Margs , I was taught your friends way reason being we did not have carpet used a broom to sweep floors raised dust so dusted after.

I experienced an unexpected fall a couple of days ago. Walking my little dog down my road (a small, single track lane in the countryside) I was happily gazing over the fields at the cows grazing when next minute I was flying in slow motion towards the ground! I lay there quite stunned and shaken and turned to see a speeding cyclist coming round the bend, straight towards me - all I could do was call out ‘don’t run me over’ and wave my bleeding hands at him. I think he was almost as shocked as me as he screeched his brakes on and swerved to avoid running into me! We expect potholes in the road to be a problem for motorists but not pedestrians! On reporting said pothole to the local road authority I was told only potholes with a depth of 50mm in the road could be repaired. Potholes on pavements would be repaired if of a depth of 25mm or more. Even though there is no pavement to walk on, the road measurement applies! Wonder if anybody would notice if someone took a little trowel to increase the depth by 3mm?!?!?

I invested in a long extendable cleaning brush thingy which reaches to top of conservatory roof. It is mainly for getting the cobwebs down & works very well. I do stand on steps to clean the surrounds though but I am still quite nimble & I do try & do it when there is someone else around- just in case.

Whenever I do chores that I don’t like (cleaning) I talk as I do it as if I was giving instructions on a TV channel. Daft I know, but somehow it makes it a little (not a lot) more pleasurable.

I would never go up a ladder or clean a ceiling. There's enough to do at floor level.

Angelic I am more of a splat faller than a slow motion one. One second I am upright and the next flat on the ground unable to get up. I had two bad falls in the summer so now I dont walk anywhere without wearing shoes or slippers.

I actually enjoy cleaning hoovering is my fave by far, since got the brilliant shark hoover. I tend to have my music on loud singing away, but I will say if I’m in a mood or having a bad day I put the Rolling Stones 19th nervous breakdown on and turn it up , it never fails to make me feel better, lol by the way we do live in a detached house not near neighbours

Having broken a bone for the first time in my life I am now wary of doing it again, so your antics, thisisnotme, made me go cold. Please take care - get a long handled cleaning gadget, get your OH to clean, get a window cleaner to do the inside of the conservatory but PLEASE don't carry on chancing a broken bone yourself. I healed well and quickly but I don't want that inconvenience again.

I don't climb steps/ladders, housework is something that gets done when the mood takes me

My kitchen & bathroom are clean, clothes are clean so am I ,I'm not a total slut

Chances of me falling of steps cleaning my non-existant conservatory are zero, living alone I take no chances

Thinking about the cleaning issue - why on earth clean the ceiling of a conservatory? We have one and only clean the floor. I hate cleaning.
Even my husband, who is a cleaning fanatic, wouldn't see the need to do that.

Have you thought about using a long handled feather duster.

I use one on my very steep stairwell.

I’m also very careful if using a step ladder. I certainly wouldn’t be jigging around to music at the same time.

What is this "cleaning" malarky. Sounds too dangerous for me.

I was taught to Hoover first then dust as small particles are blown out of the vac.
However if using a non electric carpet sweeper (Ewbank in our case) you dust first then use mechanical carpet sweeper as it doesn’t blow out dust!

thisisnotme - you have been very lucky not to be badly hurt after falling off a stepladder. A fall can be very serious indeed if you land wrongly, whether down the stairs or in the street or whatever. We all need to take care as we get older, so please look after yourselves everyone.

I have an extendable ceiling brush. Closed it is roughly the size of a broom, extended it is twice as long. Our bedroom is in the eaves of our house and the ceiling is around 10 - 11 feet in the centre, 5 foot at window level. I can clean the peak of the room with both feet firmly on the floor.

Surely you would dust and vacuum at the same time- isn't that what the little round brush attachment is for?

I always start the rare event of a house clean in upstairs rooms and work down. No idea why

We have a couple or more of resident spiders who get busy making lovely webs overnight.
I am the meanie who takes them down again (well, it keeps them in a job).

‘Taught to clean and dust’ don’t you just do it if and when you see anything getting a bit overwhelmed
I have a great bit of kit it’s an unused fishing rod gets any cobwebs down easily

When I want to get the cleaning over quickly I don't wear my reading glasses But when the likes of my Super Houseproud (but otherwise very nice) sister-in-law is coming .... on go the bins .

Callestimon - I love spiders, as I've said before.
But sadly we don't seem to see them here in NE England, as we did in SW France.
