How to explain the inexplicable

Event One:
I could not find my spare keys. They normally live in a drawer but I vaguely remembered putting them in my handbag a while before. It's not a large bag: 2 compartments a zipped pocket on both outsides.
So I searched it - I took everything out, I shook the bag, felt inside and out - nothing.
No one, ever has access to my bag but me.
This week I had spare keys cut.
The next day, when dipping in one of the outside zipped pockets of my bag for my regular keys - there were the spares; keys I hadn't seen for a month. And I dip into that pocket most days, before locking my door!

That pocket only ever holds my regular keys which have a jewelled heart keyring.

The spares are on a pretty big key-ring too, one which includes an old-fashioned policeman's wooden truncheon, mini but over 10cm long, not easy to miss. How on earth did they get there?

Event Two:
My daughter in law was looking for a vital form. She searched the only drawer where forms are kept - so did I, in despair when she was so upset. No form.
We broke for a cup of coffee and she said, 'I'll just have to send for a copy but what a hassle.'

She went back to get writing pad and envelope, gave a cry at the door and called me to come quick. There was the form in the middle of the bed, in full view.

I am, as they say, gobsmacked. What's going on here?
Down-to-earth Yorkshire women like me do not have airy-fairy experiences, but how to explain this.

Hand on heart, this is not a wind up it's actually quite scary.

Has anyone else had similar experiences or am I genuinely going mad (along with my dil)

knickas63, I am not inclined to blame a spirit having a joke, because sometimes these things turn up after such long intervals that you can't imagine someone waiting so long to have their laugh. And most of us who have these experiences probably can't think of anyone we knew who had hidden things for a joke in their lifetime.

I have posted this before, but many years ago I lost my engagement ring. I took it off the night beofre, put it on the usual spot on the shelf, which I did every night, and it wasn't there the next day. We turned the bedroom upside down looking for it, pulled the shelf out, everything. I was devestated. Eventually we gave it up as lost and we claimed on the insurance. My DH bought me an eternity ring. Fast forward about a year later, almost to the day. I got up, wnet to put my rings on, put on my eternity ring and my engagement ring. Stopped dead, looked at my fingers, took the rings off, put them back on the shelf, stared at them, put them on again, took them off again and literally screamed for my husband. We have absolutely no explanation of what had happened or where the ring came from. My grandmother was always hiding things to annoy people, and I still think it was her!

It is getting worse. This morning while hoovering round the kitchen table I found a 50 pfennig coin on the floor, 50 pfennig, note, not 50 cents/1/2 euro. Germany has not used 50 pfennig coins since the Euro became their currency in 1999.

No-one but DH and I have been in the house since it was last hoovered, DH and I have not been digging out old clothes and emptying pockets. I am not sure how many 20 year old items of clothing even DH owns.

Obviously this coin that fell through a hole in the continuum of time sometime over 20 years ago has come out through the wrong hole and 20 years too late.

ReadyMeals I like your theory. I have often thought that we are being manipulated by aliens in a scientific experiment or at worst some entertaining game. When you are sitting in one place and have not moved, how can the scissors/pencil/sewing thread/glue stick etc etc go missing even when you stand up and search all around? It has to be to amuse some alien being!!

By the way Missfoodlove our friendly 'ghost has been particularly active lately, walking up and down through the bedrooms while I am downstairs and only just spotted clouds moving across the living room and hall. I seriously believe there is a good explanation related to heating floor boards or failing eyes but who knows? Maybe I just need to get out more!

MissAdventure Fri 08-Mar-19 22:36:54

I am forced to believe that I experienced some sort of sighting of a ghost.
As sceptical as I am, there is absolutely no logical explanation.
I may have to start a thread. shock

Missfoodlove Fri 08-Mar-19 21:52:52

I lived in a house in North Yorkshire with a very active ghost. She was very mischievous and did hide and move things, there are so many stories to tell. She was always more active when we had guests. She scared the bejesus out of one friend who was a staunch sceptic.

