Toilet Talk

I don't want anyone to be murdered, neither do I want men pretending to be transgender using facilities which have traditionally been single sex .There are instances of men who have committed sexual offences deciding that they are transgender, being sent to women only prisons and then sexually assaulting women in those institutions. It doesn't take much imagination to realise that self identifying is an open door for some men to behave appallingly.
I also think that there are some women from certain religions/ethnic backgrounds who just would not use a lavatory if there were men around who were not relatives. What about their rights?
Sorry, but if I want to use a public lavatory/ changing room or other space where I have traditionally felt safe then I don't want that safety compromised.
Neither do I want to clean public lavatories because a man has been in them. I do enough of that at home.

Just to inform you - 26 transgender people were murdered in USA last year and so far this year 12 transgender people. So I think the fact you get embarrassed about if a "man" is peeing next door to you rather pales in comparison. So to give them an individual toilet cubicle without fear or harassment is rather worthwhile. By all means take some wipes with you and how much effort does it take to put the toilet seat down. I do it in whatever toilet I use.

I once had to use a hole in the floor loo on a rocking train! Not an experience to be repeated! However good your squatting technique and your aim the movement of the train ensured most of it went on/in your shoes!! .

What’s wrong with ‘Ladies’ and ‘Gents’? If trans people need a public loo they just have to realise that they are in the minority and must use the facilities available as they believe they are, M or F. I am fed up with minorities expecting everything to change to suit them.

Nice toilets make my day! We were out today in the seaside town of Portrush. I went to the loo in a cafe and they were spotless. My daughter asked to use the loo in a store and was told the toilets were for staff but they'd make an exception. However someone had to go with her. She was accompanied by a young man. "You're not going to stand outside and listen, are you?" my daughter asked. He assured her he wouldn't!

I've always thought that public conveniences should be unisex. I remember when helping to plan a new small public building where there were to be only three adult toilets, the planners thought that one should be designated male and two female even though over 90% of the adults using the building were women! We soon disabused them of that idea and made them unisex!

Surely others apart from myself have used women's loos which have been left in a filthy state? Cleaning & drying the seat before use, flushing the loo before you can even think of doing anything, pushing aside dropped wrappers from tampons, etc. And surely I'm not the only person who has had to try to dry the floor before I dare to drop my trousers or alternatively somehow keep them hoicked up round my knees!

Having lived with a few males in my house, I was personally always relieved when I entered the toilet and found the seat up. It did at least mean that they hadn't just taken aim through the seat and hoped for the best!

I would like to believe that we women would, after the initial shock of the new, have a civilising effect on the menfolk's use of toilets. For a start it would, at last, mean equal queuing rights for both sexes. It would also save those awful moments when you have to let a boy child go to the men's loos and you lurk wait outside the door just incase - or was it just me? It's not only women that can get assaulted in toilets.

As long as they are designed with good partitions with handwashing and other facilities in each cubicle, I can't see the problem. And it stops the endless bickering, posturing and moral panic in the media about where a transsexual can go to the toilet!

It pains me to say this but, at my place of work, the ladies loos are left in a far worse state than the gent's loos. Three times recently, the ladies loos were left in such a disgusting state that we had to clean them up before the office cleaners came in. The gents are a bit smelly but nowhere near as bad as the ladies.

I wonder how the men will feel about joining the very long queues that we ladies often have to endure. BTW I can never understand why the main entry doors open inwards necessitating handling same as we leave after we have washed our hands .

I'm very fussy about loos. I know the nice department stores that have them - separate sex is a must. When I'm out and about I've been known to go behind a tree!

Frankly, most small cafés and other small places only have one toilet here these days, so as long as it is clean I am happy to use it.

It is a much greater problem that due to the cost of cleaning or due to vandalism a lot of train and bus stations no longer have public toilets!

The gel sanitizer doesn’t kill Norovirus, but soap and water does. Our local hospital has handwash stations alongside the hand sanitizer bottles.

