Clichés past their sell-by date

I was taking out a girl and her father said to me. Young man, I never want to reply to my daughter with these words:
"You are pregnant? Charming, bloody charming!"

The girl quip at the time was: "My mother will not like it."
To which the boy replied: "Your mother's not getting it."

My dad always used to say "dirty A rab" when we hadn't kept ourselves or something clean enough. I never thought much of it until I said it to my son, when he was about 15ish. He looked so shocked and said..." Mum, you can't say that! " I then realized what a dredful expression it was and have never used it since, but what we used to say in the 60's doesn't really bear thinking about now, does it.

Riverwalk "I dislike 'fell pregnant' - it's used on GN from time to time". That is an expression which has always made me smile, did the woman fall over and land on a man's penis!!

My parents would talk about a certain young girl as being "no better than she ought to be"

Hmm, I had lots of b/fs and was engaged twice before meeting my husband and he was the first to 'know' me. I was 23 when we married and it lasted for 39 years and 8 months.
We're now good friends. Three of my AC were married before living with their spouses.

Living 'Over the brush' was a one time saying if you co-habited before marriage.

I know a lady - now in her 70's, who got unexpectedly pregnant from 'heavy petting' (?), just months before her planned big wedding. It was cancelled, her father refused to pay for it, and she and her fiance had a small wedding, no wedding dress. Her father had the cheek to ask her fiance, baby's father, if he still wanted to marry her, and he would understand if she didn't as she was spoiled goods (or words to that effect)! Still gobsmacks me even now! Caused no end of resentment and issues over the years.

Not a cliché, but still use of an old word. When my widowed sil eventually ventured back into the world of ‘dating’ my fil would say she was out with one of her ‘paramours’!

During my first pregnancy (married!) I was complaining about migraines. My dear auntie asked me if it was a new thing, or if I had suffered before I 'fell wrong!' Fell wrong?

Before you had "a bun in the oven" in other words!!

Make an honest woman of her - outdated in my view.
This too shall pass - yes, it does but I dislike this phrase.
Life goes on - said to me on the my first day back at work after my husband died - again true but the timing could have been more tactful.

I think more people are "living in sin" these days than getting married, it doesnt sound as bad as "living with my partner" which everyone seems to be doing, I am sure youngsters have never heard that expression "living in sin" and why should they!

Just remembered something my dear grannie used to say - “it’s her poorly times” - meaning the girl was having her period!

No smoke without fire is irritating because it can lead to people being very judgmental on the basis of gossip. When people use it I always think 'I hope you are never on a Jury'.

Having read your comment to 'feeling ashamed for not teaching your ninety years old FIl any better' what leads you to believe it was your responsibility in the first place ?Clearly the person is old enough to be your parent.So respect him allowing him to decide and make his own choice and unless these be of a racist nature , cause offence or harm, and although you may not approve/be to your taste/liking ,then it is not/was /or has been your responsibility.

The expression ‘past its sell-by date’ when used to refer to anything other than food, is a cliche well past its sell-by date.

Best before date?

gillybob I "had to get married" at 18 - we celebrate 49 years together on Thursday.

Don’t know if it’s a cliche or just my mum but when I had my first period my mum thrust an st at me and said you have the curse now and it will be for life, don’t talk about it.
I was terrified and thought I had done something awful to get cursed

Girls were asking for trouble if they wore clothes that some thought inappropriate! Presumably this means that boys are weak and have no self control.

I always think of Les Dawson & Roy Barraclough with these sayings. " She's had everything taken away" said in hushed tones. It's women's troubles is another one.
All the jargon ones are annoying - blue sky thinking, pushing the envelope, going forward is a new one which is irritating.

My auntie described a relative as has having a whale of a time flying her kite about. Sounded fun.

I think it means that "boys will be boys" and no one really expects them to learn self-control. Especially if girls who are "no better than they should be" flaunt themselves in public.

I “kept myself pure” for marriage..... I needn’t have bothered ...I realised that sex is no big deal...and brought my daughter up to think differently. . . But Just to protect herself from diseases and pregnancy...but otherwise to enjoy herself ....she has.