Yes, but since DH always puts his washing in the washing basket (which is in the bathroom), why would I (or he) pick it out of the washing basket and hide it until earlier this week and then put it in my drawer. Although as I said, I noticed I was one short when pairing the dried washing, which was on a drying rack in the garage.

ReadyMeals Fri 08-Mar-19 21:21:56

Yes that makes it even more weird, because it was at the taking the washing off the line stage that you noticed it missing, before you'd even have had the chance to distractedly put it in the wrong drawer. If it had been found dirty one might have been able to speculate that you'd never put it in with the wash in the first place for some weird reason.

M0nica Fri 08-Mar-19 17:20:02

Well, it was clean, so presumably got washed, but how it got into a drawer and on to something that hadn't been touched for 6 months I do not know.

moggie57 Fri 08-Mar-19 17:07:56

That's what is called sods law. Lol.I often mislay things couple of weeks ago lost my flash stick.I knew I had it by pc.searched high and low amongst gc toys everywhere. Then I heard the music to my mums jewellery box tinkle.that's strange says me. So went to look.and there was flash stick sitting on top of box

ReadyMeals Fri 08-Mar-19 16:46:33

M0nica, when you found that sock, could you tell if it was clean or dirty? I mean, did it ever get into that wash cycle before it disappeared?

DanniRae Fri 08-Mar-19 11:06:32

When my darling brother-in-law died I often found the small window in the bathroom locked when it is never usually locked - the key wasn't even in the bathroom. To explain the connection with my b-i-law - he wasn't supposed to be smoking as he had had 2 cancer scares but we all knew that he was doing so on the quiet. So if he was visiting I knew he would go up to the bathroom for a crafty cigarette so I would make sure the window was open to let the smell of cigarettes out. Was he acknowledging this from the grave? I like to think so.

M0nica Fri 08-Mar-19 08:45:05

Not quite as dramatic, but a couple of months ago, I had the classic odd sock problem. Hung the washing on the dryer in the garage and when I took the washing down and paired the socks, one was missing. I put the odd sock aside, hoping its mate would appear.

Today I went to my drawer in my chest of drawers that contains items of clothing that are essential but not worn often. At one end of the drawer, neatly placed on the turquoise swimming costume I bought in the summer sales but haven't worn yet, was a black sock with a bright green clock and heel, in other words, unmissable when the drawer was open. Now since the sock went missing, I have been to that drawer, may be once every couple of weeks. It was so immediately obvious when I opened the drawer yesterday, I could not possibly have missed it if it had been there all along. Nothing immediately around it had been used and washed at a time that matched the time the sock went missing.

Mind you I could manage without the sock, what I really want to have back is my mother's sapphire ring and two family wedding rings that disappeared from a small shelf in the kitchen a couple of years ago. No reason to suspect dishonesty. I just think they must have been swept up with something and thrown away, although I cannot see how this could have happened. I have asked every saint and deity I know of for assistance, but without success.

I’m so glad I read this post yesterday! This morning DH couldn’t find his “keyless” car key and flew into a rage/panic turning the place upside down but with no success. We both looked everywhere but no joy. He of course, was in a hurry to get to work and the whole situation was getting pretty stressful. Eventually I locked myself in the bathroom and, remembering the advice of gnetters, I calmly asked that whoever had the key to please return it. I then returned to the sitting room and, guess what, there was the wretched thing sitting on a foot stool that we had both checked over several times and where it definitely had not been 10 minutes before.