We are on holiday , camping in the south of France, where thy shower/loo blocks are unisex. The state some men leave the loos , particularly in the evening is gross ! I go armed with anti -bac wipes when ever I venture there ! Most don’t wash their hands either !

During my long life I have experienced all sorts of toilets. When I was little in the twenties and thirties ladies toilets had penny in the slot and there was a woman who wiped the seat before you used it. I do not remember any hand washing facilities. Unless you did no twos you didn’t wipe your bottom. Paper was like grease proof anyway.."
On coach trips the men would line up in front of a hedge and the women relieve themselves behind it. No washing of hands before eating their sandwiches. At a race course ladies was a tent with a row of buckets.
LCamping in France sixty years ago the toilet was a plank over an ditch. Another time pointed to the end of a field.
In the
sixties my husband stopped at a garage in Belgium asked for the toilet and was shown a wall in full view of the road. France still had urinals in the centre of villages and towns. Men would relieve themselves by the roadside and it was common for men to use the offside rear wheel of their vehicle.

On holiday in Italy I reluctantly had to use a community toilet. The seat was up. So gingerly lowering it I found it to be perfectly clean. When I removed myself from said seat, it automatically raised itself to the upright position. I thought this was a great idea!

In some countries women can get raped in mixed toilets. It is rediculous that the majority of eoman get inconvenienced just to appease men who want to be woman. I say they are men as most still have penis. In rich counties let transgender have their own loo.

It's a subject I have mixed feelings about. I do really prefer the idea of separate ladies and gents loos. However I have a son with SN and need to go in with him - hes a young adult so too old to go into the ladies with me and I'm not going into the gents with him. We use the accessible toilets as they are normally unisex. However in some places they are situated inside the regular ladies or gents loo blocks so again that's impossible for us. Taking him out for the day without Dad there can be a bit fraught!!

I never flush the toilet with my hands I use a piece of toilet paper. I think when one has wiped ones self hands are not very clean,then opening the toilet door I do the same, use som paper, no one ever knows if people do wash their hands,and usually they do after they come out of the toilet,there isnt often a wash basin inside the toilet room.I love automatic taps instead of bacteria covered normal taps. I must sound hysterical, but having been a nurse all my life I have learnt a thing or two.

Reminded me of a story when I was doing my nurse training
( shortly after Florence Nightingale ) The tutor was asked if it was possible to catch a venereal disease from public lavatories. The tutor replied "yes but what a strange place to have sex "

Oh yuk those toilets on planes! After a 3-4-5 hour flight they're not fit for anyone to use; and definitely not me! Wet seats, wet floors, dirty washbasin and yards of loo paper all over the place. No. Never. Especially as I have a dread of the plane crashing while I'm the one trapped on the loo minus seat belt!

A friend has been telling me about the toilets at Glastonbury, apparently you stand up and wee into a cardboard bowl with a spout on the end, and it all goes into a big pool of wee, she said all you can see is a circle of bottoms!

Hi I too have the closed in issues. Unfortunately I now do have to use accessible facilities for physical reasons but used them previously having had panic attacks in some very closed in cubicles. Comforted by Waitrose actually putting a sign on their accessible loo saying not all disabilities are obvious. Others have followed suit. Accessible loos are much bigger, the doors always open out and you have the comfort of an alarm cord.

So if men can claim to be female and use ladies toilets, does that mean my OH can expect to go into a gents toilet and find a gender neutral lady with her knickers down sat in a urinal?

Pantglas1 I had never considered the situation you mention in your first para at 12:08. I'm now totally put off my lunch! Yuk!

I've just come back from a remote area with just one set of public toilets. There were two toilets for men (according to dh!) while the women's just had one which was also the disabled toilet. Why couldn't they have put the disabled loo into the gents? Or have a disabled loo in both? Why is it always women who have budge up and make room?
