Gransnet. Should I Be On It?

(193 Posts)

I only comment infrequently on here. Looking at all the different topics and viewpoints, I have come to the conclusion that I am not suitable to be on Gransnet because;

a. I voted Leave, and still want to Leave.

b. I like having a monarchy and (most) of the Royal Family.

and worst of all !

c. I am not a dog lover.

There, I have committed the 3 deadly Gransnet sins.

That's the first time I've ever seen GGMK3 make a humorous post! grin

seacliff Thu 12-Sept-19 10:31:42

Anja's post 07:31:39....totally agree....but in my case, cats ?

GracesGranMK3 Thu 12-Sept-19 10:35:00

GGM3 All true - plus they enjoy drowning puppies, send children to work in the mines until they are too weak to work and then eat them!

I knew someone would take offence to statistics - again! As for sending children to work in the mines, I have certainly come across the suggestion (by a very obsessed, very right-wing Leaver) that children be put to pick the fruit that the "immigrants" used to do.

Many will judge a person by his friends. The friends of "Boris" (the great Johnson) are not scoring very highly at the moment from what I can see.

Beckett*, Marydoll, re no responses to posts, it happens to me too. I think it happens to everyone actually. It's just that we only notice when it happens to us as individuals. Even so, I enjoy reading the often very well informed posts by others.

Crikey, I sometimes think people never get their noses out of Hansard. Saves me reading it...

Oldwoman70 Thu 12-Sept-19 10:39:19

Not taking offence GGM3 Just amazed that people actually believe these "surveys". Really, if someone asked you how you voted in the referendum and then asked you about your sex life wouldn't you tell them to go away (only with slightly stronger language)?

I believe it was Disraeli or Mark Twain who said "there are lies, damned lies and statistics"

GracesGranMK3 Thu 12-Sept-19 10:50:20

They are not "surveys" Oldwoman70 they are statistical analysis. The sort of thing that often makes your life easier because it helps people understand what is going on. I put it down to the Leaver voters generally lower level of education that they don't understand that?.

They all come with a caveat. More people, a majority, 60% or whatever. Not one single bit of analysis says "all leave voters" or "all remain voters". Not one comes saying that correlation equals causation either. So just because you have a boring conservative sex life does not mean you will vote to leave - just that more do. There could be all manner of reasons why they voted to leave but perhaps it does tell us that generally leave voters are less experimental, less brave in the face of change than remain voters overall?

sunseeker Thu 12-Sept-19 10:57:46

Oh dear, why is it necessary to turn what I assumed was a fairly lighthearted thread into yet another thread where remainers and leavers have to fight each other. Yes I know some people are passionate about it - one way or the other - but surely it doesn't have to consume your whole life.

Oldwoman70 Thu 12-Sept-19 11:01:36

You are, of course, "sunseeker* absolutely right - however having a "lower level of education" I can't possibly be expected to understand that.

When the argument is lost bring out the insults!

Sara65 Thu 12-Sept-19 11:04:52

Agree with Sunseeker

Labaik Thu 12-Sept-19 11:14:58

'Anja; 'This proves why I prefer my dogs to most people...at least I know which end the shit comes out'....grin this is why, as a passionate remainer/dog lover and [sort of] royal family fan [with reservations]I stick with gransnet….goes away chuckling...

chaffinch Thu 12-Sept-19 11:18:55

Thank you all for your comments on my little post. Certainly did not expect to see so many!
I’m sorry that I seem to have managed to upset some GN’ers, that was not my intention.
As some have noticed, it was intended as a light hearted and humorous attempt at highlighting the fact we all have differing views on so many subjects, which is what Gransnet is all about I trust.
I shall continue to read and occasionally post on anything that takes my fancy- you have been warned!

???????????????????????

Gonegirl Thu 12-Sept-19 11:38:08

How does anyone know there are more remainers than leavers on GN? confused Was there a poll when I wasn't looking?

Sara65 Thu 12-Sept-19 11:52:09

Gonegirl

I don’t agree anyway, it seems pretty equal to me

Bridgeit Thu 12-Sept-19 12:38:27

Surely One would have expected leave voters to be more adventurous in their sex lives ,ie taking a chance
Where as those wishing to stay in the EU could be deemed to not like changes.
Depends on one’s position I suppose ?

lemongrove Thu 12-Sept-19 13:49:05

Yes Brid I agree, and I have a favourite position, it’s a bit ‘out there’ and novel, and involves a certain amount of hard work, but is rewarding in the end.grin ?

Bridgeit Thu 12-Sept-19 14:25:01

??

Oh dear, why is it necessary to turn what I assumed was a fairly lighthearted thread into yet another thread where remainers and leavers have to fight each other.

A lighthearted thread? One where someone loudly declares they don't think they fit in because they "... voted Leave, and still want to Leave." Please tell me what you expect from something like that?

Leavers proclaiming they are hard done by is not going to feel lighthearted to anyone other than other leavers who feel they are hard done by - and they are not! They just don't want people on here who disagree with them. I go on lots of lighthearted internet chats but in not one of them does anyone ever mentions politics. Really sunseeker, I ask once more, what do you expect?

GracesGranMK3 Thu 12-Sept-19 14:38:27

Surely One would have expected leave voters to be more adventurous in their sex lives ,ie taking a chance.

I'm not sure that going back to the 1950s or the rubbish I see about "we managed during the war", gives an impression of liking change Bridgeit. I have yet to see a decent argument that we will do anything other than going back to a time people believe existed but didn't. I rarely if ever see anything about forward change - such as we have had over the last 40 years - and never anything underpinned by academic reasoning. Generally, it's just wishful thinking and guesswork.

MawB Thu 12-Sept-19 14:50:31

I don’t see how just affixing a ?to a post in which three stereotypes are itemised, then saying “I don’t fit any of these, should I be on GN? “ constitutes a “lighthearted” thread or even humour. <sigh> ?‍♂️

Beckett Thu 12-Sept-19 14:53:25

Oh good grief! This thread is in the Chat section, not News and Politics - why does everything have to end in an argument.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 12-Sept-19 14:58:50

Beckett unfortunately some members of GN do little else ??

anna7 Thu 12-Sept-19 15:04:29

Does everything have to be about Brexit. Chaffinch has said she intended this to be a light hearted thread and she did not intend to upset anyone and that was the way the majority of posters interpreted and responded to the thread. I 'm fed up of the way almost every thread, or so it seems, degenerates into back biting.

Bridgeit Thu 12-Sept-19 15:05:12

Me thinks you have misread or mis understood me GG
I am suggesting Leavers May be more inclined to go for the unknown & taking chances
Whereas Remain Voters, May be happy with what they have & do not wish to take chances or rock the boat.
I guess it all depends on what sort of life each one of us currently live, for sure there will be a mixture of both. What the percentage will be ,remains(? ) to be seen!
My main concerns are for the elderly & our young people

Bridgeit Thu 12-Sept-19 15:11:38

Yes Chaffinch, you definitely should be on Gn,
Apologies if we have ruined your lighthearted thread
But if we all turn on our TVs & listen to Boris we should all be crying with laughter....... but then the reality of him will be enough to make us really cry. ?
