All she asked was do people mind workmen using their loo especially if they don't wash their hands and flush. And its very easy to hear if someone has done so.

We are all different and fussy in our own ways.
Yes I mind people using my loo but accept it when necessary. I wouldn't give lunch money or sandwiches but I wouldn't ridicule someone who does. Some GNetters need to grow up and learn manners.
And Maw we can't all have a cloakroom.

Callistemon exactly. We have lived in our current hme for over 20 years. Our heating has been in the hands of a firm of heating and plumbing contractors whose premises are coupel of hundred yards from the house for all that time. They cannot afford to have anything untoward happen when their staff are in the house. The same with the electrician.

How demeaning of people to automatically assume that anyone working in their house is of a lower social class with commensurately lower standards than yours and less honest. Yes, disasters will happen and I have seen contractors off my premises before, but once you know them and the company, it is an exceptionally rare occurrance for anything to go wrong.

I do chatbriefly to workmen when I provide a mid morning and mid afternoon drink, but not for more than a few sentences, they usually take their drink and retreat back to their work clutching the mug.

I'm actually quite staggered by this post. Do you let guests use your toilet? Then why should a workman be any different? They're not some sub-class of human being - they're just like the rest of us, FGS!

Blondiescot Are you referring to my post? If so, you have misread it. I have absolutely no problem with anyone in my house for any reason using the facilities and they are free to use whichever one is most convenient.

Perhaps you should read back a couple of pages and you will then realise my post was part of an ongoing conversation with people who treat workmen in their home like slugs.

FFS I am far from unique in having a downstairs loo! Aka “cloakroom”

Our painter/decorator is much posher than us.
And she has a Masters degree.
And our plumber is definitely much richer than us

There was no suggestion of subclass. Just someone who doesn't like strangers in her loo.

Cloakrooms are now compulsory in all new properties and have been for 30 or 40 years. Now they have to be wheelchair accessible

It’s the practice around these rural parts that if the customer requires, a bright blue tardis is placed outside, usually somewhere extremely visible!! In my experience most workers just don’t want the trouble of boots off, mind the white towel, don’t use too much paper and prefer the tardis!

One of the very good reasons for having a cloakroom (even in a flat) so that the situation dies not arise.
I'm sure we are all aware of the benefits.

I have better things to do than look for sticks to beat people.

Maggiemaybe, we subscribe to If it's yellow, let it mellow, If it's brown, flush it down, and I'm not embarrassed to admit it. We are on a water meter and try to save water as much as possible.
My DH told me once that he noticed a friend of his had not washed his hands and said "Didn't your mother teach you to wash your hands after using the toilet?" to which he replied, "No, but she did teach me not to pee on my hands". Since urine is sterile when it leaves the body I sometimes wonder whether he had the right attitude, although I do always wash mine. I don't leave the tap running though.
