Favourite hymn

Eternal Father - it's the Naval Hymn, witzend, and it was played at my father's funeral too.

It was a point of honour at our school to absolutely belt out hymns. We had church every morning so lots of practice. An 'old girls' reunion a few years back saw us all back in the same church. Well, us old girls raised the roof. The young clergyman taking the service must have had the fright of his life! Happy memories.

I couldn't narrow it down to just one, I'm afraid, and there will be others I love, too.

For years I had my little Carey Bonner hymn book and knew every hymn off by heart. I wish I knew what happened to that little book.
My dad's favourite was The Day Thou Gavest which remains to be a much loved hymn after all these years.

I have so many favourites it's hard to pick out a firm favourite. When I survey the Wondrous Cross would be appropriate for this time of the year .

The words are very calming I think, even to non Christians.

"Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm.

Witzend - that was my dad's favourite too. He was in the navy in the war which explains it I guess. We had it at his funeral - I can't listen to it without shedding a tear!

Oh, and I'm not Welsh, but I do love Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer - esp. when sung by so many lusty voices at rugby matches!

I sometimes think I should go to church - I never do except for weddings/funerals/carol service - just for the hymn singing - as long as they're good old ones to the 'right' tunes.

I reckon I must have about 20 or so of these filed away in my brain with most of the words still there!

The current conductor tends to go for some very high Anglian hymns to pad out a program.

Some of them are incomprehensible to me.

Anniebach clearly knows which ones I mean.

I went to a Methodist church Sunday school aged 11 and this hymn moved me then as it does now.

Oh I've just remembered another couple of hymns that were such favourites when I was a child!

You can tell I was raised as a Catholic, can't you?

So many I love and it's so difficult to choose.

Love divine and
Praise my soul were our wedding hymns, and I had Love Divine played at DH's funeral.

I also love The day thou gavest Lord is ended.

I was brought Methodist and have many memories of singing in the chapel choir from the Methodist hymnbook.

So many great hymns here. I was brought up in the Methodist church/Chapel. Anything written by John Wesley of course.
