Best years of our lives?

I recently bought one of those A4 blank lined books with 'My Life' written on the front and I've had many a happy time going over the past and writing it all down.

When it came to my early school years and the teachers we had however, I remember a couple of 'tartars'. We were in the second infants class aged about 6 and our teacher used to hit us quite hard across the knuckles with the ruler if we got our sums wrong. It was also quite common to have the board rubber thrown across the room at the culprit who talked in class, with amazing accuracy! Imagine that today?

Later on, we had a history teacher who terrified us just hearing her footsteps coming down the corridor and heaven help the one who had a cold and sniffed through the lesson! I also remember having my head slapped for drawing on the condensation on the window by one teacher. The same one gave me a dressing down for having the "wrong shade of green" hair ribbon. I do remember the lovely teachers I had, but the tartars seem to stand out in my memory. Anybody with similar stories?

To Ginny again -

I've got three of his prints in my living room. Bought them at the museum in Manchester.

Oops! Got that a bit wrong. Thought you said head teacher was L S Lowry. blush Just googled. He worked all his life as a rent collector. (Who knew)

Many of our ex teachers would be in court for assault and battery nowadays- not that it would happen although I think some boys are still caned in private schools but not girls.

I remember so well when I was aged about 10, during a spelling test, being taken either to the front of the class or out to the corridor (can't quite remember the exact location) and being given the strap for putting the letter 'k' into the word 'picnic' and at age 5, in the 'Infant Class' having my fingers slapped hard for dangling them into the goldfish bowl. Oh yes and having my 5th form Art Teacher holding up the painting I was working on, to the rest of the class, and sarcastically asking "and is this the Best you can do??" How embarrassing when everything almost at age 15yrs is embarrassing. But there's good memories too.

I went to a Catholic primary and secondary school run by an order of nuns (early 60's to mid 70's) and although they were strict they were never 'evil' or vicious! The head mistress was a little nun and she did cane the boys (and there were some terrors in my class) but when my Mum started as school secretary the first thing she did was persuade Sister J to give up the cane and, I think, Mum snapped it in two!

There were some strict nuns at my secondary school too but nothing horrendous. Our PE teacher was a bit of tartar and I was hopeless at games! Sr MA was strict in RE but again nothing awful. Naybe I was just lucky!

In contrast to my own comparatively happy experience, DH went to a primary school in Trieste and for minor misdemeanours the nuns made them kneel in salt. How very sadistic was that!