Annaram1 yes! That's it. Clever you smile

In the 1990s my adopted children thought nothing of taking away my possessions and could not see it as stealing. In their eyes if they wanted it they could take it. They not only took my box of costume jewellery but also my precious jewellery. To cut a long story short my wedding ring from my first marriage was never found . Fast forward to last month and we had to force open a small safe that we didnt even own back in those days in England. In it was my wedding ring. To think that I had thought it lost for nearly 20 years so how did it find it's way into the safe?

justwokeup Wed 06-Mar-19 22:27:35

Not at all spooky but, when OH has 'looked' for something he advises me to look in the same place and lo and behold, there it is. grin But I'm definitely going to ask St Anthony/St Jude to help me find my favourite necklace if they don't mind ... and with my fingers over my eyebrows. I need all the help I can get as I lost it years ago. I'm really careless!

MissAdventure Wed 06-Mar-19 22:12:05

When I was pregnant, my engagement ring became too tight, so I hung it on a long chain and wore it round my neck.

One morning I couldn't find it where I had left it (and my mum's house was absolutely spotlessly clean and tidy!) and it ended up with me and mother falling out.

We both made a point of noisily looking for it but it was nowhere to be seen.

Just as I was about to leave, my mum called me, and as soon as I went into the bedroom I saw it.

The chain was swinging back and forth like a pendulum, hanging out of the drawer which was set between the wardrobes.

After my mother died in a nursing home in 2010, all of her clothes and other belongings were meticulously collected and boxed by me with the help of my two daughters.

Her jewelry was kept a small safe, including her wedding rings, her watch, two sets of gold earrings and an assortment of faux necklaces, bracelets and other odds and ends. All of these were accounted for except for a gold Omega watch my dad had given her on their twenty fifth wedding anniversary....it was the only item that was missing. We looked everywhere and reported it to the nursing home. To make a long story short, all our claims and efforts to recover it were futile.

Fast forward to September 25, 2018 (my mother's birthday was 9/25)..... I was cleaning our basement and getting rid of some unsold household items from my last yard sale. Among the unsold items was an old jewelry box (with a secret false bottom) that I had kept for years. When I picked up the empty jewelry box, I felt something shaking inside. The upper compartment was empty, but when I forced open the false tray on the bottom, my mother's watch was inside!!!

One logical explanation could be that my mother hid it there during one of her last visits to my house. What I can't explain is how I wouldn't have found it the day of the yard sale. That jewelry box was completely empty....(I would never have sold it otherwise). I even remember removing the bottom and inspecting it myself!

It is called a jottle or jot by the Society for Psychical Research .

BradfordLass72 Wed 06-Mar-19 19:51:32

HootyMcOwlface - what a wonderful name!!

I'm SO glad these things happen to others as well. It reassures me.

However many rational arguments are put forward, I know for sure I emptied that bag and there were NO keys.

Skweek1 I'm sorry you are going through nightmare times, it's tough, I know, going through them myself.
Sending aroha to you.

My own theory is that we are all avatars in a VR game, and it's so immersive that by the time we've been in it for a year or so (as babies) it is more real than the "real" life outside where we are really some life form we can no longer remember. These disappearance/reappearance anomalies, as well as deja vu, are caused by database resets and blocked processes.

M0nica Wed 06-Mar-19 18:15:44

According to DH these things have fallen through a hole in the continuum of time, to reappear at another time.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 06-Mar-19 17:38:06

The very first pair of earrings I bought after having my ears pierced as a young adult in defiance of my mother's wishes, I may say, were half-hoops with a distinctive twisted pattern.

I took them with me on holiday, and when I came home they were not in my bags when I unpacked them. Of course, I couldn't remember whether they had been in a little cloth purse when I packed my bags to come home, so I am afraid I suspected the hotel chambermaid had stolen them. I blamed myself for putting temptation in her way.

A year and a half later, I decided to re-decorate my bedroom, which meant I had to pull a heavy Victorian dressing table away from the wall. Lo and behold, at the very back of the space occupied by the dressing table were my earrings.

I have still no recollection of putting them anywhere near that dressing table!

Since there is a rational answer to all these mysteries ( and not fairies at the bottom of the garden) the likeliest explanation is that we don’t look properly/ we forget what we did with things/somebody else moved them. Mind you, that isn’t as entertaining.grin
