Hubby and his aftershave!

I LOVE Youth Dew because my darling mum used to wear it. Prior to that she was into 4711.
I have a couple of different perfumes which I have rquested for Christmas/Birthday but I hardly ever remember to put any on

My darling dad, who only ever used Old Spice, would comment when faced with someone wearing an overpowering aftershave/cologne: "cor, smells like a Turkish wrestler's jockstrap" - a phrase I use to this day, particularly when DH has been somewhat liberal with the Sauvage ...

I love your post. This reminds me of my dad and yes, my husband was wearing Eau Sauvage. He now calls it Old Savage!

My ex husband had a problem with Youth Dew. We were waiting for the lift in a hotel once, and when the doors opened he said loudly "Aaargh! Youth Dew" and refused to get in it.

My DH is also very liberal with his aftershave. When we worked for the same company, everyone knew when he was in his office as they could smell his aftershave from down the corridor.

Nowadays, he doesn't wear it as much but when he does, I don't bother wearing perfume as his aftershave is so overwhelming. I have told him this but it makes no difference.

Have to say when I was in my teens one of my boyfriends used to wear Brut. They still make it but it doesn't smell the same. I didn't especially like it but when I found an old bottle of it a while ago, the smell of it transported me straight back to being 15 - sigh

I agree that Youth Dew was awful. My ex MIL used to wear it.

Maybe he's just using too much, ravenscroft. I had a similar problem (headaches, breathing difficulties) when MrB started using a spray bottle of after shave he'd used for years with no ill effects on me. Before he'd been dabbing on a very small amount. The spray bottle put a lot more into the atmosphere and furnishings!

As a COPD sufferer most perfumes have me reaching for my inhaler, even standing in the post office queue behind the wearer.
Orlin doesn’t wear aftershave for my sake. I do love his freshly showered body wearing a well laundered shirt though.

A lot of people seem to splash perfumes and after shaves on like water. We were having coffee one day when I started to sneeze and couldn't breathe. Mr A was sneezing too and we realized it was a woman sitting near us who was wearing very strong (and quite revolting IMO) perfume. We went and sat outside in the cold and when she walked past later even outside I was sneezing.

Youth Dew makes me feel quite nauseous but that may be because my almost-MiL wore it a lot so it reminds me of her two-timing son 😁

I remember Denim used to be a popular aftershave with a boyfriend back in the day and I loved Apple Blossom previously mentioned.

I am told there was a large advert for Eau Sauvage in Manchester Town Centre which was changed to Eau Sausage so its been that with my SIL who wears it ' just splashing on some sausage' he says before we go out.

My late MIL used to wear Estee Lauder's Youth Dew, which always gave me a headache. I think it's a horrible smell.

Youth Dew was the smell of my youth, we all wore it as students and whole lecture rooms smelled of it. It takes me back when I get a whiff. My BIL complained that even their dog smelled of it. The one that took over was Rive Gauche.
Luckily neither DH nor I like heavy perfumes or aftershave we both like citrus. ones. He did like a very expensive one SIL got for Christmas, maybe next year.

I'm remember my dad and his Old Spice, my goodness it was strong. I love a man smelling all clean and fresh, but some do go overboard with their aftershave.
I pass some school pupils when I walk my dog in the afternoon and you can smell the boys coming a mile off. It wasn't like that when I was at school, they hardly washed their faces.
I find Poison too strong and another perfume that gives me a headache is Eternity.

I wish I could get my husband to wear aftershave. I have bought it in the past but he just doesn't wear it.

My late MIL gave me a bottle of Youth Dew for Christmas present eons ago. When it was nearly finished my DH husband said it smelt like gin on me, and please could I buy something else.

Youth dew reminds me of Annabels nightclub in Peterborough in my youth ! The ladies toilets had a gadget that squirted youth dew everywhere smelt of it !
I use Angel nowadays or something lighter

My current husband won't use any 'scents' but he likes Imperial Leather soap. An ex of mine wore Polo, very nice😉

It was Topaz that got me - every other female seemed to be wearing it where I worked, I felt so ill. Youth Dew wasn't a problem, ironically!

I went to a Verdi recital at the Royal Chapel in Versailles on Saturday night and someone was wearing a very strong perfume that was "catching in my throat" all evening. Trying to supress the fits of coughing ruined the evening. Not just me, I might add.

I try to visit cathedrals who have concerts and recitals, in this country, as I love the atmosphere. Especially around Christmas. But you have given me the idea of venturing further afield.

I can sympathise with your annoyance as I cannot tolerate strong perfumes either, and would react the same way.

I used to love the smell of Brut back in the day........many years ago. But now I smells nothing like the original.
Youth Dew is just dreadful, far too heavy and sickly.
My OH like Sauvage but uses far too much and I'm sure it 'goes off' as the day wears on as it smells really odd later in the day - anyone else noticed this??

I don’t like strong exotic smells either and have never found a perfume I like since Clarins discontinued Elysian. I do like some if the aftershaves though especially Aramis but it’s so distinctly a man’s scent that I wouldn’t wear it myself. While we’re at it why do young men, teenagers especially spray horrible cheap deodorant all over themselves and their clothes?
Do they think it will attract the girls 😂

Dh has been given aftershave now and then but never wears it. I sometimes use a Versace one he was given - nice and light and fresh. I hate heavy, musky scents now, though can remember liking both Youth Dew and Poison many decades ago!

Talking of perfume intolerances, at maybe 14 I was given some Hartnell’s In Love hand cream (IIRC) for a birthday, which was passed round a few friends during a biology lesson in the lab.

Almost immediately our biology teacher had streaming eyes and exited in a hurry, saying she was allergic to somebody’s ‘powder’ - presumably she meant talc, poor old thing - of course we were all highly amused though.

I'd like to try Youth Dew now!

I've not been tempted to, because it sounds too airy fairy, but I do like a nice heady perfume.

I look forward to the day when the smell of perfume is as socially unacceptable as that of cigarette smoke. If you don’t like how you smell, wash!

I never wear any perfume as my DH complains it gives him a headache. He couldn't walk into the ground floor of many department stores (when they still existed!) because of the strong smell from the perfume department.

Poison and youth dew give me a headache too.

Poison would start me off with a migraine every time my mother wore it and I was stuck in the car with her. She absolutely loved it though bless her, Interesting to learn it was not only me. My sister in law always used Youth Drew, it was lovely on her but awful on me, likewise Opium was fabulous on my bosses girlfriend but vile on me. Funny how perfumes smells so different on different skin. Smells, taste and music always remind of people, sometimes also people's mannerism and sayings.
