Strange baby names

Friend of my daughter's is to call her baby girl Desire (poor wee thing)

I know of an Ishmael and a darling little girl called Delilah

We have several names here which commemorate military relatives;
Alamein is very popular.

I believe there's an American politician called 'Newt' - you cannot get weirder than that!

I'm so impressed that you can remember all your grandchildren's names, HellsBells!

He's actually Newton Leroy Gingrich BradfordLass and perhaps newts are called something else in the States

But at least you remember him

Remember DM talking of a family she knew when young. All had fancy names for the time, but I can only remember Queen Victoria Maud and Cyril Reuben Claude Jack. Also a few Horace's around - not one you hear much now.

Is anyone called Queenie these days?

I hope there are no Queenies on here, but I don't like it.

I had a friend whose mum had delusions of grandeur. She called her daughter Anne Elizabeth Margaret after the royals.

My grand mother was called Queenie. Arrrgh! Can’t remember if she liked it or not. My darling mother was called Pearl, she hated it, bit I know a baby called Pearl.

As a teacher - the most ludicrous name I came across was " La - a ." Pronounced........... Ladasha.!!!

My son knows two young sisters called Pearl and Emerald.

I had an Uncle Rex so that name is very familiar to me, and doesn’t make me think of dogs!

I’m absolutely with you Jamila1108. Don’t apologise! Meant to say my granddaughter was very nearly called Maud, shudder, but fortunately it sounded wrong with their surname of Moore. They decided on Kitty, which I’m very happy with. I was told in no uncertain terms it wasn’t my baby when I vetoed names which I guess is fair enough. You’re never going to please everyone.

My mother bless her was great at rubbishing name suggestions. I fancied Tiffany for a girl. ,"oh no she will be called Tiffy" another pregnancy and we fancied Todd. "Oh no he will end up being called Sweeney. You cant call him Todd"
I dont know what she would make of a friend calling her baby Avery recently. I expect it would be fancy calling a baby after a company that makes scales. Although I do know of friends with daughters and granddaughters with that name in the USA. So not so unusual.
My grandson and wife named their baby Lucas which I thought was unusual. I have since heard that name used a lot. My latest and I expect last DGS has a very unusual name Nikanor but known as Nik jut as his brothers are called shortened versions of their names.

My grandson is Wren. I cringe every time I have to tell anybody.
My husband has a new grandson called Lynk. I think it's ridiculous.
While researching my family tree I found a man called Masser, and twin girls called Loxie and Doxie.
My husband had an uncle called Son.

My mum had a schoolfriend called Isa Mess

I called my daughter alice after my grandmother middle name. she was meant to be called laura after laura ingalls wilder .but she didn't look like a laura .so my mum said how about alice.. little did we know but my mums birth mothers name was also alice......... small world huh ?

strange names though .heard a boy called power. and another called north..

My two daughters...38 and 42 have never met or heard of anyone with their names. Today at work (a department store) a lady called her son...Apollo. I commented on his lovely unusual name. She said he had a twin...Zandor. Lovely names... My grandchildren all have unusual names.....

Actually I quite like Maud, especially spelt with an 'e' (Maude) which means that no-one would spell it correctly.

Our beautiful 4yr old granddaughter is called Ethel and we love it.

I am aware that Sydney and Adelaide have been around for years and one of my own relatives was an Adelaide whose own parents never moved more than a few miles from their home but those
Adelaide the city was named after a Queen and has been a popular name for girls for a very long time.
I know an Adelaide.

Sydney the city was named after Viscount Sydney and the name Sydney (or Sidney) was used by Dickens for one of his characters.

So the places were named after people, not vice versa.

Ah, Maud... Had we been blessed with any DGD the first one was destined to be Maud. I was agin it at first, and was trying oh so casually to push Matilda as an alternative (“did you know Maud is a short form of Matilda”, etc, dropped casually into the conversation). I actually quite like it now, but it wouldn’t suit any of the DGS.

I tried that tactic.
"Oh, I'm reading a book and the woman has just named her baby Guy; isn't that a nice name for a little guy, and of course, it would be quite unusual now".
It didn't work.

I know of a Parsley. (Goes well with Celery ?), Buzz, Beck (boy), Trey, Zane, Slater, Puffin (girl), Otter and 2 Nelsons ......
One of my grandsons is named John. Phew!
