Just writing a post in another subject about my mum and Mother's Day did just that, my eyes prickled and the tears formed. If you had a loving mother and father it doesn't matter how old you are you still miss them even after so many years of their deaths.

I'm crying as I type this. My mum died 10 years ago, she had dementia and was in a home but I wasn't with her when she died. I'd been with her the evening before and told her how much I loved her but I will always regret that she died alone.

It used to be almost impossible to make me cry. Now I only have to see a photo of a kitten and I'm off. Embarrassing. I can't seem to tell a story that's the slightest bit emotional before I'm off and can't get the words out. And I only have to hear someone mention giving birth or see it on tv and I'm in floods of tears. What's happened to me! I've gone soft! shock

I lost my Mum to cancer when I was 8 so I have very few memories. Was so envious of my teenage friends moaning about their mothers.

My dear old mum has been very ill for sometime and I suspect this will be our last Mother’s Day. She has been very difficult for the last 8 years since dad died and in a way I lost her then too. She hasn’t been able to cope without him and she gave up being our mum and so began the role reversal of child/carer, carer/child, which happens to many of us. I’m going to make Mother’s Day a joyous day of celebration of the the loving, wise incredible woman who I have had as my mum for 60 plus years and not the shell of the woman she has become.

At our service this morning the minister told of a woman who had not spoken to her father for years following a difference of opinion. She then learnt he had died and she cried.
A friend asked her if she was crying because her father had died. She replied, " No, I am crying because it is now too late to put right the disagreement that caused us to fall out in the first place."
This really brought home a salutary lesson to me.

Anything to do with animals. Can't watch:
- Black Beauty
- Ring of Bright Water
- The Incredible Journey
- Anything Lassie related
- Most wildlife progs, esp. Attenborough who seems to revel in gore
- Those adverts for animal charities on satellite channels

Yes. Gonegirl. I have no tears left which is terribly frustrating when I have had good reason to weep. I have a thing called Sjogren's syndrome which causes (among other things) dry eyes and a dry mouth - and sometimes great exhaustion. Oddly enough, the tennis player, Venus Willliams has this affliction. I don't know how she has the energy to play nowadays. Maybe her rheumatologist has better remedies than mine!

Yesterday I read this story aloud to my husband and had to really concentrate to stop myself from breaking down as I did so. It was such a simple gesture, but the urge to reach out is one I really relate to; I had to go and visit my muslim (foster) boys just for some shared reassurance.

Tears sprang to my eyes yesterday. The rugby players came onto the pitch and one was holding a little boy's hand. The boy was disabled and was trying so hard to walk. Brave children make me so emotional.

I get emotional whenever I hear Hans-Dietrich Genscher's announcement at the Embassy in Budapest. Welling up now just mentioning it.

On a similar subject, Billy Joel's song Leningrad never fails to reduce me to tears.

We are lucky to have spent our lives in peace times. Not sure how much longer it can last.

Mother's Day is bittersweet to me. I'm so blessed to still have my mum at age 91 to see, hug, tell her I love her and send a card to. On the other hand my son is not here to give me a card and a big hug and to tell me he loves me. I lost him to cancer age 26 and am devastated.

I still miss my mum, who died in 1995. I really struggled with Mothering Sunday, seeing all the displays in the shops and not having a mum to buy for. She always used to send me a card on Mothering Sunday, I thought she was mad, but she signed it 'from one mum to another'. When my grandchildren arrived, I started buying cards for DD and DDIls, writing the same message in them. I am sure they think I am mad too, but it means I can go into cards shops around this time with a reason, it eases the pain to think mum's gesture is being carried on.

I cry so easily it is embarrassing. But my dear dad was exactly the same.
Just reading this this thread has made me have tears in my eyes. No sad tv programmes for me either. I am concerned to read that you get more emotional as you age. Good grief - I don't like the sound of that! shock

Gonegirl Sun 17-Mar-19 12:26:21

I'm sendin a card and some flowers to my daughter for Mothering Sunday telling her she's a great mum.

travelsafar Sun 17-Mar-19 12:27:20

Wish we had a sister day. I love my sister with all my heart and can't bear to think that one day one of us will be without the other. We do so much together and always kiss and have a cuddle when we meet. Feel so blessed that we live in the same town and can get to each other in 10 mins.

Grandma70s Sun 17-Mar-19 12:40:29

I can’t think about my nephew’s premature birth and desperate struggle to live without crying. He did live, I’m glad to say, and is now a father himself.

Jenny Agutter in The Railway Children.

Most Schubert songs.

The sound of a really good boy treble. I shed a lot of tears over Aled Jones in the 1980s!

There are parts of books that always trigger tears. Matthew’s death in Anne of Green Gables is one.

Buttercups en masse, or indeed most wild flowers in profusion. That’s nostalgia for my childhood when ther seemed to be so many more wild flowers.

kathsue Sun 17-Mar-19 12:41:01

DGS made me cry last night when he told me he couldn't remember his life before he came to live with me, when his Mum died. He was 4 at the time.
I don't like Mothers' day. It feels like it's emphasising that neither of us have a mother now and I don't have a daughter.

sodapop Sun 17-Mar-19 12:50:16

I find I cry much more easily now I am older. The other frustrating thing is that I cry when I'm angry, takes the edge right off the cutting remark I'm about to make.

aggie Sun 17-Mar-19 13:01:28

I held my Husbands hand as he died and I was reciting the "Hail Mary" , now I can't say it without a lump in my throat and tears flow

Sheilasue Sun 17-Mar-19 13:03:27

Certain things remind me of my son, he loved a roast beef dinner. My dear mum and dad and all the lovely memories I have of them. Hope my son is having a lovely time with them up in heaven.

red1 Sun 17-Mar-19 13:09:50

too many things, but then ive thin skin, but I wouldn't have it any other way

rosecarmel Sun 17-Mar-19 13:18:34

Gonegirl Yes - Over the years have experienced very lengthy periods when tears just wouldn't come but when they did they came all at once, as though a dam broke-

fairisle Sun 17-Mar-19 13:23:11

I embarrass myself by shedding a few tears(of joy) when i`m on the train going on holiday,i want to go on holiday and i like where i live but it`s the thought of coming back to everyday life.

merlotgran Sun 17-Mar-19 13:31:41

The advert where the little girl playing football and talking her blind dad through the game brings tears to my eyes.

I'm dreading mother's day this year. sad

Auntieflo Sun 17-Mar-19 13:36:44

Thank you all for your lovely stories. I found that once I became a mum, I got very emotional.
Now there are certains hymns we sing, or music DH plays, that make me feel very teary.
Chimera, I felt so sad that your daughters have become so distant, but how lucky you are to still have your mum.
The lovely idea of sending a card to a daughter, from one mum to another, is one I shall pinch in a couple of weeks.
Thanks for sharing everyone.
