Tomorrow I am having a new boiler installed.
When the company director (that's who I was told to expect) called last week to inspect and quote, he asked to use the loo.
I have just the one bathroom and dislike workmen using it but said yes anyway.
He was in there for a long peeeee and neither flushed nor used the basin and hand towel.
Tomorrow I'll give them lunch money (as I would anyway) and ask the men to use the hotel or a cafe in town which is a short walk away.
I don't like the idea of them not washing hands and touching countertops, handles and visible kitchen equipment but they tend to put tools and work stuff on the floor then on kitchen work surfaces even though the boiler is in a small utility room.
Do those of you with just one loo, mind workmen or others not in your family or friends circle, using those facilities?

Auntieflo Mon 18-Nov-19 10:53:48

Gabriella, are you sure that the CD didn't suss out your property, whilst purporting to use the loo?

You know the sort of thing.
2 policemen come in, one stays with you, the other wants to use the facilities confused, but has a good root around , seeing what he can find.
Maybe the poetry writers can add that to the Betjeman type verse?

*I usually give a packet of sandwiches and crisps plus water to Yodel or Hermes drivers*???

Nannan2 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:09:51

Yes,the company director could already be a 'germ-a- phobe,he might not have wanted to touch other peoples loo handles/taps,he maybe uses hand gel? My son has ocd& he does wash hands(constantly) but is wary of facilities in other places than home.he carries antibac wipes in his car.

Oh my goodness ReadyMeals I am certain no one would be able to top your tale.

How ghastly.

Nannan2 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:13:06

What im wondering is- do you have the sarnies for couriers already made/ pre-wrapped ready when you know youre due a delivery/ collection? Or do you always have some in ready for a 'surprise delivery'?.....gringrin

You might say that, I couldn’t possibly comment! wink

GrammaH Mon 18-Nov-19 11:15:20

I'm slightly concerned by the perception of some that workmen are of a different species to other people. Is this based on actual past experience I wonder?

TrendyNannie6 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:16:14

Wow giving food n drink to Hermes or yodel. No I don’t do that ever, mine are gone down our drive in 10 seconds flat, and yes obviously I would let a workman/me. Go to the toilet, I don’t like strangers using the toilet but would never refuse, I certainly wouldn’t give them lunch money what’s that all about, if I did that I think they’d be telling their mates and more would arrive if they thought they would get money, seriously no I’ve never known anyone to give workmen lunch money, ours generally bring their own and eat it in their van, or go to the local costa, as for someone using toilet and not flushing that’s vile

TrendyNannie6 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:16:47

Workman /men

Well, a one man job. He turned up 65 minutes late and the mess...
Oh...don't talk about it. Kit hen with tools spread out all over the place, front door wide open making the place freezing.
Holy mess out on the porch and drive from extracting the condenser out of the outside wall.
I HATE mess
Told him loo was 'temporarily unavailable and he was ok with that. I decided not to give him lunch money as the mess is unbelievable. angryangry

Nannan2 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:20:13

Vile? Thats a bit harsh...

Nannan2 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:24:05

Well GabriellaG,that goes to prove,'no good deed goes unpunished'- nxt time,No sarnies,& definitely NO lunch money.?

GabriellaG54 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:24:10

No, it's not a wind up. I really do give couriers a bit of lunch to eat on the go as they usually have no time to stop.
Mine are excellent and have always put parcels in the safe place, nothing damaged and they always knock and say 'You're welcome' when I thank them.
Look after them and they look after you. That's my motto.

I have no objection at all if anyone working here uses the loo. That must be preferable to being on the receiving end of a sudden shower like ReadyMeals!

I find that people generally remove their shoes/boots without being asked but, if they don't, then I ask them to do so.

I always offer tea and coffee but we rarely have cake or biscuits in the house so nothing else (except for our electrician who's a family friend and always gets a bacon buttie for breakfast when he arrives).

varian Mon 18-Nov-19 11:28:38

It's hard to believe that the OP who only has one loo could possibly be the same incredibly wealthy and successful poster who boasted about giving £50,000 to the Brexit company. It would cost a lot less to install a second loo.

Riggie Mon 18-Nov-19 11:29:26

We have workmen in next week. There will be tea and coffee and I might get some biscuits. Husband will be in as I plan to take ds out as heating and water are likely to be off, so theyll be lucky to get a drink made!!

GabriellaG54 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:30:35

The sarnies are always vegan or veggie as the drivers are Muslim. It's always the same men. I don't give anything with meat or meat flavouring.

SirChenjin Mon 18-Nov-19 11:35:02

I think you should do a little bit of reading into the Muslim faith and veganism/vegetarianism grin

Madmaggie Mon 18-Nov-19 11:35:59

Always offer tea/coffee/cold drinks plus biccies to workmen. I was brought up to as my dad was a brickie and knew how much it was appreciated. He always took his 'baggin' (sandwiches) and a billy containing loose tea & sugar so all he required was boiling water. I too have noticed a trend to work on through lunch to get jobs completed when they're self employed. Sign of the economy. My recent tradesman even brought his own kettle but asked to keep his carton of milk in the fridge! Says he provides his own as he can never be certain he'll be offered. I'm grateful that we now have another loo & designate that for their use. Seems to work. I never provide lunch though.

MawB Mon 18-Nov-19 11:36:03

But do you make them specially or do you keep a supply on the off chance? My couriers usually give a 2 hour window the day before.
And what about Ramadan?
Frankly, why and also why the “lunch money” for workmen. That seems extraordinarily patronising.

GabriellaG54 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:36:36

I did not ever say that I gave such a stupid amount to the 'Brexit company'. I did pay £20 to 'join'.
Don't make things up.
If you had read any previous posts you'd know that I rent the flat. It is not mine.
I own a house in Virginia Water and it is let by me to a family.
It was my marital home and was too big for me after I divorced my then husband.
Anything else you want to make up.. ?

whywhywhy Mon 18-Nov-19 11:39:23

You cannot expect people to work and not need the loo! If you find that they have not flushed or suspect that they have not washed their hands then say something - it is your house and home. I wouldnt give them their dinner money though. Workmen usually turn up with their own food and sometimes sit in their van to eat. I would just want them to get the job done and offer them the use of both the toilet and the kitchen table for their lunch but maybe I am wrong.

GabriellaG54 Mon 18-Nov-19 11:40:16

Waitrose is a 5 minute jog away and Yodel and Hermes both have an app which shows you how many stops the driver has before he delivers to me so I have plenty of time to shop.
I'm well aware of Ramadan...thank you.
