Is there anyone out there with no illnesses, issues or disabling problems and not on any meds?
It can be quite dispiriting to read so many threads which almost always contain health issues even when it's not the subject matter.

Gonegirl Fri 12-Apr-19 20:21:21

Perhaps it would be better not to turn this thread into a witch hunt against the original poster. hmm

M0nica Mon 15-Apr-19 17:40:03

Callistemon, all those others saying that posters on this thread are being smugplease can you explain to me why admitting that you have goodhealth is being smug? No one has gloried in it, simply stated a fact.

Should we instead lie in our teeth claim that we have all kinds of terrible diseases, that we are terminally ill or whatever. Why is someone who has health problems so morally superior to someone who doesnt't?

All of us are talking about how we are today, as would be the case for anyone from 0 - 120. Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. Children, teenagers, young old and middle age do not know what may hit them tomorrow. In the meanwhile I am truly thankful for what I have today.

The smug ones are the those who think themselves so morally superior that they can describe other people as smug.

Gonegirl Mon 15-Apr-19 18:02:49

It sounds smug. That's all.

Callistemon Mon 15-Apr-19 18:03:29

It was not me who introduced the word smug to the thread Monica, I merely quoted a proverb.

Callistemon Mon 15-Apr-19 18:05:03

Difficult to rise above cancer surely
But many do and are thankful (but never smug).

janeainsworth Mon 15-Apr-19 18:05:47

I’ve only just seen your thread gabriella and just wanted to say I’m flattered to be thought of as in the same class as MOnica whose posts I always read with interestsmile.
I’m 70 this year and apart from taking thyroxine I’m lucky to be in good health and very grateful too.

Gonegirl Mon 15-Apr-19 18:16:40

It was me. (who told people not to be so bloody smug)

The original post would make anyone angry.

MawBroonsback Mon 15-Apr-19 18:22:59

I do not think it is any virtue but sheer good luck - with the genes, with life, with one’s circumstances- if one is free of ailments.
I take nothing at all and although I know I am not particularly fit for instance I couldn’t run for a bus to save my life, I am lucky to be extremely healthy.
But I recognise that life can turn on a sixpence so I neither feel the urge to brag or indeed to plead anything else at my age (71)
GG although she has not expressed it as such does have a point and that is the “organ recital” when two or more elderly people get together and often regale each other with being “under” the Doctor/hospital etc.
Young people do not do this so beware, it is very ageing!
When my late DH was asked how he was, he invariably replied “Not too bad thank you” because a rundown of all that he actually had wrong with him would have sent any enquirer running screaming for the hills!

Callistemon Mon 15-Apr-19 18:24:55

It can be quite dispiriting to read so many threads which almost always contain health issues

You could:
not read those threads about health issues
not read posts about health issues if they are brought up on another thread
try a forum for young people

Easy peasy

dragonfly46 Mon 15-Apr-19 18:33:23

I think it is time this thread was laid to rest!

grannyrebel99 Mon 15-Apr-19 18:42:25

Keep taking the tablets and carry on is my motto!

MawBroonsback Mon 15-Apr-19 18:43:01

Hear, hear dragonfly!

Gonegirl Mon 15-Apr-19 19:32:02

I don't see anything wrong with elderly people discussing their ailments together. Why not? Who is it going to hurt? As for being "ageing", we are old. (Well I am. I get a free telly licence so I must be)

M0nica Mon 15-Apr-19 21:38:48

If people with ailments and health problems want to talk about them I think that is fine. Talking to others is a good way of dealing with difficult things

If people with good health want to now and again discuss that, why not? We have seen the opprobrium such a suggestion rises from those less fortunate

As Calistemon says: (if you do not like threads discussing health issues) You could: not read those threads about health issues, not read posts about health issues if they are brought up on another thread, try a forum for young people (although what age has to do with it eleudes me, us number of us are well into our 70s)

I completely agree with her and would say the same to those who do not like reading threads about those who are fortunate to have good health. If you don't like them, don't read them.

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

M0nica Mon 15-Apr-19 21:41:52

Gonegirl, you deciding some thing sounds smug, doesn't mean it was.

Could you suggest a wording that doesn't sound smug?

janeaisnworth I always turn to our posts with itnerest and respect.

GabriellaG54 Tue 16-Apr-19 00:11:45

GrannyGravy
So you're a 'babe' then.
You youngsters make me sick...???

GabriellaG54 Tue 16-Apr-19 00:24:24

Gonegirl
Really??
I thought that I was a bit OTT buying it but I also bought a Russian divers watch which has a removeable "cage' over the face.
It was part of a consignment for the Russian Navy (previously thought lost) made before the cold war, hence the letters CCCP which are 2 letters either side of the number 6.
It's in a box with all the authentic paperwork written and stamped in Russian.
I collect watches as they don't take up much room, mostly men's as they re-sell more easily for higher prices.

GabriellaG54 Tue 16-Apr-19 00:37:32

Now now girls, I'm not 'getting at' ladies with health problems, merely wondering if those who don't take regular meds put it down to their lifestyle, diets (and by that I mean choice of food) genes or something else.
Of course no-one knows if or when we may be struck with an illness but many if you seem to manage to live happy, fulfilling lives regardless of operations or debilitating conditions and that is IMO, testament to women's doggedness and fortitude.
Here's to all of us ??? may we live long and prosper.
(I've heard those words before...somewhere)

GabriellaG54 Tue 16-Apr-19 00:46:03

Well, I honestly (and I don't do false flattery) would never ever have guessed you were that age janeainsworth
I imagined you to be in your 80s...?

No...not really. ?? You know I'm only kidding as I've seen your 2 photos.
I would have said early 50s tops, unless you've had 'work' done ?which would account for the loss of almost 20 years. ?

janeainsworth Tue 16-Apr-19 02:09:27

‘Work’ done Gabriella?
The very suggestion shockgrin

GabriellaG54 Tue 16-Apr-19 02:26:00

*organ recital* ?? Now that's a gem Mawbroonsback.
Your DH returned that enquiry very neatly and politely and, after seeing his photo, I would expect no less.
I hope you're coping a bit better. ?

GabriellaG54 Tue 16-Apr-19 02:29:37

Well, it must be due to having a very happy marriage...wink that's all I can say.
Love, is a many splendoured thing...tra la la ??

M0nica Tue 16-Apr-19 06:44:00

Gonegirl The answer is undoubtedly genes because genes influence things like food preferences, and many other aspects of personality and lifestyle.

I come from healthy long-lived family. My father was one of eleven children. Average life span: 88 years, One still surviving at 92, clear in mind, living independently and still driving locally. Dementia: only 1, he and his wife spent many years in care, but otherwise only one other was in a nursing home for the last few months of pancreatic cancer. Always physically active, generally not prone to gain weight. I was brought up on a diet high in fruit and veg because my mother did not like meat. How much of nurture is nature is open for discussion.

I appreciate my good fortune. I have a DH who had to start taking medication at 40.

Anja Tue 16-Apr-19 07:13:32

Interesting insights reading through this thread, also noticing that some people are awake and posting in the early hours.

NotAGran55 Tue 16-Apr-19 07:32:25

I have no medical problems thankfully . So much so that at 60 I received a letter from my GP practice inviting me in for a health MOT because they never see me !
They found nothing wrong other than overweight which I have now addressed by losing 35 lb last year by cutting out all processed foods , only eating foods cooked from scratch , and following the principles from Dr Michael Moseley’s book The Clever Guts Diet .
