The Guardian online, but really dislike that they do not support women's choices and spaces. Two good women columnists gone because of it, so awful.
Most of my news is from Private Eye, especially stuff that some don't want you to know about.
undines Wouldn't ever buy one - why put my little bit of money into the pockets of the media moguls? Very little they print is to be trusted because they are following the agenda - however subtle - of the person who owns the paper. If we stop buying these rags they will go out of print - end of.
Be very careful what you wish for!
I really don't think you want the newspapers to out of business because then we will be left with the wild west of online news, well known for its fakery, and this will get much worse with the advent of AI which can totally manipulate the truth.
We need newspapers more than ever because they do have to abide by certain regulations which the online news sources definitely don't. And as long as we have a variety of newspapers we know that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. For all their faults they are very precious.
I subscribe to an online newspaper. A one I consider fairly decent even if I don’t always agree with its POV. It has a fair smattering of celebrity news which I rarely more than glance at before complaining in its comments section, along with many other subscribers, that these articles exist at all there. I buy a newspaper for news and informed opinion not for rubbish about ‘celebrities’ in whose lives I couldn’t be less interested.
I think it started with The Osbornes letting the camera into their homes- I never could understand what the lure was. Maybe it started earlier, but I know that's when I began to notice people talking about it.
I think reality TV started with a programme called 'Fly on the Wall' in the 70s Keepingquiet. Many were horrified by the concept!
This is refreshing to read after years of wondering what this so called celebrity obsession was all about.

Maybe the tide has turned?
What really gets me (I don't buy newspapers) is even the on-line news has wind-up headlines about the death and destruction in various parts of the planet and then follows this with an item about Taylor Swift and her clothes. The world must be ok then, if this 'news' is considered important.
Kate1949 Simon Reeve is adorable (in my opinion).
Me too. Just love his programmes
Nothing more boring than celebrity trivia.
Never bother with newspapers
Except occasionally the cryptic crossword
