Tinned fruit?
I have just done an online food order and one of the special offers that came up was
tinned pears.
I can't remember the last time I ate tinned fruit of any sort.
It reminds me of Sunday tea with the Aunts, peaches and evaporated milk after tinned salmon and lettuce with salad cream

As children a regular pudding was tinned fruit and evaporated milk. Only tinned fruit I've had for years though has been tinned pineapple rings to top gammon.

Tinned fruit were very much a Sunday treat in our house. My mum also always had at least one tin of salmon in the larder for Sunday tea sandwiches, the salmon she used to mash with vinegar before making the sandwiches.
We then used to either have homemade cake or if we had visitors, tinned fruit and tinned cream yum!
When we have a family barbecue, my son often makes a trifle, of course using tinned fruit. I must get some when I do my grocery shopping - I may even treat myself to a tin of evaporated milk!

Just had a look at the label on my statins it reads:

“ Do not take more than one or two small glasses of Grapefruit Juice per day with this medicine”

So I reckon it’s ok to have a bit of tinned grapefruit from time to time. Too much grapefruit in any form can prevent the statins from working.

In fact I sometimes have tinned mandarins mixed with a bit of tinned grapefruit for breakfast topped with honey and natural yogurt. Delicious.

Yes Riggie. My mum made us have bread and butter with our tinned peaches and evaporated milk. Very odd!

Gonegirl Fri 13-Sept-19 11:43:37

You do know that fruit tinned in syrup is a very highly processed food? shock

Yes. I know. Never did me any harm. hmm

Tigertooth Fri 13-Sept-19 11:46:16

Oh my word - tinned peaches from Lidl with homemade rice pudding is a staple in our home.

Hate all tinned fruit except lychees. My mother used to bring tinned peaches and salmon when she came to stay. Straight in the bin after she had left.

GinJeannie Fri 13-Sept-19 12:15:44

Oh yes Gad3....the bread and butter with tinned fruit! Post war time....the bread filled your tummy, cheap n cheerful! If I didn’t eat it, there was no homemade cake after!

Missadventure the fluff dessert I was describing can be made more fancy by topping with whipped cream and the relevant fruit. We used to have blackcurrant jelly flavour, topped with freshly picked blackberries ( brambles), or raspberry with fresh ones on top. Let me know how you get on!

dragonfly46 Fri 13-Sept-19 12:32:07

mrswoo grapefruit is a strange one. I was not allowed to eat it when on my cancer medication as it made it work too well!

annsixty Fri 13-Sept-19 12:36:47

I used to make fluff dessert but I don’t think you use the full amount of water in the jelly.
I think you subtract the volume of the evaporated milk.
Could be wrong, often am.

MissAdventure Fri 13-Sept-19 12:39:05

That sounds sensible, ann.

I'll give it a whirl, I think.

As a child we ate tinned fruit and custard but it's so long ago since I've eaten any tinned fruit that I can't remember.

However, I do recall trying tinned raspberries with tinned cream and it was horrible. Never again.

nanamac77 Fri 13-Sept-19 13:11:14

Don't forget lychees. To be honest I don't think I've ever had fresh ones -they look so challenging ! But tinned ones are delicious.

Bluesindy1 Fri 13-Sept-19 13:12:06

I remember the tins of mixed fruit, there was always one random cherry in it! Served with evaporated milk!

GrammaH Fri 13-Sept-19 13:29:04

Can't remember the last time we had tinned fruit. We're fortunate enough to have a large garden & orchard with all manner of fruit and veg so never short of fresh, stored or frozen. When I day " fortunate"...it's hard work! Thinking of downsizing to somewhere easier to manage so may well be heading for the tinned fruit aisles....!

grandtanteJE65 Fri 13-Sept-19 13:30:02

About a week ago. We always have tinned fruit and whipped cream in the house for a quick treat.

paperbackbutterfly Fri 13-Sept-19 13:53:18

Apart from tinned grapefruit for breakfasts I tend to buy fresh because it's not as expensive now as it was when we were small

Jane10 Fri 13-Sept-19 13:55:48

Ooh tinned mandarins and Carnation milk! Am transported back to Saturday treat of my long ago youth!

Camelotclub Fri 13-Sept-19 14:02:43

Waitrose do a tin of cooked slice Granny Smiths' which are ideal for a crumble. No slicing and dicing and peeling involved!

Grannycool52 Fri 13-Sept-19 14:04:17

Jane 10, like you I guiltily sneak a little tinned fruit into my dish during hotel breakfasts, but it would never occur to me to buy tins in the supermarket!
During a recent hospital stay I was given little pots of ready-made jelly. It was the first time I had had jelly since childhood and I loved it!!

TrendyNannie6 Fri 13-Sept-19 14:14:02

I haven’t had any for years but used to love mandarin segments fruit cocktail n peaches with single cream over, that reminds me I must buy some lol

Musicgirl Fri 13-Sept-19 14:23:09

We had tinned pineapple with jelly and cream for our pudding on Sunday. Delicious.

Scottiebear Fri 13-Sept-19 14:26:12

Annsixty. My mum used to make raspberry fluff when we were children. Jelly and whipped in evaporated milk. As you say, im sure its only half the normal water for the jlly. Have tried making it myself but struggled. Always end up with top fluffed but bottom just milky. Don't know where I'm going wrong.

I think the popularity of 'tinned fruit' began to wane after we joined the EU - way back when wink. After that, we could import fruit that was both 'fresh' AND 'out of season in the UK' relatively cheaply than what was previously available.

Maybe 'tinned fruit' will begin to increase in popularity once more, IF a no-deal Brexit does go ahead.

Have to admit that Tinned Grapefruit is very useful, as Teetime has already said and I always DID love 'tinned pears with evap' on a Sunday teatime grin.
