Pet hate!

Oops, should have typed ' like to be called '. Sorry, but thought I should correct myself before anyone else does it for me!

Agree! And I can’t cope with Bubs for a baby.....or Fur Baby for a dog

I love being called chick, hun or babe. Why not?? A salesman called me babes recently. I was delighted. I am nearly 70.

I'd rather any of these three than the ageing/patronising "dear" or, worse still, "dearie"

Oh yes 'dear' yuk.

Anything but " dear or dearie " ! They're well played out now. Rather Hinge and Bracket phrases with visions of antimacassars and aspidistras.

At work I get called, love, sweetheart, babe, mate! And everything else you can imagine! Mostly it’s fine, but I have been known to say “and can you please not call me love” sometimes it’s so patronising!

Surely some of these are regional? I remember many years ago being called 'bab' by complete strangers and just thought it was local to where I was living. Don't think I have been called any of those for years, maybe just living somewhere different.

Yes definitely regional, which isn’t offensive at all, but hate being called sweetheart or love, by know all men!

Sara perhaps it is the tone which makes it offensive? Any patronising bloke would get short shrift from me!

My post lady, about half my age, calls me darling, but it sounds natural coming from her and doesn't offend me.

You could well be right nonnie, any sentence that begins “ ok sweetheart, just listen to me.....” sends my blood pressure through the roof! I quite like being called, love, or duck by some people, but absolutely never DEAR!

The only name I hate is “guys”. A young teacher at my last school used to call her class that, and it always grated!

Don't like "mate" much either, for the same reason, but don't mind the rest, depending on the tone used.

"Darling" by the girl in our local coffee shop, who says it in the kind of voice normally reserved for a small child. She doesn't say it to ALL customers, just older women. I also hate "bless" when I do something younger people deem as "sweet".

A girl at work calls everyone, darling, sweetie, says bless you my love, about 50 times a day! Actually called me ‘poppet ‘ today!
You’d think it would be irritating in the extreme, but she’s so genuine and kind, it seems alright

I don't give a tinker's cuss what anyone calls me if they mean well.

‘You guys’ is a real pet hate for me, especially when coming from salesmen or, even worse, SiL and stepGS. So patronising, as if He can’t be bothered to use our names.

I was called "hun" on facebook the other days. I think they were patronising me for making a comment they thought stupid. My pet hate is hearing pets referred to as fur babies.

My hairdresser calls me dear but as I am old enough to be her grandmother I don't mind.

Here in Scotland I love to be called " lass " as it is decades since I was one.

I'm in Devon and previously lived in Dorset. I just loved being called "Me lover" or "love," so nice. Once I was called "Dear" a bit too often by a workman and I finally responded with "Would you like a cup of tea, Sweetheart?" I felt really foolish saying that and have never said anything like it again.
What I hate most is saying something to a younger person, and they respond with "Aw, bless!" They only say this to older people.
