Strange baby names

Once knew a Gordon Bennett. What were his parents thinking?

Greyduster - We have neighbours with a son around 8 I think, called Lysander. Rather like it.

I was given an really unusual name in the late 1940s, which has never been fashionable. It's quite a pretty name and I have been happy to be 'unique'. I have quite a lot of namesakes in the USA but have never heard of one in the UK. Importantly it has no other meaning as far as I know.

My paternal grandmother, born in Dublin in the 1870s, was christened Rose Annie. She didn’t like having a diminutive as a name, and always used Rose Anne instead, Then she named her daughter Bessie! Bessie insisted on being called Elizabeth, but then called her son Tony. Tony insists on being called Anthony. His daughter has a name that is not a diminutive, so the cycle has ended at last.

After DD got her job she was told they had put her on the interview list as they wanted to see what someone with her name looked like!

My gorgeous granddaughter is called Elsie. I think it’s a lovely name. By contrast my other daughter worked on a neonatal ward and a mum wanted to name her baby after Tiger Woods but misspelled it and called him Tigger. Made me smile

What I find hard to understand is why childrens are given made up names. Not even a word but bits of words joined to make a name. Traditional names usually have a meaning but now with the made up names they will mean nothing. I'm sure it is Sweden that allows only certain names to be used; the sound of some made up names here makes me think that would be useful to apply here.

I knew a Tiger who must have been born about 1920. Maybe it was a nickname.
Do you think our parents and DGP found naming their offspring hard?
In Scotland there's the naming pattern: 1st son after paternal GF, 1st daughter after maternal GM. 2nd son after maternal GF and so on. Until you get to about #7 and you run out of family names. Then you honour the minister who baptised them or a godparent.
It makes for interesting genealogy with many cousins sharing names.
My DF had an unusual name. I wish I'd known him and his parents. I'd have questions for them.

I know a little lad called Rex. I have got used to his name now, but for a long time all I could think of was a hairy four-legged friend!

4allweknow, I'm pretty sure that Greece only allows certain names, I think of saints. At least I'm pretty sure that was the case some time ago.

Happy I know a Rex too. I thought the same when his GM told me.

A friend's son was called Guy. His friends at primary school, proudly learning to read phonetically, thought his name was Gooey.

I remember Clint Walker in Cheyenne. It was always hard to picture a toddler running round in nappies with a dummy being called Cheyenne.

I am surprised that teachers hadn't come across the name Persephone. Wonder where they went to school.

Edith is a classic name, not just Victorian/Edwardian.

Edith of Wessex, born 1825, was the wife of Edward the Confessor and crowned Queen. She is buried in Westminster Abbey.

I know two young babies called Rupert and I am not sure I like the name but everyone to their own.

I'm not sure about this trend of copying what celebrities call their children. Someone I know has called their daughter Harper after the Beckham's girl. When I was shopping recently I heard someone calling their son Brooklyn.

I know of a family with an Andromeda, Mercutio and D'Artagnan (spelt Dartanion). Very unusual! My GSs are Lucius & Troy, both of which I like. DD is one of the many Hannahs born 35 years ago & DS blazed a trail as we named him Joshua before it became fashionable - MIL was horrified by it!

There must be a few Greek history buffs around, Glamma; DH once served with an officer who’s son was called Hector, and we also know a Darius.

Two of my grandchildren are friends with a brother and sister. Cirrus and Snow. Don’t think the parents are meteorologists.

I think they will find it difficult to register a child with the name ‘Lucifer’. Registrars do have guidelines!

A local person named her oldest daughter Ebony, she's a white child, bit like calling a black child Blanche ! She has a younger sister called Trinity , I asked if she was the youngest of three and just got a blank look. What did I expect when you call your children idiotic names? I remember discussing names when my first granddaughter was due . I suggested imagining a teacher calling out her name in a playground . If everyone either looks aghast or laughs, it's a stupid name.
