... and planning to be financially independent.

Was it MerylStreep I always understood that was the action of the late sainted Queen mum (possibly after a few to many gins)

hollysteers Sat 11-Jan-20 12:44:54

anniebach, Sarah Ferguson did not keep quiet at all.
I read her tell all book.

MerylStreep Sat 11-Jan-20 12:44:36

trisha
I doubt very much that Charles spoke to his father Re marrying Camilla, considering it was Phillip who pushed Charles into marrying Diana.

vegansrock Sat 11-Jan-20 12:44:22

How dare this upstart actress who we have been telling to sod off for the past 3 years go and sod off! Taking taxpayers money unlike the rest of the royals who cost us nothing . ( thanks to Mark Steele).
Remember how much hate directed at Camilla, Fergie, Slagging off of Diana for giving interviews, slagging of Kate for not being proper aristocracy - the RF is just one big soap opera for the plebs. And stuff for the papers. Proof is in this thread.

SirChenjin Sat 11-Jan-20 12:44:20

Absolutely trisher - I don’t think anyone on here is saying that they shouldn’t go if life within the confines of the RF isn’t for them. If that’s what they want to do then good luck to them and I hope they have a long and happy life together, free from the shackles of a royal life that makes them feel like they’re existing, not living hmm.

That’s not what they’re doing though. They’ve planned this move for many months, they’ve ignored protocol and snubbed his family but they still want the Royal name and the prestige and cachet that goes with it in order line their pockets from another continent. If the royal institution is so bad then it’s time for them to step away from it completely - and that means everything that goes with it, not just the boring, constraining bits.

wicklowwinnie Sat 11-Jan-20 12:38:59

I agree with you trisher, I think it's fairly obvious why they are leaving. They are looking ahead to what the future holds.!!!!

Summerlove Sat 11-Jan-20 12:35:26

tickingbird, you’re misinterpreting what I’m saying, and that’s fine.

It’s up to us individually to take care of ourselves. It’s not someone else’s responsibility to make sure we are happy.

Mental health is not an illness. Mental illness is. We all must take care of our own mental health. We don’t all have mental illness.

I’ve not said if the Sussexes were right or wrong. In fact, I’ve said more that once they could have done this better.

What I do think, is that they have had a rough time in the papers (rougher than others? I don’t know). Meghan has been the target of multiple racial micro aggressions, and many refuse to see it, and feel they are being painted as racists for not liking her. There are racist micro aggressions in the paper. Most people who dislike her are Not racist. Those two things are both true. But the minimisation of the racism has been shocking.

I understand why they’d want out. She wasn’t properly prepared. He should have prepared her more. However, he’s always come across as spoiled. His family has had a large hand in that. He’s been used by the media and public for years.

All I really hope?

I hope they find happiness and peace. I hope his family will let him grow.

trisher Sat 11-Jan-20 12:30:14

How on earth do people know what the RF have said or done? As far as Philip advising against the marriage didn't he do much the same with Charles and Camilla originally? And look what that caused! Personally I think they are best as far away as possible from the mixed up, maladjusted, awkward gang that comprise the RF.

tickingbird Sat 11-Jan-20 12:21:35

Summerlove Mental health isn’t a responsibility it’s an illness!

Charleygirl5 Sat 11-Jan-20 12:20:52

MawB I agree and even occasionally now there are snide remarks made about her air stewardess days. Luckily they rose above it and ignored the really vile remarks.

As others have said, William seemed to enjoy visiting what was deemed as a "normal" family- no servants hovering in the background but love and laughter in abundance.

tickingbird Sat 11-Jan-20 12:19:44

Also Summerlove if you believe in personal responsibility for one’s mental health why are there laws in place now to protect people from coercive and manipulative behaviour?

Fact is you think they’ve done nothing wrong, haven’t taken the rest of the RF for a ride and have every right to insult the Queen. By all accounts the Queen - The Firm - whatever you want to call it have bent over backwards to accommodate them and their demands but it still wan’t enough. The least they could have was behave, publicly at least, in an appropriate manner.

Summerlove Sat 11-Jan-20 12:18:17

By all accounts the Queen asked them to delay the announcement and they went ahead anyway and then M buggered off.

Literally exactly “put up and shut up until I’m ready for you to do what I want”.

Again, The Sussexes should/could have done this announcement better. But they are doing what they feel is best.

His Grandmothers mental health isn’t his responsibility. It’s Hers.

