Had to share this: Strange Place Names 🇬🇧

Has this been mentioned - Pratts Bottom in Kent?
or Pease Pottage in West Sussex.?

"Upper and Lower Slaughter are two of the loveliest unspoilt villages in the Cotswolds. There are two theories of the origin of their name: the name Slaughter comes from the old English word "Slothre" meaning muddy, and so it became known as muddy crossings of the River Eye."

"In terms of old Scottish place names, 'Slap' is a pass, or shallow valley between hills. Lucky Slap near Monikie is so called due to it's position between the hills of Bankhead and Hillhead. According to the book 'The Monikie Story' by Rev. W.---"

There is a small village called Lucky Slap near Monikie in Angus, Scotland.

Sorry if I’m repeating and it’s already on here, but scrolling on phone I can’t see a couple of villages near me ‘Lower Slaughter’ and ‘Upper Slaughter’ both absolutely stunning, picture perfect, film set kind of places.

Dull, in Perthshire, is twinned with Boring in Oregon, USA. They also have some link with Bland in Australia.

Yes, Miss, please Miss, I did!!

Dull, Perthshire, is on the map but has anybody mentioned yet that it has a twinning arrangement with the town of Boring, Oregon?

Fannie’s Piece, Dorset.

My first serious boyfriend lived in Pratts Bottom.....

I'm from Canada but owned a business which took us to Pennsylvania, u.s.a. many strange names in that state. Blue balls, virginville, intercourse, panic, etc. Check it out. You'll get several chuckles.

You mean Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch? I can say that as I'm half Welsh and was determined to learn it. Here is the correct pronunciation and the meaning too.

Not a village but an extremely cute road name near Cropredy.

My husband can say that Welsh place name correctly, a feat in itself. We have a village near us called Willey, I believe the village name sign is often stolen.

There is a road up near the gold fields in Victoria called Titwobble Lane. The mind boggles !

“Rest and be thankful”, not amusing really but the inscription on the bench at the top of a very steep hill,
“Traveller, rest and be thankful”. Apt and quite poetic.

Did the Pendle witches realise that they named it thrice? Pendle Hill. Pen=hill Dell=hill . hill= hill. I prefer " Friendly "in Yorkshire

Where I was brought up, the villages round us were, Stair, Moscow, Straiton and Girdle Toll

Would it put anyone off buying a property in these places or roads?

There is a village in France called Condom

There is a road in my town called Creasen Butt Close. Apparently Creasen Butt was a local councillor. What a name to be lumbered with!

And my husband told me that the local police station in a fenland village was in a,road called Pig Lane.

On a holiday in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland, abbreviation VD, we drove through a village called La Cure VD

Cockermouth in Cumbria, Quaking Houses in County Durham, and a housing estate near me has a street named Greendyke Close.

I can't imagine telling someone your address and not wanting to laugh every time.

It reminds me of Frank Spencer and Sodbury road.

There was a Titty Bottle Lane in the town I grew up in in Lancashir.e
