Showering

I recently had a shower installed and asked for tips. I expected to be laughed at but people were helpful and now I have another query.
I am hating cleaning the shower cubicle. It’s even worse than cleaning the bath. My water is very hard so I’m giving the inside a quick wipe when I get out then cleaning thoroughly once a week, using dilute vinegar.
It feels like hard work and when it’s all clean and shiny I’m reluctant to shower and splash the evil hard water all over it again.
Have I got this advanced technology right?

Go sideways
I have curved glass x

Yes we have a curtain but we still use a wiper thing on the tiled wall where the water splashes..Do it overtime have a shower and even trained Mr B to it.

we recently had a shower installed with the so called protective glass it still gets mucky, I shall get a squeegee thanks for the comments

now what is the best way to keep the drain clear!

We also have very hard water so I do what most of you do.
Wipe with wiper blade, sideways on the curves.
Every so often I use white vinegar on a damp cloth. Seems to work. I do try not to use any bought chemical products.
I did buy a daily shower spray about 3 years ago. It’s still half full.

I always shower after my husband.
He never wipes after use!

We’ve got one of those little wiper blade things. A whisk over with that before I get out of the shower and then a quick wipe over with a towel to take of the bits I’ve missed.www.lakeland.co.uk/24842/OXO-Good-Grips-Wiper-Blade-Squeegee. (Garages sell them cheaper!)

I do have some of that shower spray stuff but it doesn’t work too well as we have hard water.

Another vote for Method daily shower....it’s really effective and soooo easy.

Years ago, the man who installed our shower advised us to not to use "bought" daily-spray. (Which he said can damage tiling - look at the small print!) Instead he advised using a spray-bottle filled with water and a good squirt of washing-up liquid. (Shake the bottle well to mix it up, when you fill it.) We've found that this is good (and cheap!) for daily use. For a "big" clean I use micro cloths and a helpful brush such as this:

when I am actually in the shower...

MissAdventure As we share the same water supply I can vouch for Method, it can be pricey but often on special offer and a little goes a long way.

Also Co-Op have an eco-friendly range which is good.

I have never in my entire life washed a shower!!!

tanith Fri 18-Oct-19 09:44:11

Just to clarify I am referring to any glass panels, of course usual cleaning of shower tray, drain etc applies ?

We have a small shower with curtains on 3 sides, 4th side wall. It's a 'wet room''. It's not very powerful and the curtains don't seem to get wet, so only the lower wall needs cleaning.
That's fine for us, I used to dread cleaning our last shower, I always seemed to get wet when rinsing off the cleaning fluid.

Shropshirelass Fri 18-Oct-19 08:48:23

If you polish the tiles with car polish it makes cleaning much easier.

tanith Fri 18-Oct-19 08:42:39

I just want to agree with NanaMacGeek if you use a squeegee straight away, no water no limescale then there’s no need for all the cleaning rituals.

Missfoodlove Fri 18-Oct-19 08:35:45

Vileda Magic. After cleaning spray this sparingly and polish.
Like magic it repels the water and last a week?

BlueSapphire Fri 18-Oct-19 08:09:30

I do the same as DoraMarr; clean one wall each day while I'm actually in the shower, and then rinse off. It doesn't seem so much of a big job then. I use a limescale remover which works well. About once a week I take the plug/drain thingy out, give it a good scrub with an old toothbrush and soak the plastic bits in diluted bleach to remove any mould. I sometimes polish the glass with a microfibre cloth.

We have a walk in shower - best thing no rickety sliding doors of a cubicle. Also we got a water softener fitted - no more limescale and lots of suds.

Willow500 Fri 18-Oct-19 06:40:59

I use a variety of methods to keep the shower doors clean. A quick spritz with Aldi's shower cleaner then either the blade (Merlotgran we have a curved one for curved doors - think it came from Lakeland) or the window vac. I also bought a powered brush which I use periodically on both the doors and the tiles in the main bathroom which is great. I have finally managed to persuade my husband to spray it down each time he's in there but he doesn't use the blade hmm

Ginny42 Fri 18-Oct-19 05:33:13

I'd rather clean the glass than go back to a shower curtain which billowed out and stuck to me whilst showering. I use Method spray each day on whole area and clean once a week with washing-up liquid and warm water followed by window cleaning spray and an e-cloth. I like the sound of the Karcher window vac though, so will investigate.

grannysyb Fri 18-Oct-19 04:36:12

We have a shower in a very small bathroom. Despite opening windows and squeegeeing the shower regularly, it seemed to attract a lot of mould. I had it professionally cleaned and now use a Karcher window vac after each shower, and then wipe down with e cloth.

MissAdventure Fri 18-Oct-19 00:09:22

Ah, thank you.
I shall get some then. smile

NotSpaghetti Fri 18-Oct-19 00:01:08

merlotgran - sideways!
It goes round the curve fine that way.

MissAdventure - don’t know if it’s the best but it does work for me. It at least “delays” any build up and is more environmentally friendly than most.

NanaMacGeek Thu 17-Oct-19 23:50:03

Like others, I take the water off the tiles and door with a squeegee before I get out of the shower (Lakeland make one for showers), then use an e-cloth to wipe it all over. That's all I ever do, apart from using drain unblocker very occasionally. The shower been used most days for 6 years (since it was installed). It still looks shiny.

It's easier to clean the shower as soon as it has been used. The limescale doesn't get a chance to build up because hard water isn't left on the surface (which allows the calcium carbonate to crystallise out as the surface of the glass and tiles dries). It helps if the shower room is well ventilated too.

Maggiemaybe Thu 17-Oct-19 23:45:23

Shower curtain here too. It just goes in the wash whenever I temember.

Hetty58 Thu 17-Oct-19 23:31:42

Yes, so much easier to sling the curtain in the wash! My daughter has moved into a house where the water is very hard. Limescale everywhere! She's saving up for a water softener - another 'essential' for my next place too!

BlueBelle Thu 17-Oct-19 23:11:07

Sometimes less is better ?
