When did you last eat...

We eat tinned peaches in syrup (hate the fruit juice variety. What fruit does it come from anyway? Doesn’t taste remotely like peaches). We have them with cream or ice cream or evaporated milk, DH’s favourite. Tinned rhubarb for crumbles, tinned pineapple on bacon joints, tinned raspberries in trifles, tinned mandarin oranges mixed with whipped cream to sandwich a sponge together, tinned black cherries for a Black Forest gateau, tinned whole pears topped with chocolate sauce and a crystallised violet for pear Helene. No we don’t eat tinned fruit much!?

Last week. I was in hospital for a few days (pneumonia, still coughing but fine, thanks) and received a small dish of tinned pears every day to follow my bread rolls and jam at breakfast time.

Just had some tinned rhubarb not as good as real for sure but I love rhubarb and my own source died off in the garden and it’s not often in the shops

I seem to use tinned pineapple quite a lot - in various recipes, and I usually have a couple of tins of apples in the cupboard, in case I feel the urge to make a crumble, but no, we never have tinned fruit as part of a meal, mainly because we gave up having two courses for our dinner years ago.

I keep Tinned Pineapple (mostly used on Gammon steaks baked in the oven) Tinned Grapefruit (eaten with "ready to eat" apricots for breakfast) and tinned mandarins (eaten with Ice cream or Sorbet in summer) in stock all the time. Sadly, my hubby doesn't like tinned pears at all (I do) but we have two Pear trees in the garden from which we get LOADS of fruit to eat. We end up giving them away at the gate, for anyone in the village to eat/use.

I hate all tinned fruit, except for mandarin oranges ... can't stand stewed fruit either, which was a staple pud with custard when I was a child. Means that I am "not a pudding person", something I'm very glad of now I seem to have to fight the flab! ?

When I was a child we either had rice pudding or tinned fruit for dessert on Sundays. The fruit was always with evaporated milk. Sometimes my gran sent a fruit tart for us which was lovely , especially blackberry and apple. My favourite.

My children loved ' Goldfish jelly ' in other words mandarin oranges in orange or lime jelly. My mother put tinned pears underneath the most delicious chocolate mousse.

I have been shopping this afternoon. As I couldn't find any tinned fruit in our new ALDI store, I went to Tesco.
They used to sell tinned Mango, Guava and Lychees, I'm sure, but not any of those in sight in the store.
But, while looking, I got chatting to a friendly chap, who asked if I had tried the value range of mandarins, rather than the more expensive ones.
I hadn't, but did put a tin in my basket. He said he had them for breakfast, with evaporated milk, and we had quite a chat. Nice.
There were very few people in our local Tesco, I think ALDI is having an impact.
By the way, I wanted to buy lard, for pastry making, but ALDI told me it was a seasonal product, so it will be in store at Christmas!
So that was a Tesco buy as well,
A visit to Waitrose seems to be on the cards for tomorrow.

There is a fab recipe on BBC Food which uses tinned pears. It is 'Squidgy chocolate pear pudding' and is absolutely delicious.

Not being used to using tinned fruit, I had to hunt for the pears as they are not stocked in all supermarkets but am now converted. I had assumed that the pears would be squashy but they were fine. It is worth persevering in finding tinned pears as the end result is wonderful and is obviously very healthy too.... Well, they are fruit!

How can anyone, hand on heart, say they enjoy eating rhubarb!!

Oh lovely stringy rhubarb in a crumble, with thick custard. Lovely!

I do a lovely chicken curry with tinned peach halves.

I love tinned lychees (but prefer fresh)

Used to love tinned fruit salad - especially if I managed to get the cherry half. And of course it HAD to be with carnation milk

Oh, and I also love chocolate orange overnight oats with tinned mandarin segments. Yum

This thread really makes me want to go back to eating old-fashioned comfort food.

I wish you still buy evaporated milk in the small tins. Only seem able to get the larger ones now.

My daughter makes a chicken curry with tinned peaches HurdyGurdy. It's lovely.

I use tinned pineapple when making a sweet and sour sauce and my OH sometimes has peaches with ice cream.
Years back when we used to have a Sunday tea I would sometimes make a chocolate sponge flan case and put tinned pears and that quick setting jelly glaze (cannot remember the name) in it, lovely with a dollop of cream.

Love tin pears with ice-cream, also use them in a chocolate/almond tart that I make. I just love tin fruit and also have a few tins in the cupboard.

Tinned pears in the loaf tin first, then pour in the gingerbread mix and bake. A marriage made in heaven.

I'm not too much of an 'afters' person, but I do love gingerbread.

We used to have tinned fruit with bread and butter at Sunday Tea Time. I was one of 6 children and later realised it was a way of filling us up. Still make raspberry jelly with a tin of raspberries for the grand vhildren and the grown ups seem to like it too!

Gonegirl, our local Waitrose stocks small cans of Carnation.

Tinned pineapple to go on gammon or homemade pizza. Fruit cocktail for trifle. Mention of tinned cream brought back lots of childhood memories! We were in India last year and were talking about how when we first went you could only get Carnation milk not fresh - prompting scouring the shops for some but we could only find condensed milk, which I remember as being really thick and sweet.
