Interested to know others opinion. Recently pictures of various late celebrities have been appearing on my fb pages, accompanied by messages related to mental health issues. Some of these celebrities have died due to drug/alcohol addictions. I can't help feeling we have double standards. When someone well know dies under those circumstances we seem to ooze sympathy. Yet when we see/hear/read about ordinary, unknown, drug addicts we seem to have much less sympathy. I have heard people discussing the 'zombie drug' users. Haven't once heard anyone say 'poor thing, he must have mental health issues'. And do people think drug addiction is caused by mental health issues, or just a lifestyle choice? Or is that simplifying it too much? Interested to know where peoples' sympathies lie.
Before anyone misunderstands me, can I please say that I 100% back the need for more mental health support, and I do consider it a serious issue which is particularly worrying with regards to our young people. I'm not in any way minimising the seriousness of it.
