Pre Xmas De-cluttering Pledge support requested

I am today making a pledge to throw something I don't want or need away or give to charity every single day from today until Xmas Day. I know I hoard too many thing.

Yesterday I threw away 26 folders of degree notes and teaching file notes. I have been retired two years now so do not need them anymore.

Today I have been looking in my wardrobe and found a blu ray player box that has been there for 3 years. I know it is shameful.

Will anyone join me in a pre Xmas de-clutter and try to throw something away, even if something small every day?

I've now sorted through and shredded lots of old paperwork, with a glass of wine in hand. Remembering a time not so long ago, when I was out every Friday !! Those were the days, but heigh-ho, thanks for the inspiration smile I am now determined to declutter !!

I’m afraid I’ve been hopeless recently, but am planning on starting again tomorrow

I'm late to this thread but as of today will participate. This is a necessity as we have sold our house so need to cull 39 years of "stuff" before moving.

I've been rather lax, but I have been busy with work, and I can't really turn up at peoples homes with bags of toot to take to charity on my way home. (Hence they're piled up in my front room)

@newnanny Great idea ! We are a nation of hoarders, I for one am totally guilty, “I’ll save it just in case”, so right now under my stairs I have a box of electrical chargers - just in case!, two large swimming pool floats, - just in case!, a snow shovel - just in case!, a plethora of completely out of date, never looked at again mismatched items tat would be left behind at a junk sale - just in case! I’m with you, give it away free to someone who wants it it will never be missed. I did this recently, I posted all the things I was giving away on my local town Facebook page; books, wallpaper paste and brushes, grandchildren’s shoes etc and people came to pick them up it was so interesting but....you have to have a rule, 48 hours up online for free collection or else it’s going to charity shop.

Bussy Fri 22-Nov-19 22:38:12

Misadventure Some charity shops will collect items I am nearly sure the British Heart Foundation does

MissAdventure Fri 22-Nov-19 23:51:40

It's only 4 carrier bags of books and bits and bobs, bussy.
I'm not sure they'd come out for that?

Perhaps I might feel like taking them down myself, tomorrow?

I think I'm a bit under the weather, now I come to think of it.

I've listed one thing on eBay.
Not much, I know, but I have high hopes for it.

I also bought a plant I didn't need yesterday.

This "more out than is bought in" plan is proving tricky. blush

Took the 2 black bags, I sorted yesterday, to Oxfam today and got 2 more sorted for Monday smile

Bussy Sat 23-Nov-19 21:40:25

You could give them a phone MissAdventure especially if you are feeling under the weather and don’t feel like going to the shops, they actually give you their own bags and you can gather items for them....but health comes first don’t put yourself under pressure if you are under the weather

A couple of items of clothing and 4 country music CDs added to the bags of stuff going to charity shop on Monday.

We have 4 charity shops on our doorstep so I have absolutely no excuse for hoarding clutter so why do I?
Possibly psychological attachments etc.
DH was shouting about a missing book. He is convinced I have binned it in a zealous clear out. I haven't.

My DMs curtains are still in my bedroom in a heap. I brought them out to have a look at them and instead of taking them to the textile bank they are still looking at me reminding me of mum.
Should I cut them up and use them to wrap Christmas presents?
Seemingly it's a fashion now to have fabric wrapping paper - saving trees etc..
I am not very good at this challenge. sad

MissAdventure Sat 23-Nov-19 22:30:59

How about making cushion covers out of them?
Or.. a teddy bear?
Or.. a shopping bag?
Something that'll remind you of your mum whenever you see it.

Its difficult, I know, when you find reminders of people.

glammanana Sat 23-Nov-19 23:18:25

I've sorted some newspapers and magazines along with 2 x large blankets which where my mums and kept "just in case" they have been taken to the Dog Pound for the puppies and the blankets can be used for the bigger dogs this cold weather.

MissAdventure Sat 23-Nov-19 23:32:10

Ah, that's lovely to think they'll bring some comfort to the dogs. smile

MissAdventure Sun 24-Nov-19 16:57:40

I've been spending time rearranging all my pots, plants, jingly and dangly things in order to accommodate the new plant I bought, that I didn't need. angry

I really need to stop buying silly things I don't need.

I only bought the plant because I thought it was really ugly.

Grammaretto Sun 24-Nov-19 17:21:37

I had considered making them into something but TBH I am lazy and the material isn't that beautiful.
However, just today I was told about a 60s and 70s market which takes place a few times a year where people queue up for retro fabric. It doesn't solve the attachment problem but better than binning it.
I may do the wrapping thing if only I had something to wrap!
I think what to give with a green conscience is another thread.

MissAdventure Sun 24-Nov-19 17:36:14

Well, its nice to think of your mums curtains being hung up and admired by someone who really loves them.
Hopefully, in a cosy family home, keeping the warm in, and the draughts out.

Grannycool52 Sun 24-Nov-19 20:29:16

Well, I am still persisting. Loft is nearly empty, apart from suitcases and Christmas decorations. Various drawers & bookcases are getting more spacious by the day! This is very satisfying ?

MissAdventure Sun 24-Nov-19 21:42:47

Well done, grannycool smile

Any tips for those of us who are flagging?

Grammaretto Sun 24-Nov-19 22:50:26

super well done Grannycool52 !!
ours is not any clearer.
It's a bit like trying to stick to a diet......

Juno56 Sun 24-Nov-19 23:03:48

A pair of broken nutcrackers in the bin. I will need to replace them before Christmas though so I suppose it doesn't really count ?.

MissAdventure Sun 24-Nov-19 23:29:00

I don't think me moving plants out of the living room and into the bathroom counts, either.

Grammaretto Mon 25-Nov-19 22:30:56

Cheating I know but I did remember to put the bottles out for recycling today.
I have a few things ready to go out in a bag by the door.
How are you getting on?

MissAdventure Mon 25-Nov-19 22:42:35

I have thrown out 2 tubes of ingrown hair prevention cream. Having never had an ingrown hair, it seemed a wise move.

Also added a gold pot thing to the carrier bags.
