Today in Guildford, I was reminded if a thread a while back re persons who are fat/overweight.
I was beyond shocked to see 4 simply huge men and similar women, at different times, none of whom were together and all of whom were truly enormous.
I would find it unbelievable if all 5 were to fall back on the 'I'm diabetic' excuse.
The idea that people can let themselves get into that state and keep eating (as 2 of them were) is very sad indeed and then they moan that they can't fit into bus or airline seats and can't work because of A, B, C or D.
Are there no answers to obesity because there were also some seriously overweight men whose man boobs and bellies hung pendulously over their trousers.

On another note.
I had an appointment at Virgin Money in Guildford.
On arrival I was immediately greeted by a beautifully turned out advisor who offered me tea, coffee, biscuits...?? and showed me to the several sumptuous velvet armchairs and settees piled high with velvet cushions.
The 60" tv was showing the BBC afternoon news and weather and my drink was placed on a coaster on a glass table.
A man with a hi-viz vest was lounging on a swivel chair opposite, dunking biscuits in his tea and reading a newspaper.
At one end of the room was a fully kitted out kitchen with a white modern dining table and chairs and a 'rest room' with M&F loos situated on an adjacent corridor.
The ceiling lights were enormous with plush red, gold and black drum shades inset with circular mirrors which reflected the floor areas.

I completed my business seated on a red velvet banquette with a top spec Mac pc suspended from the ceiling which could be pulled down and angled to suit the advisor.
When I left, she invited me to drop in any time I'm in town to take refreshment and read, watch tv chill out.
This begs the question where does the money to support this, come from?
I don't even bank with them, mind you, the furniture was utterly luxurious. ?

Sorry should read ‘your’.

Boosgran Sat 14-Sept-19 22:25:30

Boring now MawB she said she’s not going to read it so please do just let it go. You’ve made you’re feelings quite clear.

MawB Sat 14-Sept-19 22:03:15

You're shameful. Argue amongst yourselves as I won't be on this thread again, so anything vilifying me won't be seen/read by me and your time will be wasted
No great loss then. Any fule kno it was a deliberately provocative OP oozing smugness and intolerance with a hefty dollop of self-satisfaction and boasting thrown in for good measure.
Why? Who knows? hmmhmm

Yes Gabriella enough now. I too think it has got out of hand. Emotions are running high. I did not agree with you and said so, but the bit about ethnics (not said by you)did offend me more.
I for one am sorry it did get personnel, and I did not know some of the things that were said.As I have stated up thread I have found your othher threads interesting just could not agree with you on this.

Any fool can see quite clearly that a simple observation can be hijacked by a horde of objectors who protest in the strongest terms as if it was they who were being spoken sbout.
Racism is mentioned (not by me) and at least one poster feels she has to apologise in large letters.
We've no idea what size other posters or their relations are or what disabilities they or their relatives may have. They are people with whom we discuss life and all it's joys, worries and craziness.
Their ethnicity, religion, sexual preferences and orientation should, IMO, not be discussed as it's not our business and causes trouble.
There are cliques, as on all social media platforms but they should not bully those who have different views and should not encourage others to endorse their view of the target.
Frankly, as mature women from a more measured era, I never thought I'd hear such vitriol spouted.
Unfounded accusations bandied about and hurt feelings spread like a barrel of melted butter over this thread.
Enough. It's disgusting and the hijackers who commandeered the thread, making it into more than the original post ever was by citing their or their relatives struggles with weight, should hang their heads.
You're shameful. Argue amongst yourselves as I won't be on this thread again, so anything vilifying me won't be seen/read by me and your time will be wasted.

pinkquartz, I couldn't agree more with your comment. '*It is so schoolgirl she even has a clique of followers who stick up for her.*'

Obviously we all have people we like chatting to. But why would you defend outright nastiness?

Gonegirl Sat 14-Sept-19 19:07:38

The capital letters in my post were not shouting btw. More like despair.

Gonegirl Sat 14-Sept-19 19:05:50

Please don't be hurt because of me pinkquartz.

petra Sat 14-Sept-19 19:02:04

Don't come on the bloody thread then!!! No one is glueing your eyes to it.

Gonegirl Sat 14-Sept-19 18:54:19

I am not into kicking anybody.

Gonegirl Sat 14-Sept-19 18:53:36

OH I'M SORRY!!!!

I wasn't picking on you! It was just a little joke! I had no idea anyone could get upset over something like that. I don't know anything about you.

I AM SORRY SORRY SORRY.

Nortsat46 Sat 14-Sept-19 18:50:24

I too have found this thread despressing and the OP comments judgemental and quite upsetting.
I don't think making contentious remarks to provoke debate is ever going to yield a good outcome.
If the original post had been differently titled, I would have avoided it, I mistakenly thought it might be something light hearted.
I am interested in politics and society but choose not to debate those issues here and avoid the political posts, for that reason.
Personally, I wish this thread was closed.

pinkquartz Sat 14-Sept-19 18:47:23

Why is it ok gonegirl ? I didn't know you was as awful as Gabriella why pick on me?
Oh I know I am vulnerable so I get the kicking do I? Yes disabled and fat I thought i made it clear. I can't walk I take meds now I am fat and people are rude and it hurts!

so now I get called by an ugly name what a load of crap is this? you are grand parents!!!! no wonder bullying in school is rife, you teach it and pass it down.

(I do like Gabriella's pink warts quote. It is quite clever. All due respect to the poster whose name the original is)

none of you are funny and you Maggiemaybe yes I am kind but GG is often rude to people and pretends not to be. It is so schoolgirl she even has a clique of followers who stick up for her.
pathetic

How dare you be so rudeangry

rafichagran Sat 14-Sept-19 18:43:58

Yes I have read that story about the 14 year old school girl. Very sad and like previous poster said the school should not be difficult. I feel very sorry for her.

grannylyn65 Sat 14-Sept-19 18:38:07

Infamy, crisps and coke ????

maddyone Sat 14-Sept-19 18:33:32

Interestingly, there is a story in the news today about a schoolgirl, aged 14, who doesn’t fit into the regulation school skirts of her school because she needs a size 24-26 skirt. The school are apparently being difficult about her not wearing the regulation skirt. I don’t agree with the school at all, the girl needs to be able to attend school in a non regulation skirt. However, I am very, very saddened to hear about a young girl of 14 being size 24-26. She’s unfortunately likely to be bullied by her schoolmates. What a very sad story.

maddyone Sat 14-Sept-19 18:20:33

Bossyrossy, I have a cousin with that nickname, or she did have when younger. Now I’m wondering if I’m speaking to my cousin.

Bossyrossy Sat 14-Sept-19 16:34:07

Twenty years ago we did not have a problem with obesity in the general population. What has changed, I wonder?
