I totally agree with you , the whole idea of an advent calendar is lost and I also feel the prices of some totally ridiculous! How can people afford them ?!?

Just had a look at the John Lewis one, I would use everything in that!! That’s my Xmas order sent to my husband!!

I hate to say it but by budgeting

Can’t wait to get mine, lots of useful products , many travel sized too. What I don’t want I’ll give to the food bank as a little extra for Christmas parcels, someone will love a unexpected treat .

I’ve just been given a jigsaw advent calendar. Every day there is a small section of puzzle in a box to do. I think it’s a great idea and I can reuse it every year.

I didn't treat myself to M&S advent calendar last year but just had the Boots one. This year, because I can afford it, I have treated myself to both. The items I don't want, I shall give away. I have also treated myself to a Cadbury's advent calendar. This year, most of my money has gone on food. We didn't have a holiday this year so these are treats to myself.

My son in law buys it every year as a Customer raffle prize for my daughter’s hair salon. Everyone who has an appointment in November and December gets entered into the draw!!

I'm with Maddyone, GrandMattie and Bluebell. When young my DDs always had a religious calendar with doors that led up to Christmas Day (although they now discuss the relative merits of the commercial calendars every October!). Traditionally Advent was a time of fasting and parties were held after Christmas in the twelve days until 6 January. In the church it was a time for thinking about the four last things, death, judgement, heaven and hell. Don't these sumptuous calendars rather overshadow Christmas - what do you buy someone for Christmas when they've had an expensive treat every day for a month?

I discovered this gorgeous advent calendar for little ones today. It's all wooden and can be used year after year.

I have a wooden advent tree that the GC love to put one of the decorations on every day of Advent.

I agree with you Maddyone. Well done to M&S for selling a Christmas Advent calendar with a nativity scene.

When I was a girl my beautiful glittery German Advent calendars were just the Christmas story bible verses. We lit candles every Sunday. I carried that ritual all the way into my new (adulthood) family life.

Now, 30-40 years later everyone is getting in on the act. Do we really need a case of wine or a toy or cosmetic everyday to celebrate Advent?

Having ordered some brushed cotton bed linen the other day, I have to admit clicking on to the offer, I've broken my arm so I need something nice to cheer myself up, I think this thread gave me the impetus to indulge! From the pictures it does seem packed with some nice pieces, good value at £45, although has to be said who would pay the non discounted price of £300 plus

I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, TerriBull - at around £1.80 a day it’s great value, and hardly the extravagant self-indulgence some want it to be! I hope the arm heals well - it’s a misery, isn’t it?

My son-in-law paid full price for it last year, probably the only person ever. He knew DD1 was planning to get it and thought he’d surprise her. He had no idea how it worked. You can imagine how quickly she hot-footed it to M & S to sort it out!

I can’t say we were impressed by the person on the till who didn’t explain it to him.

I have also avoided any publicity for what is in them this year, I like a surprise.

Ordered Friday and arrived yesterday.
I use Percy and Reed hair products so that is what I bought to get the offer.
I received those in a M&S Advent calendar a few years ago and have used them ever since so it does have its uses.
I haven’t even opened the cardboard box and won’t do so until December 1st.

I did once buy the M&S one for dd2 when spending whatever it was anyway. Dd1 wouldn’t really be interested and would hardly bother to use most of it.

For myself I’m very happy with just a ‘little pictures’ one.

However one non-picture AC I can imagine welcoming, would be a socks one - really comfortable, soft, bamboo socks. Or ditto really nice, comfortable (but attractive) knickers - that is, before I cleared out all the really ancient ones and treated myself to a nice new lot anyway. 🙂

I don’t buy them because I know they would be full of things I wouldn’t use. That would bring me no joy at all. I like the old fashioned Advent calendars with a religious theme.

I shall be looking at the website to see what I need.
I bought a padded jacket last week, if I had known I would have waited a week.
Last year my GD and I shared the the M&S and Boots but Boots have changed the format this year and it is not to my liking.
We may just have a luxury choc one instead.

Has anyone seen the M & S Christmas advert, set to Meatloaf's, "I'll do anything for love, but I won't do that"? I'm a bit puzzled by it, I think it means do just what you want and bother the rest of them, but it's certainly not up there with the true message of Christmas ones.
Bring on the John Lewis Christmas advert, hope it's a tear jerky meaningful one.
