The smell of weed from neighbouring properties is getting really bad, so bad that we can smell it in our home if we have doors or windows open.

Gagajo, my 72 year old friend has dementia. Smoking cannabis daily contributed to that. We all react differently to diet, alcohol and drugs.
GreenGran78, I hope the trial goes as well as possible for your son. Your experience confirms that people can react differently to a drug they’ve used with no,problems. By drugs, I mean prescription and street. I took an anti RA drug treatment for over a year, with great success. Without warning, I had a serious reaction. The consultant said it was well known but rare, I was one in ten thousand. Luckily I recovered. Prescription drugs aren’t free of risk but at least if we have a reaction, the doctors know the strength etc of our drug. None of that safety net with street drugs

I have clearly led a sheltered life. I don't know what cannabis smoke smells like. Is it unpleasant?

As a former cannabis smoker ( in the 70s) I can tell you it's quite a pleasant, but distinctive smell.
I haven't smelt the later variety but I believe it's a lot stronger and causes smokers to behave aggressively which good old weed never did. We just lounged around eating chocolate biscuits and listening to Pink Floyd or Santana☺️

I'm not defending the smoking of anything (non smoker myself) but responding to Iam64, the bloke I know that smokes it is 73, cycles regularly, goes hiking etc. He and his circle of friends/acquaintances were hippies in the 60s and never gave it up.

It's present at parties, as if the occasional hash cake.

Greengran78, what terrible stress for you all including your poor son. I hope his defence team can use the information in court regarding the components of the bad cannabis and also a psychiatrist for his defence too. Wishing you all good luck and the end of this nightmare for you and your son x

Susysue yes, he has a good legal team. My son was taken to hospital, where a taser barb, which had broken his finger and lodged in it, was removed. Unfortunately the police wouldn’t wait for the psychiatrist to assess him, and took him away after his treatment. Because of Covid restrictions we have only seen him once since August, and a psychiatrist was only allowed in to assess him in June. The prosecution have only arranged for another assessment, on their behalf, this week. The result will only be available a week before he goes to court. The first assessment was convinced that he couldn’t have attacked ‘with intent’. We hope that the second will agree, then things may change. However, as his defence say, how can anyone judge what he was like on the night in question? By the next morning he was back in his normal state of mind. We have seen all the statements, and most of them seem to back up that he was in a psychotic state. The fact that he was tasered four times bears this out. He is quite slim, and there were plenty of cops to hold him down.
On the face of it, he should be cleared. He is quite ready to admit to possessing cannabis, and harming me ‘without intent’, though the only injuries I actually received were defence wounds from trying to grab the knife.
We feel that the prosecution have been deliberately obstructive. Even a cannabis sample, to be tested for strength and impurities, was only handed over after many requests, and very late in the proceedings.
We are hoping for the best, but bracing ourselves for a bad result., just in case. Who knows what a jury will think of a man attacking his elderly mother?

Although I've never spent time with anyone that smokes weed I do know what it smells like. I actually quite like the smell and prefer it to normal cigarette smoke which is awful but not sure I would want to smell it all the time. Not much help with your problem though OP ?

My neighbour in the next flat to me smokes weed all day. My back door is opposite hers. One day last summer I had the windows open and my whole flat smelt of it. She used to be up until 2/3am each morning with her boyfriend and others smoking at the back door and making a noise. Thankfully it must be over with her bf but you can smell weed when you walk past her flat. She can smoke whatever she likes but I don’t like the smell and I don’t see why I should have to smell it as well. She won’t smoke inside I don’t think because she’s in a rented flat.

Is it a rental property? If Social Housing then you could report it to whoever is the owner. Cannabis, although a 'minor' drug in the great scheme of things, is still illegal and it's not great subjecting children to it, let alone neighbours.

Nutty lady, I really feel for you as I do for greengran78. What a horrible situation you are both in and greengran78's story shows the danger of the strains of hash compared to many years ago. Nutty lady, I would not make your views known to this neighbour but contact your community police officer (don't phone 101 as they then may come out to your house ) but go to the local police station and ask to speak to them. The fact that there are children living with her who may or may not be being looked after properly is absolutely relevant to the police and needs investigating. I cannot understand how some people on here are suggesting it's not an issue. If she is stoned out of her head on a daily basis, there is no way that these poor kids are being looked after properly, also a lot of people coming and going may not be safe for these kids either. She sounds like a completely irresponsible adult and a nightmare to be living next to. As others have suggested, try and find out the house situation eg tenant, housing association, private landlord etc before going to police. Also your local environmental council debt might be of help re noise, smell etc. Good luck. This is not going to go away as long as she is living beside you. Greengran78, I really am so saddened to read your story. Has he got a really good lawyer, have you spoken to them. Surely if this has been a one off occasion, serious though it was, there should be enough mitigating circumstances for him to be assessed by a psychiatrist and deemed what is mental state is and whether it was the affect of a bad stash which made him react in this out of the ordinary for him. Poor you and poor him if this was the case and yet nobody seems to be taking this into account. Have you spoken to your local mp too?? Good luck to you all for good resolutions x

