The Knife Angel

I went to see the Knife Angel today in Coventry and whilst I can understand how gillybob feels and what gonegirl is saying, the feeling I got was one of both peace and sadness. I read the Angels face as full of sad compassion, but I'm sure everyone sees things in a different way. Admittedly, the few times I have been to the cathedral area I always get this strange peaceful and quiet feeling, even though it is in the middle of a very busy place, so that may not have been anything to do with the Angel. Very poignant to see the flowers and other items around the base, in memory of some of the victims of knife crime.

Actually, yes to both your points Gonegirl it is amazing and horrific all at once.
It needs to be seen though by teenagers, so should be displayed in places where they will see it.

And it smacks of Game of Thrones.

I think it could have the opposite effect to the one desired. It seems to me to be 'bigging up' knife crime.

I hope it doesn't end up on a plinth in Trafalgar Square. The world already knows we have this problem, without us calling tourists' attention to it! It's hardly something to be proud of.

Thanks for the link to the makers, Mick. We have a metalworker here who creates amazing sculptures from cutlery and cast off metal materials. These people have wonderful imagination to be able to envisage these works and then produce them. I don’t find Knife Angel half as scary as Damien Hirst’s statue of St Bartholomew, which is both beautiful and deeply shocking.

What a thought provoking work of art. Please let it have the desired effect.

I see both sides and it’s really only for adults but you can’t really censor a statue.

I saw a FB post with 2 young police officers staring up at it. I think it’s an amazing moving and terrible statue all in one.

I couldn't be doing with that sort of sculpture either.

I was beginning to think it was just me Squiffy. I really wouldn't want my grandchildren to see this "monster" so I hope it stays wherever it is. . It's enough to give them nightmares. Like you I can't get the horrible image out of my head.

I feel the same as you gilly. Once the image is in your head it won't go away. I suppose that's the point really! - but I'd rather not see it.

I get what is behind it and what is stands for but I can't help thinking its very creepy and the stuff of nightmares. In fact I think it could be a character in a twisted horror film . Hope it doesn't come anywhere in the NE, I really don't want my DGC to see it.

Its amazing isn't it. I saw it on TV. They said it was bidding for the vacant plinth in Trafalgar Square which I think would be very appropriate.

If you are ever in the area The British Iron Works is well worth a visit.
We took our 2 small grandsons who loved the over sized Animals made from metal and the tea room is also very interesting.

My DH and I were very impressed with the Knife Angel and the sentiment behind it.

It’s amazing. I hope we will see it here, in the home of knives and cutlery, and I’m sure that wherever it goes, it will be thought provoking, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds it heartbreaking that no-one seems to have an answer to the burgeoning knife crime problem.

Thank you for sharing this as I doubt it will come to Norwich. I looked up photos of it and you’re right its a very moving sculpture.

It was originally located near Oswestry at the Black Country place which was a garden centre just off the A5 towards Shrewsbury.
