60th birthday party and 'modern' music

There are quite a few cover versions of old hits which you might like and younger people will like too. I can remember a few years ago my teenagers being thrilled with this new song, Behind Blue Eyes, and they were staggered when I started singing along to it when they played it to me. Of course, when I played them The Who's version, they hated it at the time but are more tolerant of it now they are grown up.

I’m 60+ and love Dua Lipa, Jess Glynn, Meghan Trainor and Pink but it’s not a proper party without an Abba Medley and Dexys Midnight Runners singing Come on Eileen!

Mid 70s to Mid 80s for me too, with classic Stones, Fleetwood Mac mixed in. I am just starting to sort out a mix on Spotify, keep hearing tracks I like and think 'Oh, I must add that!'. Some music crosses generations, some doesn't. My go to is the sound track from Saturday Night Fever.......makes the vacuum move faster in this house.

I don't dislike contemporary music, its just that I think it dosent have the same impact on me as the sounds that were around when I was growing up.....must be an age thing.

We've got the play list basically in 2 sections. Earlier on its more laid back while peeps get settled in and relaxed, then starts hitting the stuff that (I hope) peeps will want to dance to. Its around 4 hours long and amongst others The Doors, Marvin Gaye, Blues Brothers, Santana, Free, Bee Gees, Rolling Stones, KC and the Sunshine Band, Thin Lizzy (and Mud - anyone remember Tiger Feet??) get a name check, while some of the playlist isnt my own personal preference, I've gone for stuff that (I hope) has wider appeal and that people can have fun too.

DH and I were watching and playing along with The Hit List (?) on TV last weekend. We both agreed that any band name that contained the words "feat" or "vs" were way too modern for us!!

I have a playlist that has tracks from the 50's right up to current time (the 1975, 5 seconds of summer, Avici, MNEK etc). I love dance music and spent a lot of time in Discos in the late 70's/early 80's and still enjoy some current chart music. I'm waiting for Pink to your in the UK and will be getting tickets. I have a very varied taste in music but suppose if had to choose would be mid 70's to mid 80's for me.

I went to a 21st about 10 years ago and recognised very few tunes. I mean I keep reasonably up to date but these were really weird and obscure. Youngsters were enjoying and someone was trying to persuade me to dance. I foolishly said if they had Oops Upside Your Head I’d be down on the floor never dreaming for one minute …????

Got to have some Ed Sheeran - he's great! Also like Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga etc.

I went to an 18th Birthday party on Saturday and they were playing ABBA!

Never understood the enthusiasm for Abba. Found myself driving a mini-bus of teenagers from one side of Scotland to the other in the early 21st century. They insisted in playing ABBA all the way there...and all the way back....!

At 69, my husband is a DJ. He asks before the night for peoples taste in music, looks at the age of the crowd when it comes in and takes requests. He gives people what they want, not what he likes, a problem with some DJs

I will soon be 60 as well! late 60's, 70's and early 80's music for me! Of course we were teens in the 70's, and out at clubs in early 80's. Disco is not dead at my house!

I was at a wedding a few years ago when Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline came on. All of the younger generation knew all the words and started a circle dance holding hands. It was fun to see the 'kids' singing along to their parent's music.

But that music would have been popular when OP was very small. The music of her 'era' would be the seventies and early eighties - ABBA, Donna Summer, Adam and the Ants, Wham, Boy George, The Police etc
