Today is the Grand National, as I am more Irish than English horse racing is in my blood, I love this race.
I only bet twice a year once on the Grand National and then Listowel races in September..
Are any of you having a punt?

Any Second Now and Snow Leopardess are two of my choice.

BlueBelle I meant threads in general. I agree that nobody should condone cruelty of any kind. I would prefer that horse racing didn't happen as well as other "sports" involving animals. They are being exploited to make some people rich.

Horse racing like greyhound racing is cruel. How many of these animals “disappear” when their usefulness is over or an injury is too severe for them to be treated.

BlueBelle Sat 09-Apr-22 16:12:16

I m glad we agree AGAA animals should never be exploited in a civilised culture

FindingNemo15 Sat 09-Apr-22 16:12:23

Never total cruelty would not even allow it on the TV in our house.

BlueBelle

I don’t agree AGA we should not all have different viewpoints on cruelty to animals or people We should all agree totally on that subject no wriggle room whatsoever

Golly Bluebelle, that’s a job and a half. Some people think eating meat is cruel, others think keeping pets is cruel. Some approve of fishing, some don’t. Should I be taking antibiotics against bacteria, or doesn’t the little bug have any rights? I’m not sure how you would propose any unanimity on this!

I don’t approve of the National, but I can’t resist having a look at the horses before the race. They are such beautiful creatures.

Blondiescot Sat 09-Apr-22 17:08:21

I hate it with a passion. I love horses and always have done. And as has been said, the horses who die (or are shot) after falling at the races are just the tip of the iceberg.
My view: You bet, they die...

No - we used to have a family sweepstake when my aunt organised it, but not really interested in a 'sport' that is deliberately beyond the capability of most of the contestants.

I agree that this 'spectacle' should be stopped.

Is everyone who is against racing a vegan or vegetarian?
No horse racing - no horses and so on
How humans interact with animals is very complex

Well I loved it. Well done Sam Waley-Cohen and Noble Yeats. I backed the second runner but sadly not each way! What a marvellous race.

Kim19 Sat 09-Apr-22 17:41:50

Well.......I lost my stake but SO happy about the circumstances of the winning jockey. What a retirement day!

Grandmaclampet Sat 09-Apr-22 17:43:17

No, its not for me.

merlotgran Sat 09-Apr-22 17:53:42

Drat....Second again! Never mind. It was an each way bet.

Jaxjacky Sat 09-Apr-22 17:55:42

What a result for the whole team.

Daisymae Sat 09-Apr-22 17:56:03

Never. Apparently only 2 horses have died this year at the event. So far. Not sure if it includs Elle Est Belle who died after a heart attack today. Hope you all enjoyed it.

Well done Sam Waley-Cohen and Noble Yeats. What a last ride for the jockey! I had an e/w bet on Santini who came 4th so have more than covered my stake.

Good for you, I should have done the same instead of betting to win. A friend told me many years ago that her grandfather, who would have been born in about 1896, always put a shilling on every single runner. He usually covered his stake and sometimes had a very good year.

That's awful Daisymae sad.

I wonder if they buy products tested on animals? Easy to sit in an ivory tower.

Grandmadinosaur Sat 09-Apr-22 18:31:36

Great story for the winning jockey. My 2 choices didn’t come anywhere.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 09-Apr-22 18:36:28

I’m not vegetarian (I would be if I lived alone) but I don’t condone cruelty to animals and try to buy products which haven’t been tested on animals.

Blondiescot Sat 09-Apr-22 18:46:16

It's simply not true to say that no horse racing would mean no horses. But can you imagine the outcry there would be if the same amount of jockeys died over the course of a year, for example?
So yes, go on - enjoy your winnings. Pity Elle Est Belle and Solwara One won't be enjoying the rest of their lives...

BlueBelle Sat 09-Apr-22 19:18:30

Yes fanny I don’t eat animals
