Reading through a recent thread about wedding music prompted me to ask what was the music/song that you had your first dance to? Mine was Third Finger, Left Hand. Still makes me want to dance all these years latersmile

We may not have had any dancing at the wedding but we had organ music at the service. It was a small low key service, but we both love classical music so we had an organist and chose the music with care.

I was married 50 years ago today. No music and thank God no dancing. It was a painful miserable affair, as arranged by my mother and I knew I was making a terrible mistake.

I'm interested to see that people had discos in the 70s as we got married in 1981 and didn't even think of an evening do! We left after the reception and a lot of my parents local friends went back to their house and had a nice social evening. My MiL retired to her hotel room with a migraine!!!

No dance. Small-ish summer wedding, reception at home, lovely sunny day in my folks' garden, small marquee for the food. Plenty of guests still there when dh and I dragged ourselves away after 7 hours!

Grumpy old bag alert, but I dread the incredibly loud, banging music that always seems to follow weddings nowadays - usually in the same room where people trying to chat can't hear themselves think. Why does it have to be so LOUD??
A SiL who I rarely see, and I, once had to go outside - into drizzle! - in order to have any sort of conversation.

Married in 1964, I can't remember that detail, but it lasted and we're still
as happy as two comfortable old shoes, so I don't think it's important now.

We married in 1975. No first dance as we had our reception in my parents house. To be honest we didn’t consider it a ‘thing’ to do. I didn’t throw my bouquet either, it was placed on my Grandmother’s grave the next day.
We did have a first dance at our Ruby wedding party though, Barry White - You’re my first, my last, my everything (our song) ❤️

I got married 1970, 49 years this year. We danced to Wedding Bell Blues. The chorus line was wanna marry you Bill, which wasn’t DH name!!

We were married in 1968 had a band can’t remember if we had a song, just think they played a waltz of some sort.

We had to pay for our own wedding and couldn't afford a sit-down meal but had a buffet, a bar run by family & friends, a DJ and a good old East End knees up. Our first dance was 'Third Finger Left Hand' by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. A wonderful 50 years ago next year.

Shizam Fri 05-Apr-19 18:09:56

No dancing at mine either. I had a harpist playing though!

Quiet wedding, meal after, no music but DD had At Last every time I hear it I am taken back to a wonderful celebration nearly 4 years ago

Thirdinline Fri 05-Apr-19 17:06:55

@36MO I thought "If you leave me now" was by Chicago?

@Terri823 was it 3rd time lucky? I love that song!

Thirdinline Fri 05-Apr-19 17:04:55

I don't think "first dance" was a thing back in '94 when we got married, but ours would have been an eightsome reel or some such, along with all the other guests, as our reception was a Ceilidh.

We were married in 1972,and like many others,we left after the reception to go on honeymoon,no music,,etc, but we had a lovely meal.... ,that marriage failed after 20yrs,we grew apart, but for the last 13yrs i have been married to a most wonderful
hubby,,we had a registry office ceremony, then a reception/party,and the first dance was Rod Stewart, ...Have i told you lately that I love you ,

Terri823 Fri 05-Apr-19 14:50:15

Three times a lady - I was his third wife !

36MO Fri 05-Apr-19 14:36:34

'If you leave me now" by the commodores. OH chose it, married in 1980.

Bellasnana Fri 05-Apr-19 14:24:48

Ours was a registry office wedding as well, no party afterwards. Had to get back to feed DD2 who was four months old and wouldn’t take a bottle. DD1 was 2.

‘Our song’ was also Lady by Kenny Rogers. We loved each other very much and had 35 happy years together before he died four years ago, aged 69. I never regretted not having a white wedding.

Hot Hot Hot - Buster Poindexter.......... in an Open Air Club on the beautiful island of Antigua, wonderful memories.

David1968 Fri 05-Apr-19 14:18:21

No dance for us, either. Simply "a bit of a do" at our house before we set off on a (package holiday) one-week honeymoon. Still happy together after 36 years.

Gonegirl Fri 05-Apr-19 14:14:08

Bijou that is such a lovely post. So atmospheric. flowers

alchemilla Fri 05-Apr-19 14:11:28

Isn't a first dance like the old Snowball - couple dance for a few minutes then break up to invite next couple in and so on? The one I'm not so keen on is the US father/daughter dance after which the bridegroom takes over. Or anything overcooked.

stillabitfit Fri 05-Apr-19 13:43:41

Only one Heart by Jimmy Nail, and we had a few waltzing lessons in preparation! Married in 95 celebrating our first ten years of home ownership. The dressmaker put a little loop in for me to hold up my dress elegantly. Must be due another party I think.
