How to explain the inexplicable

Event One:
I could not find my spare keys. They normally live in a drawer but I vaguely remembered putting them in my handbag a while before. It's not a large bag: 2 compartments a zipped pocket on both outsides.
So I searched it - I took everything out, I shook the bag, felt inside and out - nothing.
No one, ever has access to my bag but me.
This week I had spare keys cut.
The next day, when dipping in one of the outside zipped pockets of my bag for my regular keys - there were the spares; keys I hadn't seen for a month. And I dip into that pocket most days, before locking my door!

That pocket only ever holds my regular keys which have a jewelled heart keyring.

The spares are on a pretty big key-ring too, one which includes an old-fashioned policeman's wooden truncheon, mini but over 10cm long, not easy to miss. How on earth did they get there?

Event Two:
My daughter in law was looking for a vital form. She searched the only drawer where forms are kept - so did I, in despair when she was so upset. No form.
We broke for a cup of coffee and she said, 'I'll just have to send for a copy but what a hassle.'

She went back to get writing pad and envelope, gave a cry at the door and called me to come quick. There was the form in the middle of the bed, in full view.

I am, as they say, gobsmacked. What's going on here?
Down-to-earth Yorkshire women like me do not have airy-fairy experiences, but how to explain this.

Hand on heart, this is not a wind up it's actually quite scary.

Has anyone else had similar experiences or am I genuinely going mad (along with my dil)

petra I have an ornament that turns to "look" out of the window, maybe the doll is the same!!

I have row of my childhood Wade Noddy et al on a shelf in a glass fronted cupboard. Big Ears and only Big Ears moves, and turns to face the window. A while ago I moved the ornaments to a different shelf and yes, after a while Big Ears is facing the window again. I have put it down to the ornament having a "wobbly bottom" and the vibrations of people walking across the floor making it move....but who knows!!

This is a known phenomenon. It happened to me and my mother too several years ago. I took one of my favorite rings off, and put it on the recessed lid of my teasmade like I usually did. The next day I went to wear it or put it away properly (can't remember which now) and it was gone. Obviously I looked everywhere, and I even suspected one of my school age children who was going through a phase of "borrowing without asking". At the same time, my mother had a very well hidden place for her more valuable jewellery which required lifting flooring and using a screwdriver to access. She had gone to retrieve a piece and found it and several others from there missing. She phoned to tell me and I'd not even mentioned my ring at the time. Then we compared notes and of course started wondering about all the people we knew. But the thing was it was only she and I who knew that place - she'd told me so if she died at least one person would know to get the stuff out of there.

Anyway some weeks went by and I was in bed one night reading, bedroom door shut, no one else in the room, and I heard a clatter coming from the teasmade. I went over to it and there was the ring exactly where I had left it all that time ago. I immediately phoned my mother and told her to check her place, I said I think your jewellery will be back now. And it was. And she had been watching the spot really carefully all that time in case the "thief" returned for more - no one had been near it.

Another time, my father lost his favorite lighter at the caravan site we'd been staying at. It didn't have any identifying features or an address on it. We think it was lost in long grass. Anyway some years later there was a clattering coming from the hallway (it was a lino floor) and upon investigation there was the lighter lying in the middle of the floor - a long way from the letterbox so unlikely to have been just posted through it and anyway no one would have known where to take it to.

If my mother ever lost an item, she would say ’pin the devil’ and the missing thing would always be found.
I don’t believe in magic or mysticism, but I’ve tried her trick several times in desperation, and it’s never failed yet!

Some years ago my daughter asked me to keep the key to her safe. I put it in a drawer. Then she needed it back as there was something very important needed for her work. I searched that drawer over and over, and tipped everything out. I was distraught. The next day I looked again and there was the key wrapped in an envelope. I couldn't believe it. It wasn't there before!

BTW there is nothing harmful in this phenomenon at all, and you don't get to see headless horsemen or anything, so don't feel creeped out about it.

Yes. And I'm a down to earth Yorkshire woman as well. Missing forms found on the floor in the middle of the living room carpet. I had just hoovered so they were obviously not there half an hour before. It has happed so often I now simply ask out loud for help. And say thank you afterwards of course.

I had a similar thing the day after my youngest brother's funeral. One of my bedsocks disappeared.I searched eveywhere under the bed inside the bed under the pillows in the laundry basket to no avail. Two days later it appeared in my dressing gown pocket!!!!

I have mentioned before that I have twice bought new prescription sunglasses, packed them in my suitcase to head to Australia, and they have vanished. They have been missing for 5 years and 3 years respectively. Searches at both ends of the journey have failed to find them.

Spooky, and very annoying.

Before Christmas, my TV started playing up. I couldn’t find the handbook, despite searching through the file labelled “Manuals” in my filing cabinet. A tech savvy acquaintance retuned it for me in January.
Today, I decided to steam clean some of my floors and needed to check the manual. There, on the top of several manuals in the file, was the one for the TV! Inexplicable!

A few weeks ago I was going to my Monday art class and had put a sandwich and satsuma in my bag for my lunch, and put my bag on the car floor behind my driving seat. When I went to get my lunch the sandwich was there but the satsuma wasn’t. I checked my car but still couldn’t find it, assumed it had rolled out and would reappear eventually.
Over the week I made several car journeys, and then on the following Friday I drove to visit a friend. When I was leaving I unlocked the car door and immediately saw, on my driver’s seat the missing satsuma. I certainly hadn’t been sitting on it previously as it was perfect and not squashed!!

