Yes exactly; she had the seeds of her own destruction within her; that is at the heart of tragedy. Not an intentional, rational choice, just unforeseen consequences of foolish actions.

She attempted to use the press for her own purpose,(Andrew Morton, interviews book, briefings and leaks, all initially denied); she played cat and mouse with the press pack round the Mediterranean in the last few days of her life; she and Dodi Al-fayed were strenuously advised by his bodyguard, who was badly injured in the subsequent crash, not to leave the safety of their hotel, but chose to ignore his advice; probably unaware that the driver was drunk they nevertheless encouraged him to drive fast to escape the pursuing journalists, and both, fatally, chose not to wear seat belts. They would almost certainly have survived the crash if they had.

Harry should have met her dysfunctional family before deciding to getting engaged/married (which is the normal thing to do - especially if you are an HRH). I suppose she never said ''Come and meet my family, Harry'' in the early days?

It didn’t overshadow the trip, the media made a feature of it, the effect on the countries visited and the people the couple met was non existent.
Would it have received less publicity if it had been announced when they returned, very doubtful. Meghan has obviously had enough and decided to make a stand, Harry is backing her. Much of the criticism has been unfair, she is a strong confident woman if it continues she will leave, wether Harry goes with her is another question.

One newspaper is pointing out today that making the announcement while on a trip to S.A. representing and paid for by the British government was ill advised and only timed this way for its max. publicity. Also it has completely over shadowed the trip meant to promote UK trade i.e. they were exploiting the trip for their own advantage.

I’m sure that all of us can associate with the feelings that the world is in a mess, and what can we do about it?
In reality, none of us can change the world, just do our own little bit to try and improve things.
Harry is in more of a position to influence certain things, but don’t think the way he goes about it is always very well thought out.

I read that Harry said he found it difficult to get out of bed in the morning thinking about the world’s problems. It is true that the world is in a dire place and we can feel helpless. Now that he has a wife and son who he adores, I imagine he feels a huge responsibility, and yet a helplessness to protect them. I think he needs professional help, and to get out of the limelight, whatever and where ever that takes him.

I met him once over 60 years ago - a never-to-be forgotten experience, although Archie will be too young to remember.

I think that some of the criticism levelled at Harry recently has had validity as his views on travel, climate change etc seemed to be naive and hypocritical.

However, some of the Press has gone too far down the path of negativity as far as Meghan is concerned and this is an intrusion too far.

Would it be too much to hope that we could go back to reporting what functions, charity work etc the younger royals are involved in and less intrusion about every aspect of their private lives?
Less speculation about squabbles, fewer lurid and often unsubstantiated reports about their private lives?

I’m with you on this suziewoozie, we should all be protected from bullying and exploitation by the tabloid press.

I agree Iam but I still think it’s wrong to think that even if we knew for certain that she was the worst daughter ever to have been put on this earth, nothing is a defence for the MoS’s behaviour. We simply can’t pick and choose who should have the benefit of the protection of the law.

Also, we don't know the background to the estrangement between M and her father.
Adult children often put a positive spin on relationships with the parents until something happens that triggers unresolved stuff.
If my dad had sold one of my letters to the tabloids, amongst other betrayals, I may well have decided enough already.

The MoS have broken the law. We are all entitled to the protection of the law whether or not we are nice to our fathers. Why is this so hard to understand for some people?

Thanks as always grannyactivist for sharing personal experience in order to demonstrate the negative power of the press. Our neighbour's son and his wife were washed away in a Tsunami, they were rescued and reunited a week later in hospitals. Their 18 month old child was never found. The day after the Tsunami, we had the press at our door asking if we knew our neighbours. I sent the press away. I think we were fortunate, in that this was a tragedy in anyone's book. If it had been a different kind of news item, I'm sure the press wouldn't have gone away as easily.

I'm with others who say we know nothing about the detail of the family difficulties between Meghan and her father/step siblings. I understand the question about why Harry's statement and the legal situation has been made public now. I imagine that is down to legal timing rather than the fact the couple are seeking publicity after their successful African tour.

Harry was that traumatised 12 year old, walking behind his mother's coffin. He is anxious that his wife is receiving the same kind of critical comments in the press that his mother was subject to. Reading some of the comments on this thread tends to confirm that his fears are based in reality. No I don't know but so what I can have an opinion based on what we read,,,,,,,,,she is part of our society now....
we do know that the sh** hit the fan after Harry said Meghan had just had her first family Xmas......strangely that hurt her family who she had previously spent Xmas with......

Okay - my head is coming above the parapet as one who has experienced first hand the invasive tactics undertaken by the gutter press. I am more than glad that the MoS is being sued - because most of the people that have cause to sue don't have the limitless £££££s to do so.

A close relative of mine challenged an untrue story and eventually got a front page apology and the newspaper concerned published in full her article rebutting the lies.

However, in taking that course of action she made an enemy of the journalist and was hounded by some elements of the press thereafter. They camped outside her house (literally), they doorstepped her neighbours and even the neighbours of relatives, they telephoned and visited her parents house - and invited the parent's neighbours (who gave them short shrift) to comment. The journalist actually said to her parents that he was in business to sell papers, not to tell the truth! They then published fairy stories as facts.

I cannot overstate how detrimental this kind of press intrusion affects lives. It left my relative suicidal and suffering from PTSD and her whole family is devastated and no longer believes a word they read in the papers without checking other sources.

The 'freedom of the press' should not be allowed to impinge on the freedom of individuals to go about their lawful business.

We don’t need to know, we don’t know 100% about any of it, that’s a FACT .

I agree with merlot - why on earth bring it up in court now? In the intervening months there’s been a heck of a lot more interesting news to grab our attention. Can anyone even remember what she wrote? Does anyone care nearly a year down the line?

I find it hard to understand why more people on here do not feel for Meghan's father being cut off in the way he has been.
I thought it seemed clear he was heart broken and maybe he went about things in a clumsy way.

Meghan has never given a reason for going NC and i have read many times that before she met Harry she mentioned her father affectionately in her blog.

Not knowing the truth I just feel for the man being punished and he clearly does not know why.

Re the timing of the statement from Harry, someone said on a newspaper review show last night that it is possible that H&M are aware that a newspaper might be about to publish another story about Meghan and that is the reason they have made this announcement at this time.
