Really worried about 12 year old grandson

Hi I’m really worried about my 12 year old grand son he got caught shoplifting?

Yesterday evening my grandson went to the local supermarket for me to get a few things for the dinner I forgot but it turned out to be a disaster.

He walked down on his own it’s only a 5 minute walk. He was wearing his cheap grey Tracksuit and his black converse style trainers which I admit arnt in the best condition so he attracted security’s attention when he walked into the store especially with him being on his own.

He picked up a dvd and put it under his hoodie not realising security were watching his every move. On the way out he paid for the items he got for me as he only had enough money for them then he started to walk to the exit that’s where security and the store manager stopped grandson and took him to one of the offices.

The store rang me as his mum was at work When I got there he was so upset and distraught. I’ve never seen him so upset ?
Thankfully the manager and security guard were really helpful and understanding and they talked to grandson about why he tried to do it and what the consequences should be thankfully they won’t be taking any more action against him but I think him being so coprarive and not back chatting helped and I think they Liked that they even said he was the most respectful and behaved teen shoplifter they have caught in a long time I think if grandson was rude he would of probably been arrested.

I’m just really worried about him because it was so out of character he’s a good kid never gets into trouble at home or at school.

Both my daughter and grandson live with me after my daughter split up with her long term boyfriend last October since then they have been living with me.

would he have to spend a few hours in a cell does anyone know ??
I'm all for a short, sharp shock.
Does wonders.

Couldn't agree more Maw (if you'll pardon the homophone grin)

Out of interest , as he has been caught twice shoplifting, why are you hugging him and telling him not to worry?
Is he just devastated at being caught or ashamed of what he has done?
I wouldn’t be telling him everything will be all right, I would be grounding him, making him realise the consequences of his actions and working out a plan to show him the way back to the straight and narrow.
It’s the shopkeepers who get my sympathy, not tennagers who think theft is funny.

I’m actually so offended some people think I’m lying ?

I will give an update tomorrow for the people that want to know.

Ok I won’t prepare to get a lawyer just yet what would happen if he did get arrested thought would he have to spend a few hours in a cell does anyone know ??

I think he needs a thoroughly good talking to,not therapy or counselling, but must be made to realise that shoplifting and petty larceny lead one way only. He is not the first teenage shoplifter and won’t be the last but a short sharp shock won’t do him any harm? Tough love.
And don’t beat yourselves up about his childhood or background. He has a loving home and has been brought up to know right from wrong.

Oh good god no you dont need a lawyer!

Nobody has been in trouble with the police before the first time...

You GS is not "good" or "bad". He did a bad teenagerey thing which many teenagers do. Give him consequences but FGS stop thinking in such black and white terms!

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Mar-19 18:26:34

the most respectful and behaved teen shoplifter they have caught in a long time
That is so lovely, you must be proud!
I doubt they will take further action.

I’ve text his mum and she’s worried sick like I am we’re taking him tomorrow I told them we would be there for 9am the other boy and his mum are coming with us aswell

Elegran Fri 01-Mar-19 18:18:04

Jalima So did I.

Gonegirl Fri 01-Mar-19 18:06:38

Phone his mother at work and tell her. Let her do some of the worrying too.

Gonegirl Fri 01-Mar-19 18:03:03

If they were going to arrest him I think they would have done so by now. He is most likely in for a good telling off.

I wouldn't hug him and tell him not to worry. Let him worry himself sick.

Of clurse you won't need a "lawyer". hmm

Itsjo70 Fri 01-Mar-19 17:57:56

Would there potentially be the need for a lawyer if my grandson was arrested when we go tomorrow ??

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Mar-19 17:44:17

Perhaps a different poster then and a different child, it's just that when I read your OP I had a feeling of déjà vu

Itsjo70 Fri 01-Mar-19 17:41:01

He’s never been in trouble with the police before it will be the first time he’s ever been to the station tomorrow security didn’t catch grandson and his friend on Sunday they just caught grandson on his own Wednesday night

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Mar-19 17:28:40

I didn't think this was the first time he'd done it - didn't you post about this before itsjo?
What happened last time when the police came to the door?

Grammaretto Fri 01-Mar-19 17:28:31

The mother of one if the vandals also said her son was such a good boy.......
She later admitted that his behaviour had changed recently since his dad had remarried. I could have been kinder to her but as I said I have no sympathy at all with vandals.

notanan2 Fri 01-Mar-19 17:18:08

You keep saying he's "good" and this is "out of character"

There arent two types of kids, good and Denis the Menace bad

Doing a bad thing isnt "out of character" for good kids.

Everyone is shades of grey

Itsjo70 Fri 01-Mar-19 17:06:47

He was With his best friend when they did it on Sunday he’s a good lad aswell never really gets into trouble at home or at school like grandson.

It’s so out of character from both of them I think grandson will be in much more trouble as he did it again on his own aswell ?

Grammaretto Fri 01-Mar-19 17:05:10

When we found some young lads caught vandalizing our community garden, they got a quite scary talking to by the police and we never had any more bother.
There was also an offer to help us in the garden but I'm afraid I was still too angry to want their help!

Grammaretto Fri 01-Mar-19 17:00:27

A lot of kids muck about and test boundaries. I don't suppose the police will be surprised and they may be able to help you all through this.
It sounds like your DGS wants to keep in with the "cool guys" and you have to be careful how you handle him. You are doing well so far and he's lucky to have you.
I wish you and his mum well for coping with this crisis.

notanan2 Fri 01-Mar-19 16:56:17

Police wont arrest for shoplifting thefts of less than £50 value where I live

Itsjo70 Fri 01-Mar-19 16:54:55

What would actually happen if they arrest him ??, ?