A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting at the computer in our office, when suddenly the lights went off and then back on again. This happened twice and I thought it was a bit creepy. My husband has gone to bed before me and had left only his bedside light on, but when I went to the bedroom to go to bed myself, the top light was on and he was fast asleep and he hadn’t switched it on and there was nobody else in the house. The next morning we were told by our neighbour that the next-door neighbour on the other side had died that night and I wondered if she had switched the lights on and off to say Goodbye. Nothing spooky has happened since.

By the way, if ever I can’tfind Something, I ask St. Jude for help and it always turns up eventually!

I'm sure you're not going mad. Once my FIL lost his car keys, we hunted high and low but they were nowhere to be seen. Out of desperation I said to him, "Well, we've looked in all the sensible places so now we must look in all the silly places" and I suggested his glasses case. He opened it up and there they were! How did that happen? I didn't see him put them there and cannot explain it. Strange.

B9exchange Wed 06-Mar-19 14:44:03

No luck so far, including the metre cupboard, Dear St Jude, please pretty please?

!st incident: When my daughter was 5, we went on holiday and she spent all of her holiday money on a small toy hedgehog that she named Albert. She loved it and it went everywhere with her, even to school.
Then he disappeared. We turned the house, car etc upside down, I stripped her bed in case he had somehow got inside the duvet cover. He was nowhere to be found and she was distraught.
About a year later, I went up to switch her electric blanket on and there was Albert, in the middle of her bed, under the covers.
2nd incident: I called into the supermarket, paid and drove home. When I looked for my purse it wasn't in my bag, pocket or car. I phoned the shop and it hadn't been found so I cancelled my cards and bought another purse.
6 months later I opened the top drawer in my bedside cabinet and it was there, totally empty.
Incident 3: Going out and couldn't find my car keys. Family looked everywhere but no luck. I picked up the spares and went back into the kitchen to get my bag and they were on the worktop.

I have had other 'wormhole' experiences and now, whenever anything mysteriously goes missing, I ask whoever has it to please return it.

Can't explain it, but it definitely happens, you are not alone.

I lost three very special rings as I had to take them off when giving a massage at work. They disappeared for months. I dragged a load of handbags out of the shed to go to a car boot and decided to go through the pockets of the orange bag. Low and behold ina side pocket were my rings. I was so shocked I burst into tears. with relief more than anything

Rosina Wed 06-Mar-19 16:09:10

I don't have any amazing stories but I can go right through my handbag, each and every compartment, looking for something that I know is there, then search thoroughly the shelves, cupboards, drawers and places where I know I haven't left the item, then go back to my bag and the first thing that will come to hand is what I was looking for. Happens so often that I almost expect it now!

dogsmother Wed 06-Mar-19 16:29:04

B9. It was always St Anthony who we called for in our house when I was a child. It always was a last resort and always seemed to work too!

lemongrove Wed 06-Mar-19 16:36:31

Since there is a rational answer to all these mysteries ( and not fairies at the bottom of the garden) the likeliest explanation is that we don’t look properly/ we forget what we did with things/somebody else moved them. Mind you, that isn’t as entertaining.grin

The very first pair of earrings I bought after having my ears pierced as a young adult in defiance of my mother's wishes, I may say, were half-hoops with a distinctive twisted pattern.

I took them with me on holiday, and when I came home they were not in my bags when I unpacked them. Of course, I couldn't remember whether they had been in a little cloth purse when I packed my bags to come home, so I am afraid I suspected the hotel chambermaid had stolen them. I blamed myself for putting temptation in her way.

A year and a half later, I decided to re-decorate my bedroom, which meant I had to pull a heavy Victorian dressing table away from the wall. Lo and behold, at the very back of the space occupied by the dressing table were my earrings.

I have still no recollection of putting them anywhere near that dressing table!

According to DH these things have fallen through a hole in the continuum of time, to reappear at another time.

ReadyMeals Wed 06-Mar-19 19:39:37

My own theory is that we are all avatars in a VR game, and it's so immersive that by the time we've been in it for a year or so (as babies) it is more real than the "real" life outside where we are really some life form we can no longer remember. These disappearance/reappearance anomalies, as well as deja vu, are caused by database resets and blocked processes.

HootyMcOwlface - what a wonderful name!!

I'm SO glad these things happen to others as well. It reassures me.

However many rational arguments are put forward, I know for sure I emptied that bag and there were NO keys.

Skweek1 I'm sorry you are going through nightmare times, it's tough, I know, going through them myself.
Sending aroha to you.

After my mother died in a nursing home in 2010, all of her clothes and other belongings were meticulously collected and boxed by me with the help of my two daughters.

Her jewelry was kept a small safe, including her wedding rings, her watch, two sets of gold earrings and an assortment of faux necklaces, bracelets and other odds and ends. All of these were accounted for except for a gold Omega watch my dad had given her on their twenty fifth wedding anniversary....it was the only item that was missing. We looked everywhere and reported it to the nursing home. To make a long story short, all our claims and efforts to recover it were futile.

Fast forward to September 25, 2018 (my mother's birthday was 9/25)..... I was cleaning our basement and getting rid of some unsold household items from my last yard sale. Among the unsold items was an old jewelry box (with a secret false bottom) that I had kept for years. When I picked up the empty jewelry box, I felt something shaking inside. The upper compartment was empty, but when I forced open the false tray on the bottom, my mother's watch was inside!!!

One logical explanation could be that my mother hid it there during one of her last visits to my house. What I can't explain is how I wouldn't have found it the day of the yard sale. That jewelry box was completely empty....(I would never have sold it otherwise). I even remember removing the bottom and inspecting it myself!
