Today I found an ANKH in a drawer ..remember them ? This one was made of Siamese silver which was really fashionable when I was in my mid teens .I think it was a gift from a boyfriend ...I haven't come across it for decades . I dont think I've seen Siamese silver since 1972. It just appeared out of nowhere.Do you have anything that isn't seen nowadays ?

We got a house phone after the war. Until then, if we needed to make a call we went round to Granny's house. She'd had hers since before the war as had my uncle. In the 1950s, my school friends mostly had phones. I remember we picked each others' brains about homework on the phone, much to the disgust of parents waiting to use it.
The old phone box up the road from my house is now home to a defibrillator. A good use for it.

Telephones again - remember the (usually smelly) phone boxes with Button A and Button B. Was anyone wealthy enough to have a phone in the house in the 1950s? Subscriber Trunk Dialling (STD) started in 1958 where you could call the number direct instead of going through the operator, but the whole country wasn't completed until 1979. I worked for the GPO and seem to remember putting lots of non-STD calls through to Newbury and Barrow-in-Furness around 1973 which were probably the last places.

Marilla.. I get your excitement! I loved the smell of Vim.. Plus it reminds me of my mum although Im sure she would like to be remembered for something a bit more glam!

I remember, but don't have -
Stiff petticoats to make skirts flounce
Navy blue knickers for gym
Tin baths in front of the fire
Outside loo
Those liquorice root sticks that were like chewing pieces of wood
My brother playing with meccano whilst I had to play with dollies
Pac-a-macs. Did they actually keep people dry?

Does anyone remember those wall fixing tea-caddies? They were filled from the top with loose tea,of course, and had a button that you pressed to chute tea into the pot.
By the way if you are on pinterest, there are lots of "things from the past" type posts - great fun to while away an hour seeing things you had forgotten ever existed!

A jubbly was a big treat on the way home from school in summer. We always ended up with lime green and orange moustaches.
Sherbett Dab and liquorice in a yellow cardboard tube.

weren't the triangular fruit juice things called Jubblies? I remember them well.
I rest my case!

National Dried Milk from the clinic and that delicious orange juice.

I had a full length navy school mac with a warm detachable lining for the winter.

'Bob a Job', cubs and scouts.
Sunlight soap, the real stuff.
Polo Maid, circular ice creams in a cardboard wrapper

In primary school, we had leather satchels which we wore on our back. Much like the rucksacks used by children today.
But so much nicer and very sturdy.

Specks, the Vim isn’t old stock. Sadly, I got more excited seeing tins of Vim than when I browsed around Joules and Crew Clothing! ?

There are still water foundtains all over the place here.

Little plastic submarines from cereal boxes; you put bicarb in them and they dove down then back up a glass of water.

Circular fish bowls (or fish almost outgrew ours.
Amami setting lotion; Mum used to comb it through her hair then attach bulldog clip type things, with teeth, to her hair to produce waves.
Bengers Food
Petrolagar (laxative) It tasted so nice that I once clombed on a chair and took a great swig of it.
Beecham;s Powder
Lung Healers
Carter's Little Liver Pills
I loved Virol but not the Codliver Oil the govt produced for post-war toddlers.
Romper suits (unless you're a royal)
Siren suits
Machines which X-rayed your feet in shoe shops
Midget Gems (but you can still buy these in specialist shops.)
Kay-lie with a licorice stick (probably ditto)
Toy forts and cowboys and Indans
Kicking the gas lampost to make it ignite before it was even dark!

Phillip Harben, the first TV chef who used to beat all his cakes and batters with his hand rather than a spoon. smile

Man on bike selling triangular cardboard tubes of frozen fruit juice---I think they were called Snowfruits. I can remember sucking the empty tube because it still had some taste in it!

Specky Tue 08-Oct-19 16:01:05

Paddyann..enjoying this thread. ?

Specky Tue 08-Oct-19 15:58:04

Loved my pogo stick.. Not sure if you can still buy them? It used to drive my dad wild because it squeaked and marked the flooring.. Aah! Happy memories....agree with the poster who hated the roller skates that attached to your shoes.. Not so good memories of them falling off half way down the hill!

Gaunt47 Tue 08-Oct-19 12:30:08

Little net gas mantels lying under the street lights in the morning.

My brother got his fingers bitten by a delivery horse.
He was trying to feed it a piece of bread on his palm but had his fingers curled up a bit.
He was probably 4 or 5 years old.

I still have a small strip of metal with my name stamped in it.
There used to be a machine at the local railway station where you could do this for, maybe, 2d.
