A friend has just become a grandmother for the first time at 74. I suppose this is becoming more common with women delaying motherhood but it seems late to me.
Friend is delighted of course.
When did you become a granny? I was 51.

I was 46 and felt really Young! I'm 59 now and feel really old ha ha??

There is a wide age range here for first grandchildren. Obviously the trend toward later motherhood has impacted on grandparents, I was quite happy to be a Nanny but not too sure about Great Nanny. Where did all the years go ?

I was 59 but my 60th birthday coincided with DGS1's christening. We had a long weekend of celebration. Unforgettable!

I was 59. I had my DC young, first at 22, so had hoped to be a young granny with plenty of energy.
My mother was 37 when I was born, if I had repeated the pattern she would hardly have had any time with her GC.
MIL died at 58 but had 9 GC.

I'm 59 and DD is 17, so probably won't make it to grannyhood.

My mother was 73 but died when DD was 2.

My daughter had twin girls when I was 55. They are now 10. I would have loved to have been a grandmother earlier but my daughter was 33 when they were born. I had her at 22. She had her career first I had mine when my child bearing days were over

Quite a lot of young grans here. I was 61 and 64 when mine arrived. Nearly 10 years down the line and I do feel my age yet they are still very young and even more energetic.

49 when first arrived - she's now 21. 71 when newest arrived 8 weeks ago (3 more in between!)

I was 51 when my first grandchild was born. She will be 30 this year. And age 53, 61 and 65 when the others were born.

I was 37, too young many may say, but boy have we had fun with our grandchildren, we took them skiing and taught them to swim and sail. My eldest gs made me a great grandmother at 57. My happiest days are those that I see, speak or text (& get a reply) any of my grandchildren.
Sadly although I’m not 60 until later this year, I’m in poor health with arthritis and Chronic pain, my own mother was still going on 20 mile hikes at 80! I’m unable to walk without pain so am I disappointed I was such a young mum not on your life I have a host of wonderful memories

I was 54. Still only got the one DGD. Would love to have some more before I’m too old to be any help.

I was 45 when my first grandchild was born and 65 when my first great grandchild arrived.
I was 24 when I had my daughter.

I was 41 when my eldest DGS was born and looked more like a mum than a grandmother. 5 years later I adopted a baby boy who was the sibling of the 3 children we were already adopting. He came to us at 2 days old. My youngest DGS is now 8 months old with many in between. Plus GGC number 7 due to arrive next month. I am 75. Some friends are like me with GGC and some only have very young grandchildren.

I was 53 when the twins arrived and two years later, their cousin who will have a brother or sister in November. I'll be 61 and have got the hang of being grandma now. I remember standing in a colleague 's office before ours were born looking at her grandchildren screensaver. I said miseraby, 'Don't think I'll ever be a grandma,' and a few months later, the twins appeared.

I had my eldest son at 20 but had to wait until I was 55 to be a grandmother.

pinkprincess Sat 22-Jun-19 16:48:09

I have a grandaughter living with me now she is 22 and a real test for a doting grandmother

MiniMoon Sat 22-Jun-19 16:49:18

I was 55. I have four grandchildren now. They are 12, 10, 9 and 6.

blondenana Sat 22-Jun-19 17:02:59

I was 38, lost track of how many now, and several GGC,
I was married at 17, big mistake as it turned out

Sofa Sat 22-Jun-19 18:04:11

Gonegirl Sat 22-Jun-19 18:59:49

I was 60 and 64 respectively when my two were born. Feel so old now that they're 17 and 13. Where is the time going? Sigh.

NfkDumpling Sat 22-Jun-19 19:17:32

We’d given up ever having grandchildren so downsized to a two bedroom house - then over the next five years we gained four! I was 61 when our first was born.

luluaugust Sat 22-Jun-19 19:55:55

I was 49 when first DGS arrived and 64 when last DGS arrived.

My GC are spread out, two grown up and four still children.
I still do a lot of childcare and wish my youngest daughter realised that I haven’t got the strength and energy now that I had for the first GC.