We have recently had a lad come a short walk from his home to stand near our home where he can’t be seen by the owner of his house. He smokes weed, the smell is awful but the worst is that he coughs and spits huge globs of phlegm onto the footpaths we all have to walk on, it makes me feel quite sick. I am considering speaking to the owner of the house who, by the way, keeps his property very clean. We’ve lived here for over 43 years, they haven’t lived here that long. My Mum died of COVID last year and this has made me much more upset by germs than I would normally be. I know there isn’t much I can do but seeing this post made me want to say something about my situation.

Be careful with reporting to a private landlord as it may result in a young family being made homeless! Sadly landlords can evict fairly easily using a section 21 notice which has no comeback and I am sure thats not what you intend.

I smoked a couple of times as a student in the 70's and I find the smell brings back memories of happy times. However I wouldn't want to be smelling it all the time. Unfortunately reporting neighbours carries its own risks. I'm glad none of my neighbours indulge as far as I'm aware.

I too find the smell of ordinary cigarettes far more unpleasant. One of my neighbours regularly goes outdoors for an ordinary cigarette so presumably his wife forbids it in the house. I've often chatted to him while he's out for a smoke while I don't think I've ever seen his wife!

Our houses are all detached and I rarely notice any smells from neighbouring properties, but having just spent a few weeks working on the recent census, knocking on doors, I've been to some areas where the smells from properties are very strong - cooking, cigarette smoke and weed. It makes me grateful that I live where I do!

Some of you say that cannabis is fairly harmless. My son used to smoke it occasionally, to relieve the stress from his job and help him to sleep.
Last August, after a 3 month break, he bought a small quantity from a new supplier. After smoking one joint he came downstairs to me in a delusional state, saying that he was very sorry, but he was the Devil, and had to kill me. He got a carving knife from the kitchen. I grabbed his wrist and attempted to take it from him, cutting my hand quite badly in the process. Luckily I managed to persuade him to go upstairs, and he didn’t actually stab me. I escaped to a neighbour’s house, and the police and ambulance came. They tasered him four times before containing him.
He is dreadfully remorseful about what happened. He has been on remand in prison since it happened, in his cell 23/7 because of Covid restrictions, and is being charged with wounding with intent to kill. Even though numerous people say that his character is non-aggressive, and he is a respectable member of society, and I am firmly stating that he was psychotic at the time, the CPS refuse to reduce the charge. He goes to court soon. Although we are sure that he should be found not guilty of the charge, we know how justice can go awry, and he could be facing some years in prison. It has been a very tough 9 months for us all.
Cannabis can most definitely harm you, and your family and friends!

I like the smell of weed its more pleasant than cigarette smoke which I find disgusting, plus it takes me back to the days of hash cakes, bongs and pipes of my hippy days!
Just ask if they’ll close the windows!

First things first. Introduce yourself to your new neighbour if you haven't already done so.

Then in a few days' time mention that you find the smoke from their place difficult to cope with, as you or DH are allergic to it.

Ask if they could keep the windows shut while they smoke, or smoke at the side of the house away from your place.

If you report her to whoever the relevant authority is, she is entitled to ask who reported her. Knowing that you did so will not make her a nicer neighbour, so go carefully here.

Obviously, if you suspect she is selling the stuff then it is a rather different matter. Selling or growing it is illegal, not sure that smoking it in your own home is, though.

What does it smell like? I wish you could come and take a walk round with me - I smell it all the time!

Anti social behaviour team; environmental health , MP as there was talk about changing the law to make it legal & the increase that would have on making lives totally miserable for neighbours. GP & a complaint at surgery as it was affecting health big style as suffering effects of second hand skunk smoke literally felt not control of car when driving & constant interrupted nights sleep. Had previously been told to close windows by police & GP especially in a hot summers days & then whole house stank .
You may have more joy from your MP or GP if they are understanding & listen, wishing you the best of luck

I would worry about the kids being in the house if the smell is so strong. Adults have the choice to do it or not, but the wee ones being there don't. I'd contact the police and ask their advice.
