Years ago I bought a pyrex jug which has a separate lid. It is solid, but does not cover the spout so provides ventilation while preventing splashing. I have never seen one on sale since. I have bought ventilated plastic covers since then, but for some items eg reheating a portion of stew, a casserole dish with its own glass lid is fine.
Anything thick like soup or sauces is likely to splatter as bubbles of steam will build up in the middle, rise to the top and burst, causing splattering. "Thin" liquids like water or milk don't need covering as they heat more evenly.
I don't use a microwave but was aware of covering foods especially liquids during heating - however there will be people who hadn't thought of it. ...They just aren't posting here.
Whether it came with instructions or not. Who recalls the gas advert "do any of us read the instructions?" I'll sleep peacefully in the bed thats thousands of Gransnet posters/viewers who have not made comments have said. I'm glad I know that info now,and past this info onto non Gransnet subscribers.
It would have told you this in the information that came with the microwave infoman
You would think do, wouldnt you, but out of curiosity, I have just looked through the booklet that came with my newest microwave, and couldn't find any suggestion/ instruction that food should be covered to prevent splattering.
I am going to assume that because microwaves have been around so long now, it is taken for granted that everyone already knows this.
Well we can only know what we know, as they say. I was lucky, my first microwave came with a set of splatter lids with steam vents, that have come in handy ever since.
Thanks for all your replys. Life is a learning curve, and I didn't know about covering the item. Is that my fault for not finding out OR that some one has never told me? For all the comments about I should have known,I bet there must be thousands on here thinking I'm glad I know that now.
Bought new microwave and found that every time we heated up soup the liquid got splattered all over the inside of the microwave. Contacted customer services to make a comment, they said just put a plate over the bowl you are using. Hey Presto, the jobs a good un.
