'Semester' and 'baby shower'

My cousin’s husband has just died very suddenly, 65 years old. She said when she was in the bank opening a new business account in her own name, the bank manager(female) kept addressing her as “lovely lady”. My cousin found that annoying and rather unprofessional. Would have preferred Mrs. So and So or Christian name, but didn’t feel like saying anything.

The following is the beginning of some doggerel that I wrote in 2015. I wont bore you with it all.

With gritted teeth and raised BP I’ve learned to compromise
When hearing words like DIGIVERSE, CHILLAX and DIARISE,
And not directly have a fit when listening to the news
For language changes all the time, though it may not me amuse!

My moisturiser’s not just smooth, it soothes and MATTIFIES
For it’s a COSMACEUTICAL, the label states - whatever that implies.
Men aren’t just mates, or drinking pals, but now they may be labelled
As having a BROMANCE, by trendy types, like an imaginary fable!
But worse maybe is a FRENEMY with which they could contend
For that’s a secret rival, who is pretending to be a friend.

I hate furbaby, grandbaby, x sleeps until x (eg 2 sleeps until we go on holiday). Also hate it when people say bless on social media or in real life when they see what see as a cute picture or story. And I really hate the terms snowflake and chav because they are so judgemental and unfair.
I would never say hubby and don't like the sound of it but don't hate it as much.
I quite like playdate and sleepover they just describe what you are going to do.

Although more a phrase than a word, I have a friend who always ends a phone conversation with "Love you lots" Drives me mad.

Even worse, I think, is grand furbabies, a term used by my DD’s MiL. Makes me cringe every time. They’re by DD’s dogs!

Kids, instead of children; partner instead of wife, husband; guys (what happened to all the dolls?). "Do you want it to go?" confused me once in a restaurant.

We say be times? as in we must go to bed be times as we have an early start etc!
I also cannot stand gotten! and my eldest DD says “on the weekend” instead of “at the weekend” which also drives me potty??‍♀️

When people ask "can I get a" instead of please can I have or please may I have.
Also when out for a coffee or a meal etc when the server says "Hi guys ". Where did manners go?

I must admit to having a 'granddoggy' but not a furbaby.
I hate being called darling by perfect strangers.
I think partner is acceptable as they can be male, female etc and is a term when not married.

'In a dark place' is another annoying phrase for me. Having grown up in an older house, it gives me visions of someone shut up in a coal hole.

Hate to hear of someone being lost (as in “she lost her husband last year”. Sounds as if he was mislaid in Sainsbury’s rather than the sad truth that he died.