Chestnut Sat 11-Jan-20 12:08:49

Summerlove: I just don’t feel it’s Harry’s job to put up and shut up to make his grandmother feel better.
But respect for the Queen/his grandmother has not been shown. No-one expects him to put up with an unhappy situation and live his life just to keep the Queen happy, but this was not done in a respectful way.

tickingbird Sat 11-Jan-20 12:07:37

Hang on Summerlove nobody is suggesting Harry should have shut up and put up. By all accounts the Queen asked them to delay the announcement and they went ahead anyway and then M buggered off.

I don’t have a problem with them leaving but there has been a very public ‘finger’ to the Queen. Showing his grandmother some respect isn’t about not taking personal responsibility and your comment about me expecting them to take personal responsibility but not others makes no sense and I don’t know what/whom you’re referring to.

Summerlove Sat 11-Jan-20 11:54:36

Daisyboots, I feel for the Queen as well, I didn’t say I didn’t.

I just don’t feel it’s Harry’s job to put up and shut up to make his grandmother feel better. Same as in any family.

If expecting personal responsibility (Which is what most posters here seem to want from the Sussexes), makes me a “nasty person”, then I’ll accept that. However, maybe look at why you expect it from them, but not others.

Just a thought.

ladymuck Sat 11-Jan-20 11:54:15

I understand that Prince Philip advised Harry against the marriage, as did Prince William.
I'm wondering now why the queen gave her permission. Is she regretting that decision?

Daisyboots Sat 11-Jan-20 11:50:50

Summerlove you are a nasty person to say that about the Queen. She is 93 and certainly doesn't need the behaviour of an entitled feeling grandson and wife causing all these problems. I myself said I wondered about Harry's mental health being left here on his own to deal with everything so there is every reason to feel sorry for the Queen too.

Summerlove Sat 11-Jan-20 11:50:01

tickingbird

I sound nasty because I don’t think it’s my children’s and grandchildren’s jobs to keep me happy? Because I believe in personal responsibility for my mental health?

That has nothing to do about not caring for older relatives.

I’ve not once said, here or elsewhere that this was handled well.

I just think the handwringing about the Queen is misplaced, and I find it interesting that mental health of a younger generation seems as though it should take second place behind the older generation. “Forget your problems, it’s your job to fake it for granny, it will be your turn soon enough”. It breeds toxicity.

SirChenjin Sat 11-Jan-20 11:48:46

I’m sure Harry will share his money with her Meryl - I’m not worried their current joint bank balance but if they want more money then they need to earn it themselves, and that means without hand outs from an institution they appear to want to shun for the most part.

MerylStreep Sat 11-Jan-20 11:41:45

SerChenJin
Megan is not independently wealthy
Her wealth is estimated at $5 million. Yes, this is a lot of money if one were to lead an 'ordinary' life.
But with the lifestyle she's had a glimpse into ( and wants to maintain) 5mil won't go far.

JenniferEccles Sat 11-Jan-20 11:39:21

The ring incident underlines the oft quoted comment from Harry re. his wife - “what Meghan wants Meghan gets “

There were signs from the early days but most people were prepared to give her a chance.

MawB Sat 11-Jan-20 11:33:04

There has been much reference to the culpability of the press and social media harassment of Meghan for whatever reason, so I decided to have a search of some of the comments about Kate and Carole Middleton before and around the time of the wedding. (DM online seemed to feature a lot)
I was shocked!
They are vicious, evil, toxic and frankly appalling
It is to the Middleton family’s credit , and Prince William, I think that they rose above that, but it must have been incredibly hurtful at the time. People were just willing the marriage to fail and for Carole Middleton, typified as the archetypical pushy mum, to get her “come uppance”
It is sad that Harry and Meghan (the latter whom I perceive as rather more worldly wise than Kate was 8 years ago,) could not handle that and rise above it.

Calendargirl Sat 11-Jan-20 11:23:54

Re rings. I didn’t think it was a good idea for William to give Catherine his mum’s ring for their engagement, seemed like a bad omen to me as the marriage had been so unhappy. Different if had been just as a dress ring.
However, he didn’t consult me! It gives me pleasure that hopefully, my fears were totally unfounded, and Catherine always wears said ring with pride and pleasure I’m sure.

tickingbird Sat 11-Jan-20 11:23:01

Summerlove you sound particularly nasty. Maybe you don’t give a fig for your elderly relatives but most of us do. Regardless of H &M’s decision to leave, it can’t denied it's been badly handled and, yes, they should have taken the Queen’s feelings into account, both as the Monarch and as a wise, very elderly lady.

The more I hear of this story the more I dislike this Meghan woman. She didn’t mind Britain so much before the ring was on her finger.

chris8888 Sat 11-Jan-20 11:09:53

Seems a shame and although the royal family paid for the wedding the country paid for the security. Hopefully they find a new role for themselves that isn`t just about endorsing products.
