Autograph Books.

Someone wrote in mine 'It starts when you sink in his arms and ends with your arms in the sink' How true!

My Grandmother was the first to write in mine - she'd bought it for me .....................

Little pots of powder and

Among others, I had Reginald Dixon (Blackpool Tower organist), Violet Carson (Ena Sharples), Noel Dyson (Ida Barlow - Ken's Mum), Frankie Vaughan. My Uncle was a 'Press Photographer' and he used to take my autograph book with him on assignments ;-).

I have a wartime autograph book of my mother's. She served in the WAAF (later the WRAF) on Communications at Plymouth during WWII. The book has autographs of all her companions in arms, my father before they were officially an item, and various others with whom she came into contact. It's a very full and interesting little book with illustrations and drawings by a number of conributors. A wonderful memento.

One of my teachers wrote, 'May the wind always be at your back,' which was traditional, Irish I think. The book has long since disappeared.

I still have my school autograph book and a second one which has all the autographs of the Birmingham City football club when Freddie Goodwin was the manager, including that of Trevor Francis

Another entry was ‘ by hook or by crook I’ll be last in this book “... only to be followed by : “ did you never discover I could write on the cover “.

Yes, 'By hook or by crook . . . ' starts my childhood autograph book.

My infant headmistress wrote

'The world is so full of a number of things
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings'.

How I wish I'd tried to get the Beatles' autograph when I went to see them live.

Yes...I had one but only started using it in senior school.
The usual family jokes were written but I did get signatures of the Everly Brothers, Frank Ifield Patrick Macnee, most Liverpool bands who were then mostly unknown, John Conte, the NZ All Blacks, all Queen members, Margi Clarke, Valentino, Monica Lewinsky, Gilbert & George and sundry others...too many to mention.

My grandad was a driving instructor and was teaching one of the young Burnley football team to drive. He got his autograph for me in the hope he might be famous one day. I can't remember his name now but sadly he never made the big time. Most of my entries were family and friends, no-one famous and I don't know where the book is now. I expect it will surface when I properly declutter.

My Sunday school teacher wrote the following in my book:
'Whether the weather be cold
Or whether the weather be hot
Whatever the weather, we'll weather the weather
Whether we like it or not'
I've never had a problem remembering which whether/weather to use - so it was extremely useful...!

If in this book you chance to look and on this page you frown.
Think of the girl who spoiled your book by writing upside down.

I do like whatever the weather....
